New octavia Gearbox 1st to 2nd notchy

Featured Replies

I have just bought a new Octavia SE business 2.0 diesel and i am experiencing notchy first to second gear change when cold. I contacted my local Skoda dealer and mentioned this and i got the response this is not a problem with new Skoda's and there are no technical bulletins on this, even though i have seen it mentioned on many other VAG forums including this one.

Is any one else experiencing this with a 65 plate Octavia? When the g/box oil is warmed up its fine.

any advice would be kindly revived

kind regards

Chris

As much as its annoying its a characteristic of the gearbox.

I would tend to agree that mine is a little like this too.

Doesn't bother me too much & probably will improve a little over time as the gearbox has a few km's on it.

thanks for the reply's,

its my first skoda and its really the only thing i can fault on a really fantastic car. As i tend to keep cars if it were a problem i would like to get it fixed sooner rather than later. however as its a characteristic it puts my mind at rest.

cheers

There's a thread somewhere on here about this. Seems that most people's are notchy particularly when cold. I'm going to mention it when it's due for service next time, maybe something can be adjusted, I don't know...?

It get's less notchy over time. By 4000 miles the gearbox in my 64 plate VRS felt pretty slick.

some people on some of the Audi and VW forums suggest going from a 75W90 to 75W80 does the trick. Some Audi dealers seem to be familiar with the problem and offer this as a fix and by all accounts it seems to do the trick. However no one says what the long term effects of this are so it may be a compromise for long distance are high loading conditions.

You do have to let new mechanical parts wear and mesh together.

It may very well get better when the oil becomes more viscus with age as a side effect although strictly speaking the oil would have deteriorated, although it should not be like this from new. This seems to be a common issue across VAG cars. The only thing is premature wear of the 2nd syncro with it being notchy. The gear sort of bangs in.

I have the clutch fully depressed and a pause, but it still feels poor. it takes longer than the engine to get to temp before it goes away, as soon as the gbox oil warms up which is dependent on losses, its fine. The only down side is if driving around town or in traffic it takes ages for it to heat up.

time will tell i suppose if its not improved by 10k service i am going to ask skoda again.

Thanks for all the advice
