how many rpm?

Featured Replies

All down to the conditions and what is required from the car at the time.

So if I need to I will floor it and let it rev out to the red line if I need to for a slip road or climbing a steep hill etc.

Other time's it's either a tickle on the throttle and let it shift at 2000rpm or half throttle is a good compromise with the box shifting at 3000rpm.

I think all cars should get a good thrashing from time to time. Keeps everything clear. I know that on mine if I've been driving gently for a while the first time putting my foot down again it always kicks a load of crap out the exhaust.

or in the case of a diesel the torque and power drop off

And in the case of some turbo petrols too.

You get all sorts, You get VVT & VVTi and variations.

but take a 1.2 TSI 105ps, Max Torque is given as 175Nm 1,500-3,500 rpm,

 but Max Performance 105ps @ 5,000 rpm

& a

1.6 TDI CR 105ps, Max Torque is given as 250Nm 1,500-2,500 rpm,

but Max Performance 105ps @ 4,400 rpm

You might want the 'Torques', and you might well equally wants some revs.

As it is you might not often need the Maximum Power.

Good point. If you look at the specs of the 2.0 TSI it's often the same max torque across different models, but it's extended to a higher engine speed to give a higher max power. In the real world, if both cars are side by side, they'll be as quick as each other to that point where the lower powered variant drops off, assuming same weight of course. This is why an octy vrs 230 is pretty pointless upgrade over the standard 220ps version from a performance point of view, as the extra power is only noticeable in the last few hundred rpm

Not wishing to sound "thick" but surely there isn't much point in redlining a diesel....is there?

I have only ever taken my 1.9 pd up to 4k-4.5k

Depends on the individual car, both my Fabia and 320d as standard run out of puff after 4k or so but once mapped they'll both pull very well all the way round to the redline.

Yeah our 1.9pd 105 T5 tails off at just over 4k.

Sometimes run it right through just to clear it out though. Big puff of black smoke out the back.

Yes most diesels (especially the PD ones) run out of oomph near the red line but it is good to give them a good work out sometimes.

Unless I use manual mode if I floor it mine will rev out anyway so I just let it! Lol

Plus its fun... And you couldn't do a Nurburging lap without getting nesar the red line to be fair

Exactly. Once the torque drops off the cliff as it does, no. Change up but you can feel it driving, it's pretty obvious

I'm partial to 7,000 of your rpms :) it would seem rude not too....occasionally

I liked the 8200 of my old Honda.

Had the same with two Mondeo's. I had the standard 201bhp 3.0V6 and then the 223bhp 3.0V6 ST220. The ST220 had a more trick exhaust system and sports cats which allowed better breathing at the top end of the rev range but they had the same torque and there was no difference below 5500rpm and you had to extend beyond 6000rpm to notice the extra push.

So in 99.9% of driving they drove exactly the same.

And in today's turbo era there are many more examples. My wife used to have one of the new BMW 1 Series. We looked at the 1.6T petrol in 136PS and 170PS versions but the midrange torque (1350rpm-4100rpm) is only 10NM difference so driving normally they didn't feel that different so she saved £1500 and went for the lower output version.

Just depends how you drive and how many times you think you have to push to the redline. On todays congested roads covered in speed cameras it seem to be less and less.

Lee

Indeed Lee, and on real world roads we don't sit at 5k waiting for the overtaking opportunity, so it's all about torque at lower engine speeds.

Only 8200? ;):D

It was older shape accord. Red line started at 8k.cut out at 8.2 but I drove for a weekend the rover shaped civic with the 9k 1.6 engine. Great fun but utterly useless on public roads.

Ah i know the one. Thats the B16 isnt it? My mate raved about em at one point.

I realised it was crap when he complimented my HTP on low down torque. "Mine wouldnt pull from low like that"

Hmmm... :D.

The thing is, torx stuff is nice, very nice, but some engines just sound great when rev'd hard. :)

Very true!

Revs are fun!

Revs are fun!

This.  I consider myself very lucky to have had the best of both worlds when I had the V6TDI and the Sol.  The V6 was full of grunt really low down and I could easily get out of the NSL without crossing 2200rpm, which made for a very leisurely drive.  The Sol is a solar ( ;) ) opposite.  A single cam D15 and technically the slowest of the Sols, but the sound and rev range is just great when you wind it up.  It's the Sol that puts a cheesy grin on my chops  :sun:

Gaz

I think revs are fun in most vehicles!

Apart from our 1987 2.4 diesel fiat ducato... They're just painful and loud! Lol

Same in a transit comnect 1.8 diesel... but you need to use them or its like the hand brake is stuck :(

Haha. Yes... Over 2.8 tonnes with 70bhp... Rev, rev, noise,noise.. Going nowhere. Lol
