Removing centre lines and line markings? What a ludicrous idea. Yet another example of the false thinking that speed reduction is the only way to reduce road traffic collisions.

I can see the sense in some residential areas, where no markings means no right of way, so everyone has to give and take.

On all other roads lane markings are essential. Only someone with shares in a car accident repair centre would think removing road markings is a good idea.

Totally absurd, no doubt at some point there will be a U-Turn on this I just hope it doesn't take a death to do it.

Been done in Holland for a while and it has reduced the number of accidents.

In built up residential areas I can see the point but given the idiot who failed to grasp the give way to oncoming traffic signs last night, I would rather not see this scheme spread.

The problem is that although uncertainty may reduce traffic speed, familiarity breeds contempt, or in this case perhaps carelessness.  I grew up in the Highlands and there's loads of roads with no cat's eyes/lane markings and single track roads and whilst tourists may drive slowly (sometimes) I can guarantee you the locals do not.

 

People doing high speed, plus people uncertainly doing low speeds, plus probably people doing something stupid like having no idea how to keep on their own side of the road (which appears to be common where the council haven't been ar*ed to repaint the roads) is a recipe for disaster.

 

Still it'll give the police etc an excuse to fit yet more gatsos.

there are an awful lot of folk about who have trouble staying on the right side WITH a white line,   how many people will be killed and injured before these over educated idiots (backed up by the bean counters) decide enough is enough :doh:

I hate the idea. Often where roads lose their centre lane markings and things become a bit 'vague', professional and local drives can often resort to bullying. I was in London recently and drove to Alley Pally from South Mimms, daily. At one point there is a road that is two lanes wide but has no centre marks and the amount of bullying driving that went on at the cinch point that came up, was awful. One poor chap got it wrong and went completely through a central island and took out a lamp post!

The barriers / fencing that they put up along the slip roads at Island entrances frustrates the hell out of me.

 

Travelling along sensibly towards an island, look right to see if anything is coming but you cannot see because some fuggin ar5eole's thought it would be a good idea to put fences there, hoping it will slow people down. :@ .

 

It has to be safer when drivers can actually see around the island, instead of blocking their view. If they didn't put so much pressure on the working man, penalising for being minutes late, for instance, It would perhaps not be so bad, but still a silly effin idea IMO.

It's called an engineering solution to the problem. Not a common sense one.

Theres a few ideas i think theyve got from Holland.

Near me theres a 'shared space'. Basically the road looks like a pavement.

They do that in Holland (similar anyway) where theres occassional traffic.

Only they put it on a main road out of Stockport which see's massive volumes of traffic. Nobodys got a clue what theyre doing :D.

That'll be the "Lane assist" option off the list for many people's new car.

If I look in my crystal ball, i can see a spate of shunts coming on.....................

In North Norfolk people dordle around at around 50% of the speed limit anyway, I don't need them slowing me up any more thank-you!! Think I may have to invest in a few tins of white paint for "emergencies"

But it does open it up to abuse though and people overtaking where they shouldn't etc because there's technically no lane to cross over.

I must agree there. It can be bad enough as it is. The constant lanes just ending and turning off right did my head in then nobody wants to let you in and gets really aggressive... best one was mr white van man who was getting full on rage at me sat there with my indicator on and refused to let me in. We ended up at a red light together... Mr van man was no match for DSG off the line! lol

Holland has a much lower population, a much lower number of vehicles, dedicated cycle paths and the roads are in better condition.   The roads without markings are only in rural residential areas whereas I am inmformed we are trialling them in city suburbs?

Yes, they will make some of the more mature and sensible drivers slow down, but it will cause antagonism and road rage among the stressed out commuters struggling to get to work on time or to get home after a hard slog.   I think, in Britain, we will see a sharp rise in accidents and, consequently, a sharp rise in insurance premiums. 

The Dutch also seem much more patient, polite and tolerant - must be down to the coffee shops ;)

 

Now the Belgians are only second to the Italians in terms of lunatic driving!

 

On reflection, I believe that Eastern European drivers are interesting . . . and the Greeks . . . and . . . well, basically ALL foreign Johnnies.

 

Except the Dutch of course ;)

Hmm...

We have manys a road with no markings, therefore the soft roader and luxo barge drivers assume the centre of the carriage way is the middle of their lane... nice distance from the nasty hedges and grass verges...

What was that thing about putting a giant spike on everyone's steering wheel again? If you crash your face will be impaled therefore you will drive slowly.
