Injector issues on 1.6tdi, 2010 plate

Featured Replies

Hi Peeps,

I'm an Octavia owner, a 1.6tdi diesel on 2010 plate wth about 57k miles on the clock and it's generally in excellent condition.

I've owned it for about 4 months and bought from a reputable garage, the owner being a good friend for 35 years.

Since getting it I've had 3 different injectors fail. My friend has never seen one go on a Skoda, though says it happens occasionally on other makes. He's baffled.

I'm definitely not mechanically minded just want to find out if my car has a common Octavia fault, or I've just been unlucky..... Or...... ... Somethings causing it maybe?

Thoughts please!

Cheers

I don't think injector failures are particularly common.

Has the fuel filter been changed or inspected recently?

  • Author

Not sure, that was something I gleaned from googling.......will ask over next few days.

Thanks for the thought.

I have spent time on Internet trying to find such info about Octavia injectors, but from my research it seems to be rare, in fact couldn't find it reported at all!

Frustrating is not the word....

Fuel contamination such water in the fuel can cause injectors to fail

Could it have been miss fuelled in the past? Petrol in the diesel and run for a while. Have a look for swarf in the fuel filter.

I might be wrong, but doesn't the VW emissions recall on the 1.6CR engine involve replacing the injectors as well as a software change?

Mike

Not that I am aware of, just the 'flow transformer' before the MAF

Not recall for injector change but yes on software.

Very common on 1.6tdi early models

I have been formally contacted by Skoda over the emissions problems.

For a 1.6tdi it is software and 'flow transformer' as said. Different engines are subjected to differing things to make them comply.

I will talk to my mechanic friend and give him a list of things to check out, as above. Thanks for this, though he might well have already got there by himself.

alberg ' very common on early tdi models' - do you mean injectors failing?

It's just that I came to it from an 03 plate Passat 1.9tdi and it was faultless in 10 years of use,as is my wife's 02 1.9tdi Golf after 13 years......

Initially it was suggested they were going to replace the injectors, but now they have decided a software tweak and fitting something in the airtake pipework will be sufficient.

I'm disappointed, fancied a free injector refresh!!

Yes injector failures.

Usually common on owners who hear loud clack, clack noise at very low rpm.

Some also have irregular rpm on idle, my not be noticeable on needle but you can feel it at steering wheel and the engine noise is also varies.

Try this to test

Handbreak

1° gear and do like if trying to start uphill.

Except only tap the accelerator slightly and donnot take foot of clutch completely.

Thanks alberg, will give that a try.

Am I right in thinking if the original injectors are changed, that will cure it?

I.e. The idle speed etc settles back to normal and the new injectors then are reliable?

(.... But only as long as the fuel filter etc is clean and the fuel uncontaminated as some have suggested )

How much did it cost you to have an injector replaced? I think one has just gone on my 2010 1.6 CR Diesel Octavia it's currently sat outside a garage before they can look at it Monday but the RAC fault read it and said it's no1 injector fault. Car juddered, engine and coil light came on and went in to limp mode, got towed to garage.

Ah commiserations, sods exactly like my problem - sudden loss of power, limp mode and coil flashing on dash.

I think the first one was a genuine part flown in from Germany, the next one was a reconditioned one. Both those under guarantee from car salesman.

The third one was down to me after 3 month guarantee had run out. The bill was somewhere between £4-500. I think the recon injector is about £250.

Good luck!

Yep sounds very similar to me. I've just had an "aftermarket" injector fitted part no. A2C59513554 (It shows this part number on Euro car parts) that aftermarket injector was £336 new and they quoted £449 for a genuine one from Skoda. Labour was 2 hours. Car now fixed but it is making a ticking noise under higher RPMs 2000 or over they guy said it might be due an oil change or it's a Hydraulic lifter? I've not noticed the ticking before, does your tick now or is it back to normal?

I've only had the car 3 week and done 600 miles in it - the oil was changed before I bought it as part of the deal so maybe they put the wrong oil in it.. I'm getting the oil replaced with the one recommended off here (Quantum longlife) with a new oil filter. I am also going to replace the Diesel Filter. Mine has done almost double your cars mileage at 104,000 but still a 2010 plate.

My warranty has covered the replacement of this first injector but same as you I only have a 3 month warranty and I don't fancy the £500 bill if another goes!

Will report back next week after an oil flush / change and new Diesel filter.

New fuel filter in and had oil and new filter put in today and it's still making the noise. Booked in to garage for next week will report back..

Mark - my first one, under dealer guarantee was a Skoda original and had to be flown in from Germany so was out of action for a week. The next two weren't!

I have now taken drastic action to resolve my problem.

I was getting increasingly worried about our forthcoming holiday to France in the summer, but kept it to myself. I now realise my wife too was concerned ( not normal for her ) and my daughter bothered about being taken back to uni. There was also a hint from a Skoda insider to my mechanic that it could be more than he injector, the loom.

