Looking for a DA!

Wasn't there someone else who posted about their lightly used Meguiars polisher failed?

great review/comments Mouldy, thanks.  With my birthday coming up...and being able to save 10% at Argos too....i sense a DA coming my way.   So what else do I need to supplement the Argos kit?  I've got some pourboys polish...err SR1?  I'll also be using it for sealant (AG EGP) and wax (nattys paste wax).  So I guess I need some decent pads, a soft, medium and a hard?  plus 1 or 2 extra fine pads for sealant and wax?  And from comments above should i buy a 5" backing plate and pads to fit?  will any backing plate fit the polisher or are they certain fittings/threads?  Suggestions wold be wonderful please lads!

I used the same 5" backing plate as I did on my Megs machine.  From memory I think it was one of these;

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polishing-accessories/dual-action-backing-plates/shinemate-5-123mm-dual-action-flexi-plate/prod_60.html

The Argos polisher comes with a 6" backing plate and a foam pad with no description of whether it cuts or finishes.  I have found 6" pads to be too large to use on most cars and now use 5.5" and 4" pads on 5" and 3.5" backing plates.

Pads are a personal preference.  I started out with Sonus pads and have now switched to Chemical Guys Hexlogic,  As far as compounds and wax are concerned, I use Megs Ultimate range, compound, polish and wax, but wax is a personal thing and I am sure that everyone on here has their own opinions.  I find the Megs range easy to use, not dramatically expensive and leave a finish that I am pleased with.  Please see my other thread for an example of what can be achieved with them;

There will be lots of opinions from various other people on here.  At the end of the day, it will be you personal preference that dictates what you use.

so realistically to use this, its going to cost £80. Is it still the best option for £80?

Backing pad ordered, and some dodofin cut pads.   Waiting for my Argos vouchers to arrive now....

For circa £80, I cannot think of another machine that will give the same apparent value, however having used the Argos DA once, I can't comment on the potential longevity of the polisher.  However, if you opt for the extended warranty from Argos for about £15 (if I remember correctly), it will certainly last you longer than my Megs machine that I paid about £170 for.

Furthermore, having spoken to Meguiars at Daventry, I  now know that they offer no support for the G220 V2 and that they suggested that I take it to a tool repairers to get it fixed.  I absolutely understand that it is out of warranty, but given the light use that it has had, I did expect more from them, even if it was only to suggest someone who could repair it.  One thing I am sure of is that I will not be buying another Megs machine in the future.

An update on the status of my Megs G220 V2 DA for anyone who may have a similar machine and suffers a problems with it.  I spoke to Meguiars and their best suggestion was to take it to a tool repairers and get them to look at it.  I phoned six or seven tool shops in and around Northampton and as soon as they asked the make and I told them Meguiars, all of them declined the opportunity.  I was on the verge of throwing it away, but out of desperation tried Clean Your Car and spoke to Dave.

The upshot is that they agreed to have a look, so I packed it up and sent it to them and have now repaired it at a very reasonable cost.

For those that are interested, I used the Argos DA on my wife's car at the weekend and remain very impressed with it.  I discarded the backing plate and pad that came with the machine and used my own 5" backing plate with various pads to good effect.  Time will tell how long it lasts, but as previously stated, for about £15, Argos will extend the warranty to 3 years, so for circa £70, you can get a reasonable quality machine that is ideal for the hobbyist detailer.

Definitely appreciate the update - on both options.  :thumbup:

CYC have proved very helpful to a few guys with DAS and Meg's machine issues now - great to now.

Also - as yet; not really heard anyone complaining about the £55 Argos machine - a good starter option for sure.

This will be my treat purchase to myself once I have finished swapping turbos and coolers on the car.

A few questions though regarding DIY machine polishing as it will be my first time (I usually polish by hand). How often do you have to replace the 'heads' / cloths / buffs or whatever you call the 'attachments' that you put onto the polisher? Is it a case of: One for applying polish. Two for removing/ buffing the paintwork?

Also - would it be recommended to clay bar the car before attacking it with a machine polisher? I have looked at the 'clay mitt' from Halfords, looks to be a good buy.

Go to breaker's yard and get a panel,cheapest and one with some scratches,that you can have a stab at later the more confident you get.

Deffo clay or buy a clay type pad...

Most pads have specific use.Cutting Polishing Finishing ect

Wash them after every use i always do. I also keep one pad to a specific polish/glaze/wax but that's personal preference.

Little tip i picked up with pad cleanse...buy a soft"ish" nail brush.when finished detailing and away from car,put DA on a low speed and touch brush with pad,it get's rid of excess and make's cleaning easier,also liven's the pad up somewhat.

Lot's of online tutorial's i only follow the Chemical Guy's channel on youtube....Clear and easy to follow and he show's you everything stage by stage.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgEcPol_nG9_aFJbB8ameLg

or in my case I've offered to fully detail my brothers car.  Its about 5 years old, never washed, kept outside, never ever seen any sealant/wax or other protection product, not scary to go at a car with dull paint!......I fully expect to get it back to showroom in a day.....as long as brother does what he is told and helps with the detail.  Plan is to get teach him as I go and to have him finish each stage as Icrack on with starting the next (2BM wash with mitts, iron-x, rinse, de-tar, clay mitt with super soapy water, rinse, polish with finishing pad and polish noting any bad bits, back to the bad bits with a firmer pad, re-finish bad bits, IPA wipe over, sealant on, cuppa, buff sealant, wax x 2 coats, qd for final bling.)   okay maybe i'll have to cut some of the wax coats out to get it done!

Still reading nothing but great reviews on the £55 Argos DA guys.  :thumbup:

Anyone else made a purchase?

I'm really tempted by the Argos machine.

Bought my wife a fitbit the other day from Argos and got a £10 gift card so it would only cost me £45......

  • 7 months later...

I've just picked up on this Argos polisher from the detailing forums elsewhere.... Like you guys have said nothing but good reviews for it online so might make a purchase to see how it goes. Mainly as I have found a slight grit scratch on the windscreen that it would be easier to get rid of with a polisher.

Nice one - let us know what you think of it.

For paint duties - it should be adequate; but on the glass polishing i think you will need to be patient.

The machine is good, but the lack of power means the motor might bog down under heavy pressure.

So steady as you go and you should be fine....
