What cars has been owned and tested befor choose Superb III

Recommended Posts

Interesting to see previous (and the number of!) cars some have had. I lease my cars now so I show no allegiance but go where the best deals are and then check out reviews. Before I leased I've had Ford, BMW and VW cars but recent previous ones are:-

56 plate VW Passat. 1.9 diesel slightly underpowered and the build quality was poorer inside compared to previous VW's I've had.

58 plate Citroen C5 Tourer. Much under rated car, nice engine, great build quality and spec, good looking estate don't know why they aren't more popular. When I took the lease it came with free tyres and servicing for 3 years, I would have taken another but prices went through the roof.

61 plate Kia Sportage. Great looking car and spec, panoramic sunroof, upgraded stereo, sat nav, reversing camera and xenons (which I'll miss) but let down by the 2.0 diesel which is a bit of a howler, definitely old school and overall lousy economy. Don't particularly like the look of the new model.

Ordered Superb SE Business with extras based on a great deal and reviews. Never even driven one yet, but sat in a few. Looking forward to March now......nearly there.

I remember those days as well. I paid £3.5k as well on a 1.2 Fiat Brava when I was 21!! One of the benefits of getting a bit older I suppose!

I think we are coming full circle again with some of the premiums people are being quoted lately ....

My cars since passing my test in Feb 1990 are:

1990 1969 Morris 1300 auto - fab car, like driving a go kart round corners & an auto you could bump start - it had optional front seat belts, no reversing lights, no heated rear window & I had to reverse the polarity to fit a stereo! Just as well it was auto as at 6'4" I had to fold my legs to drive it, I'd never have managed a manual!

1992 Peugeot 305 diesel estate - lasted half a day before I rejected it due to various issues.

1992 Austin Maestro 1.6 auto - Borrowed from my granddad with an awful engine & gearbox combination so it used fuel like a V8 - he'd had a Montego 1.6 manual before that that had been nippy & fuel efficient so it must have been the auto that was bad & I believe it was related to the one in my 1969 Morris.

1992 "A" reg Audi 80CD 5E 2.0L - Good seats for long drives, I liked it & when the exhaust got a small hole in it I like to kid myself it was a Quattro. Couldn't believe how good the fuel consumption was after the Maestro. It was a surprisingly cheap car to run as a student too - though it helped that there was a good VW/Audi specialist, Graham Batt in Bristol to keep the bills lower.

1996 ish  '89 "G" reg Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 SRI  Saloon - Pokey engine, pretty good mpg, good interior for the time & a car to respect rather than love though. I have to say that when I took it to the dealers for a service & got a Vectra courtesy car when they came out I couldn't wait to get back in it - early Vectras were terrible!!

2000 '99 V reg SEAT 2.3L V5 - Unfortunately it was the 150bhp rather than the 170bhp. I'd gone for the V5 as I only had a short commute hoping it would catch the 5 cylinder character of my Audi (it didn't) & then promptly met my now wife at a joint hen & stag do resulting in a long distance relationship so I wished I'd gone for the diesel. Pretty good car, huge boot but suspension got caught out easily & no room behind me. It wore its miles well though & I was sorry to see it go.

2007 '53 plate Skoda Superb 1.9 TDi 130 Elegance - Bought from a second hand car dealer that didn't know Skodas & was a steal! Great mpg, loads of space. I did over 100k in it & it only went when I managed to get water in the engine during a flood.

2014 '57 plate Mercedes E320 CDI Avantgarde Estate - Nice to drive but surprisingly little legroom behind me & shockingly poor Main Dealer, hence the short ownership.

2016 Skoda Superb 190 DSG L&K 4X4 Estate - Doesn't seem as much real world space in the boot as the Merc, slightly disappointing mpg so far, very, very wide through width restrictions (& for some reason I find it harder to place than my previous cars in this situation) & I can't seem to get the door to lock pressing the handle & have to use the fob - Other than these small niggles, it rides & goes well, comfortable inside, Car Play works well, my son has enough room behind me to swing his legs now & my wife finds it more comfortable too.

I only test drove the Superb as it was the only car that seemed to meet my requirements for the money. Also, as well as my good experience with my previous Skoda Superb, my wife has had a Fabia & a now the excellent Yeti & my mum is now on her second Octavia & all are happy.

I like how you see the progression in the cars people have owned :D. You went from 3x "learning to drive" to 2x "completely insanely fast cars" to "I need more space" to "**** the space, I want another fast car" to "Damn, I really need the space" :D

@BFG   "& I can't seem to get the door to lock pressing the handle & have to use the fob"

I had the same problem until the tech showed me to just use a signle finger to poit or swipe the sensor. I was grabbing the handle in the same way as you open the lock. May help you to get it to work?? When you check in the manual the pictures do suggest that approach but I hadnt spotted it , doh!