Wherever the fault lies, essentially we all have lost confidence in the car. I was always waiting for the next one to go.

Several things came together and I investigated a new Octavia using their 0% finance scheme that ended 31st March. On Friday I picked up a new SE L Octavia, the new updated equivalent of the Elegance.

It is superb! Although it is almost identical in spec, it feels totally different.

It runs more smoothly and tickover, mentioned by alberg, was worrying me on the old one as he was right, it used to flutter noticeably at traffic lights etc.

It also feels more comfortable too, my wife was never overly impressed with the Elegance but really feels this is classy.

My first ever new car, probably only ever...... With the new guarantee should anything go wrong!

Good luck Mark, I'm afraid I found that once one injector went it seemed to be another one going about every other month.

I've had two injector failures in three months. No. 3 went in April. It cost 700€  to get it sorted at the dealership. No. 1 went on Monday (June 6) and it's going to be the same to replace. The car is a 2010 Octavia 1.6 CR TDi with 176k miles on it. The only other issue in the 6 years I've had it was the well known EGR problem. The service people were unable to enlighten me as why they're failing.

It would also seem injector failures are getting very common in Ireland. On both breakdowns the tow truck drivers told me that they get a couple every week, but I think that's across all makes of car.

I'm getting rid of it. I should have done it after the first one but I was hoping it was a once off. I have noticed hesitation in the engine on occasion but otherwise there wasn't a thing amiss.

Anyway I'm not putting another cent into the car. And, as said already, the loss of confidence is just as bad.

Mine has been kind of OK lately, after the injector replacement it was ticking at around 2000 RPM which I was certain was an injector tick.

I had read various things on line one saying that it will tick and needs a few hundred miles to bed in and learn the rest of the injectors? (Not sure if this is total rubbish). Anyway I ran the car for a bit and the tick didn't go, I then read about Millers Diesel Power Ecomax and spent ages googling and reading different car websites and reviews and a few people had said it had resolved their ticking problems I also read that it's no good for the high pressure CR engines however some people said it is OK so a real mixed bag of thoughts. I put one dose in a full tank and then topped up with Shell's V+ power diesel and ran the car, after about 50 miles the ticking had gone and still hasn't returned.

I now only use Shell V+ Nitro Diesel fuel due to the higher octane and apparently my car being re-mapped I believe this is helping as the ticking could be unburnt fuel or something I also read.

I've not used any more diesel cleaner in case it does cause damage but for now the tick has gone.

Now my car is sporadically idling at 1,000 RPM, when the engine is or isn't up to temperature, no DPF light yet and I do give it a high speed 2,5000 RPM run once a week.. I will see how it goes.

My 3 month dealer warranty is up but I've taken out the AA warranty with a £500 max single claim limit, that will cover another injector if one goes..

I can also feel your pain Octamania and Devonchap, it's such an expensive job when one goes and it's the headache on top of that with getting a car to a garage and being without while it's repaired. I'm hoping for plain sailing from here and that I don't have to sell and buy something else due to very limited choices and insurance costs!

It might sound silly, but it wasn't the costs that upset me, it was not knowing when the car would break down next. It felt like Russian Roulette every time I drove it. Living in a rural area and travelling 18 miles each way to work it became a worry. I was getting increasingly bothered as we have a trip to France planned next month and realising that another breakdown would be disastrous and ruin a well needed holiday.

The final thing was my daughter assuming we'd break down if I took her back to uni, a big bonkers but symptomatic that no one trusted it any more.

There was also an underlying hint from someone that it might be a loom issue so would be very expensive to resolve. It just added to the concern over the car.

I dumped it and as said have a new SE L model and it is absolutely superb! My wife never thought much of the 2010 model but really enjoys driving this he's one. It feels like a totally different car.

I do note that others here gave done a good milage before loosing an injector. Mine was only just at about 50 k miles and the low milage plus excellent condition was the reason for buying it.

The 1.6 engine uses Siemens Piezo injectors, they are not known for their reliability!

VAG have now changed the supplier of the fuel system for that engine.

Bosch has now replacing injectores I believe.

Bosch are for some of the 2.0 engines, Delphi are now on the 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 CR

  • 2 weeks later...

my previos golf mk6 2010 1.6tdi had problem with injectors, after changing two of them I end up replacing all 4, and still didn't run properly. for this type of engine injectors are made by siemens not bosh

  • 1 month later...

Great news ... :(

I had one go today returning from a holiday in Italy. Part should be at the workshop tomorrow, if not we're stuck here until at least Tuesday...

Does anyone know if it's the actual injector that fails, or only the electronics part (maybe even the circuit that sends the state info to the ECU)?

What makes this part so damn expensive?
