Crap in the oil cap

Featured Replies

Hi everybody!

I have a Fabia X reg 1.4 mpi 2001. This morning I have found this crap in the oil cap and in the temperature sensor. Does anybody now what is? Is it possible to sort it out the problem? Many Thanks guys!

Any running issues?

Looks like it will be your head gasket gone, but you might be lucky and it's just it needs a coolant change and the mayonnaise on oil cap could just be from the winter weather,do you do a lot of short journeys?

Easiest thing to do is get a garage to do a 'sniff' test on the cooling system, this will show if there are combustion gasses in the coolant system.

Thanks for the reply!

honestly i do a lot of short travels (less then 5 miles). Whats the best thing to do? Just flush the coolant temperature or even the engine oil? many thanks.

Agree with coskev.

You might be lucky, but I'd bet on the head gasket. :(

its always worth going for a long drive every now and then to get the oil really hot and burn off any condensation and moisture thats built up in the engine.

as above my old Peugeot had this when I bought it off an old granny who only used it to run to the shops and back once or twice a week :P

take it for a nice, long drive and hopefully it will all burn off and go back to normal.

if not... garage time :(

Hi guys, Today I have done the compression test. These are the results. What do you think? Is still the HG?

Head gaskets are common on the MPI, however not normally leaking coolant into the oil. They tend to burn the coolant off or over pressurise the cooling system.

Look pretty equal to me.

Is the coolant level dropping?

Yes, a bit.. I need to top it up every month at least

Looks good to me. I've done a compression test last year on my mpi which has about 120.000miles and it was around 14.8 on all 4 cylinders.

So if it's not definitively the HG. What else can be??

Short journeys for the mayo on the cap.

Check around the radiator thermoswitch for evidence of coolant leakage, to explain the top-ups (and at the ends of any/all flexible hoses if there's no evidence there).  Clean the mayo off the oil filler cap and then go for a half-hour plus 'brisk' drive on a dual carriageway. When you get home, check the oil cap again. Post a picture of what it's like.

You can get mayo on the oil cap from short journeys but coupled with what looks like emulsified oil in the coolant system there is something else wrong here. How does the expansion tank and cap look?

Short journeys for the mayo on the cap.

I'm doing daily short drives from home to work which are less than 15 minutes / 2-3 miles of driving. I've never seen anything like that on my mpi engine.

It's the crap in the coolant which concerns me, along with having to top it up regularly. If it was just mayo in the cap, I'd say condenstation. Good compression though, but unless there's any external leaks, then each cylinder will reach good compression.

That's good then.

I know they are common problem (we've replaced ours) but why is coolant in the oil not common?

What else could it be rather than the head gasket?

We are losing coolant every two weeks (although we had a 6 month spell of no problems after I used K-seal in the radiator).

It gets several 30+ mile drives each week as well as shorter (3 mile) ones.

I'm running out of other possibilities...

It can be coolant burn off into a cylinder, rather than an oil channel of the gasket being at fault. Coolant to cylinder failure is the most common type of gasket failure.

Thanks. How would you fix that then?

Every time I read the title of this thread I can't help thinking

"Why would you want to crap in your oil cap? Find a toilet like a normal person."

Replace the head gasket.

To be fair the OPs issue could be the head gasket. Just saying that issue isn't very common. But on the flip side genuine parts are less than £100 to do it and it's easily done in a couple of hours so may as well change it.

I would like to do it.

Do you know where I can get a DIY guide with photos to change the HG?
