Paint problems

Featured Replies

Hi all....

I wanted to get some opinions on the paint problem that has just occured on the rear bumper, wheel arch. Car is a 2015 Vrs with 5000 miles of mainly urban driving. I noticed the grey patches during washing then noticed the white paint flakes on the wash mit.

My wife took the car back to the dealers who took a few mins to diagnose that stone chips was the cause and that this was normal.....

I dont think this is the case as the paint is still flaking off....

What do others think?

Is that the front or back of the wheelarch (it looks like the front)....surely stones will only fly backwards away from the wheel.

Someone at a Dealership can not just diagnose Stone Chips caused paint to come off.

They might need to have checks done to see any Damage at the Factory or in Transit and is the paint Flaking not the application done on the cars manufacturing on the Production line.

So back you go, or call Skoda UK Customer Services,  raise a case, get a Handler, and Skoda UK can arrange a Qualified Car Sprayer / Refinisher to examine the Paint.

Do a report, and arrange correction if applicable.

But then the Warranty Manager / Service Desk at a Official Dealership knows that.

Stone chips should not cause whole areas of paint to peel off - clearly the top layer has not bonded properly.

Judging from the debris on the wheel arch liner, the dealer may have a point. I wouldn't say stone chips, just general debris damage. That said, I would think the paint should be strong enough to survive without flaking off. Skoda do seem to have a bit of a history with paint problems on plastic parts, Peeling paint on spoilers etc.

Has a pressure washer been too close to that area and flaked the paint?

It is dirty...yes...but so is the rest of the car....and the paint is fine there. I agree the paint should withstand general winter road debris.

No....not been washed much this winter

I have mud flaps on my vRS so that area is protected somewhat. But have had loads of cars with colour coded bumpers without mud flaps and never seen or experieced this. Looks like the paint hasn't bonded at all or maybe the car had a new rear bumper fitted and not painted properly? - prepped etc. before hand?

No....not been washed much this winter

I have seen this before when a Renault dealer used a pressure washer to close, it was a hot water type. Normally ok but it just takes one chip and more follow. Also I have thought for a long time that the flex in bumpers could cause issues. I have noticed this in the rear of side bumper on the octavia.

Do you wash it yourself or do you let the car park monkeys lose on it?

If you put a pressure washer too close on an edge like that it will lift the paint.

A quick fix would be to fit some mudflaps.

Looks to me like the car/paint might have been damaged in transit and then a bodged up paint repair by a chips a way type firm.

Get a paint gauge on and around the affected area to see if the paint is thicker than the rest of the car.

Yep that may have happened.

Maybe the dealer should give the benefit of the doubt this time and fix it.

Forget the Dealership, they got their chance.

Now you want a Qualified Opinion, was the car damaged and poorly repaired.

So it is a Warranty Job,

Car repaired to factory standard, just the correct factory standard, not some of Skoda CZ's standards.

Not a Kerb Side Auto Repair by the Dealerships chosen Mobile Sprayer.

Once a Customer Services Manager or Handler gets in touch you can send the pictures that the Dealership Employee

should have taken and forwarded to Skoda.

Then Skoda UK can arrange an Inspection of the Vehicle, all the paint not just this area,

get the paint thickness and see if there was a preparation and application issue,

or Damage in Transit and a poor repair.

Paint Warranty, no Corrosion Issues, but this early in a  vehicles life you want a expert opinion,

someone with the gear and an idea.

The robot had a blip at that point of its program. Warranty work for sure.

Doesn't look like normal wear and tear to me. My 63 plate Octavia isn't showing any signs like yours.

The dealer has given their opinion, I would now be calling Skoda UK to get them to inspec the car.

Had my paint repaired under warrantee, be patience it's not a quick process & Skoda UK will send a paint expert who'll measure & test.

Probably take 3 to 4 months at the quickest but it's definately warrantee & I'll probably rip the **** outta the dealership whom took the **** outta my wife like that.

Regards

Thanks folks....it'll be a call & email to Skoda UK in the morning....

It can be a quick process, the vehicle can be Inspected by the end of this week, the arrangements made to suit you and the vehicle properly painted by the end of the following week.

It is a minor job, but do not accept the bumper being stripped and painted, Skoda UK can get a new one in to be prepared and sprayed.

Courtesy car obviously for you,

but a like for like car, not some rubbish downgrade.

Erm bs if you ask me. Stones my ass! Raise the issue to Skoda if dealer wont do it's job!

  • 2 months later...

Slightly off topic but thought I'd revive this one again. I know the "issue" of paint has come up a lot of times. BUT! Seriously is it just me or is the paint on the mk3 bl**dy dire?

I say this after finding yet another damaged patch of paint following a bird dropping that was only done this morning. Pre bird poo (car is protected with a good sealant and wax) there was no "chips" in the paint work (I'm fairly sure of this)......removed it using poorboys birdsh*t remover and what do you know but the poo has chipped the paint.

Surely it cant be that weak?

It's not just that compared to my citigo go with covered over 21k the front of the Octavia seems to collect stone chips easier (only cover about 7.8k).

Not just stone chips but anything marks the paint really easy.

So I guess my questions are, am I just unlucky? Is the paint generally that bad? or is it my car has just got a bad paint job?
