I have the lights on the inside of the door jus under door handles but they are not that bright and not adjustable.

 

Can't seem to see the footwell lights at all.

Have a look through the Maxidot, lighting settings. You might be able to adjust them. My Passat has them and there are 3 settings.

They should come on when the doors opened. There's a setting in the headunit to have them on at other times. Have a play with that and see if it turns them on. Sounds like somethings up if they're not lighting at all though.