This thread got me thinking. I currently have an Octavia mk 2 as my workhorse. Had it over 4 years and never skipped a beat. I'm seriously considering a Superb mk 2 when my house renovation is finished in a month or two. I would not buy another new car, so it will be used. I started thinking about the cars I've owned, and gave up at 63. A few of these have been primarily driven by my wife, and a few used for my part time driving school many years ago

Yes I agree. It is a poor overly complicated design that leaves you wondering whether it will work this time or not. Locking is always the issue for me; unlocking works everytime.

I have found that pointing using one finger, not holding the handle at all and swiping across the sensor vertically seems to make it work more consistently. Poor over complicated design comes to mind. With the merc I just flipped the sensor whilst holding the handle to lock or unlock.

Let us know if you follow up with the dealer and you are told something different. However, I should warn you that I will never forget the look on the tech's face when he said "all working according to the drivers manual, sir!"  I did manage to keep my one finger in my pocket for that moment :notme:

Hillman Minx side valve, 3 speed column mounted non synchro gear lever. (When I looked it up I noticed 0-60 time of 39.7 seconds!!!)

Austin A35 Van (modified with rear seats fitted and my first re-spray job)

Ford Escort 100E (the estate version) from late fifties. No heater; vacuum powered windscreen wipers and a brick on a piece of string as brake assistance.

Jaguar Mk 7. Can’t remember engine size but it had 2 petrol tanks; 4 cigarette lighters, a decanter and two tumbler glasses in the back.

Jaguar Mk X. 3.8 engine and first car I owned with all round disc brakes. Also taught me about triple SU carbs; the hard way!!

Then followed a period of works vans/land rovers which are not worth mentioning here.

Ford Zodiac.  Mk3 2.5 litre and 0-60 in about 14 seconds. Went all the way to Cornwall from furthest East Anglia in the days before motorway loaded to the gunnewls with people and holiday stuff.

Ford Capri Mk1 2.0 litre which dropped its timing belt/chain which took a while to sort out.

Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 1.8  hatchback. Just boring work car.

Vauxhall Carlton or Omega (cant remember which it was but it was like driving a 3 piece suite)

Ford Sierra 2.0 litre saloon (two in 5 years). Good comfortable workhorses that never left me down.

Renault 19 1.8 16S (inherited as a company car; great fun but did my back in)

Renault Laguna (much more sensible swap with a colleague)

Ford Scorpio Diesel (again inherited and which blew an engine in fine style just North of Yeovil)

Ford Mondeo Ghia.Mk 2 Nice cars to drive and yet comfortable for passengers as well.

Ford Mondeo Estate Mk 2 as above

Mercedes C class C200(W202) elegance saloon. Smooth yet moved when asked..

Vauxhall Vectra ©  2.2 Elite. Went like stink but was still a bit bland.

BMW E39 525i saloon. (another back breaker! Only had it for 6 months)

Mitsubishi Pajero (import) 3.5 v6. Imperious gliding above the lesser mortals :p

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 v6. Bouncy, bouncy but a good 4x4. 20mpg did for it though.

Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4 petrol (two over 5 years) Good honest proper 4x4 and like Skoda you got a lot for your money.

Mercedes C class S204  1.8 Sport Estate. Yet another back breaker, do I never learn! Greta engine and auto box, shame about the suspension.

There are probably some more in there somewhere but the memory dims with time. Gone are the days of carrying a tool box and a bag of spanners around with you. No need to carry vital spare parts in the boot. My pal had a mark 1 zodiac and carried spare half shafts around!! We changed one out overnight on the A30 just west of Exeter in about 1964. Happy days :sun:

Some impressive lists in this thread, mine's modest by comparison:

1. 1979 Ford Fiesta Mk1 1.1L, great first car, learnt a lot of DIY maintenance skills

2. 1985 MG Montego EFi, every journey a test of the skills learned on the Fiesta

3. 1990 VW Golf Mk2 GTI 8V, would love to have another

4. 2001 Alfa Romeo 147 2.0TS Selespeed, fantastic car but no-one in their right mind kept a Selespeed beyond the warranty period!

5. 2002 Alfa Romeo 156 2.4JTD Sportwagon, another good one, great engine, mine for nearly 12 years now.

Several motorcycles too :)

Funny you should ask that, the Yamaha R1 is taking its toll on my wrists and neck (head down, arse up) and I will be 60 next year, so I am looking at a nice little Honda CRF250L, Trail Bike, just to potter around the country lanes on, maybe some green lanes as well, would love to keep the R1 and buy the Honda but garage space can't handle two bikes and the Superb.

In addition to my own cars listed above, I have had company cars for the last 9 years, hence the low milage on the Primera, the company cars have been;

1) Vauxhall Astra 1.9 TDI,65K covered,

2) Seat Leon 1.9 TDI with sports pack, bloody hard ride, 70K covered, ok car.

3) Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 1.7 TDI, good car and nice drive, 65K covered.

4) Skoda Octavia, 2.0TDI Hatch SE Business  (current) 15K covered to date, best company car i have had to be honest.

I purchased the Superb for my retirement later this year, picked it up from the dealer on the 23rd of October but had a foot operation on 19th of November and was unable to drive for 8 weeks, so she has sat in the garage and been lovingly detailed and polished, but intend to do some long runs soon.
