Fuel filter change PD

Featured Replies

I've changed loads of truck diesel fuel filters but our family cars have always been petrol until a couple of years ago when we bought a lovely pumpe duse 1.9 Octavia. Checked Haynes instructions which included advising filling the freshly installed filter with clean diesel so I did!

Hoped it would avoid a lot of cranking over on the restart and it fired immediately - thanks Haynes.

Read elsewhere that the fuel filter is sefl-priming. I've done three fuel filter changes now - never bothered with getting and poring diesel into the filter housing and its always started first time and ran without missing a beat.

I've done a couple and have never bothered getting a can of diesel and filling it. The housing was left 1/2 full of diesel after removing the old one anyway.

I just primed the ignition a couple of times before attempting to start.

The PD engines are self priming the later CR engines are not.

Saying that I've changed the fuel filters on both our PD140 and CR140 and as above was very careful when removing the old filter. This then ensured the filter housing was still half full of diesel. When dropping in the new filter the displacement meant the fuel filter housing was almost full.

A few cycles of the ignition on the PD to top it up and a few breaths held on the CR and no issues with either.

Thanks for the replies, folks. But, with respect, shouldn't we remove all the diesel from the filter housing/can so that all the muck at the bottom can be removed with clean cloths to really do the job properly - or am I just being too fastidious? It took a few minutes longer but was far more satisfying.

I love working on the family Skodas and take a pride in their reliability.

Same son had a Fabia1, 1.2 petrol (2006) which covered 149,000 miles without a breakdown, just routine servicing, brakes and (yes!) console bushes.

On both mine when the old filter was removed the diesel remaining inside the fuel filter housing was spotless.

The inside of the filter housing is silver and it was a nice bright day when I did it, no sediment in the bottom at all...
