Shocking!

Nice pics!   I would suggest you go for something that lets you change the lens.   Start with a cheap body and a good fixed lens and then as you out grow that upgrade the body and expand your lens collection.   I really like the Micro 4/3 system but there are other options.

Forget the bridge slr... I went straight to a DSLR, I have the Canon 700D and use the kit lens at the moment. There are plenty of YouTube videos to help you out, maybe even a camera club in the local area? Straight away with a bridge you've limited yourself. If you're working on a budget you can pickup a Canon 500/550/600/650 for pretty cheap now. Give Park Cameras a go.

Ive found a Nikon D3200 local is that any good?

  • Administrators

That's ok, but one thing I'll say is choose a brand and stick with them. Believe me once you've chosen you'll stuck with them. Nikon camera you'll need everything Nikon, no interchanging etc etc.

Without being biased (and I am lol) I would go for Canon with ease of use. Plenty of tutorials, loads of lens on the cheap. I like how the Canon holds in the hand, I love the LCD panel and the quality I find is a little sharper on a Canon.

Thank you so much.

Not sure what to do,buy new or second hand.what are they like reliability wise? new obviously comes with warranty, secondhand probably more accessories.

Im also unfamiliar with canon's models.canon EOS 600d-100d-1200d which is the better?

Sorry to be a pain

I started out with a Bridge camera when I "upgraded" from a point and shoot, a Fujifilm HS-30EXR I think.  That gave me more control over a point and shoot but I quickly wanted to do more with my camera.  So, after 4 months, I bought my first DSLR, Nikon D3200 with kit 18-55mm lens.  Just like Dean, I'm biased, but towards Nikon, and I've recently bought a Nikon D7200 body, but definitely find the brand YOU like and stick with it.  The way I did it was to go to Currys/PC World and get your hands on the actual camera, see which one feels the best in your hands, which one you like the controls and buttons on and go with the one that feels most natural to you.  I can't remember why I didn't like the Canons but Nikon just appealed to me more.

As has also been mentioned, start with a relatively cheap body and upgrade your "glass"; when you find that the camera and upgraded lens combination isn't giving you what you want then it's time to look for a body upgrade.

From personal experience, the Nikon D3200 is a great starter camera; not too big or heavy and it gives you the control to do pretty much whatever you want with your photo's.  I'm more of a landscape/wildlife enthusiast and the D3200 served me well, with a couple of lens and accessory purchases along the way (which I still use on my new body).

Hope this helps.

Every bit of feedback is brilliant...id love a canon 600/650d but budget i may end up with a nikon with extras we will see.

I love my landscape scenes.you may have seen my crude iphone shots in the other thread.

I've been told i have a keen eye,and it should be something keep on at.

All you need is a keen eye, I've got some beautiful shots on an iPhone, I laugh when people turn their nose up specially when I've told them I've taken this picture... What are your thoughts? Only to tell them that it's been done by an iPhone, there faces are priceless.

I know budget might be a huge factor, but if you want something better specially the 600/650D then just wait that little longer and save up another £50 over a month or two. Always get the best you can with what you can, it will only come back and bite you later with thoughts 'I wish I waited a little longer and saved up for so and so...' - Trust, it will be worth it!

The general consensus seems to be (at least at the moment) Sony are making the best DSLR sensors, which Nikon also use in a lot of their cameras. Canon probably make the best high end lenses (open to debate) but Canon certainly have the largest lens catalogue to choose from. After the photographer, the lens is probably the next most important thing, so ultimately Canon may give you more options. But Canon, Nikon and Sony all make great products and you can't really go that wrong with any of them :)

I'm a Canon fan, but if I had started with a Nikon, I'd probably be saying I'm a Nikon fan instead :D

I did these on a iphone 4   saving for a 700D i reckon.

  • 1 month later...

You asked what the numbers mean, the lower they get, the more expensive the camera - so the Canons start with 1200d, go through 750/760d, 70d and then the really expensive 5d, 1d.  I think Nikon's follow roughly the same principle.  Definitely a good idea to upgrade from a bridge camera because the sensor in a bridge camera is about the size of two grains of rice (the same as in most high end mobile phones) and even a basic DSLR sensor from either Canon or Nikon is slightly smaller than a postage stamp, so you'll see a big improvement in picture sharpness.  That's also the reason why you get astronomic zoom ranges on bridge cameras and not on DSLRs

One of the basic Canon kits sells with an 18 - 55 zoom lens that feels a bit plastic but actually gets very good results in those tekkie tests, although the lens that's usually on my camera is an 18 - 135 and that's a pretty good range for everyday use.

I'd suggest going into PC world and just having a look at the size and range, and you'll get a feel for the weight.   There are also various camera comparison websites like this one

http://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-760D-vs-Canon-EOS-750D

where you can see at a glance what the pros and cons are of different models.  Best of luck!

I did just that.Heart was set on a canon, but picking a nikon up i prefer them and there layout.

When fund's allow i'll give the Nectar card a treat.

Calumet did a deal at Christmas for the Canon 5d of, £2K for the camera and with a free grip, oh and you could have it at 0% over 2 years too. I just couldn't find the money at the time :(

I wouldn't dream of spending that much.I struggle for time at the moment.

I'm canon as that's what I started with. When you start buying lens etc its a lot of expense and a brave move to jump brands. I'm on my 3rd canon but often wonder if Nikon would have been better as the newer models seem better with noise handling and possibly focus when compared with their canon equivalent.

Entry level models from any brand will give you an excellent starting point. You need to work out what you will be shooting and then choose a suitable camera. I.e. if it's action you're after (sports) you will need a fast shutter (fps, frames per second) and a good focus system. If it's landscapes you may want better low light handling (better noise handling), live view and a vari-angle LCD to help with low level shots.

Once you have decided and found a couple of models which you think are suitable check out camerapricebuster.co.uk for best prices and snapsort for excellent spec comparisons and ratings.

I'm a sucker for a nice background.Where i live is so beautiful most of the time.

And i'm a keen detailer so close up's of water bead's is a must.

Also the occasional family picture's and day's out.

I wouldn't jump just yet. A lot of the great Nikon sensors are really Sony's anyway (as you are probably already aware :) ) The next gen 5D is expected to have greatly improved Dynamic Range to bring it back on par with the Sony and Nikon sensors, plus with Canon you probably have the best choice of quality glass... and glass never goes out of fashion :)

If Sony make the sensor's wouldn't they make the best camera's?

I did pick up a Sony at Curry's never paid to much attention as there was only the one model on display.

But i did like the feel of it.also remember the price wasn't too bad either.
