Tom Tom 1

Featured Replies

Thinking of getting one, anyone got one yet? any good?

The Tom Tom software is first class, the model you're thinking of is apparently very fast thinking too.

That's a cracking price. They reviewed sat nav units on 5th gear last night and the Tom Tom one came out on top.

Word of warning. Coverage of Ireland North & South is apparently pretty poor as Street level mapping is only provided for major cities. I'll be going for Co-Pilot instead.

I pick mine up tonight so i will let you know, i had a play with one though and it seems quite good

If you could i'd appreciate that - looks like you can add speed camera detection to it to, says it costs 60 euros a year but my mate reckons it can be done for free so just doing some digging around...... also you can add celebrity voices, John cleese is meant to be the best :D

You can add speed cameras for free to the Tom Tom - go to www.pocketgpsworld.com. They have databases for all types of cameras that are updated monthly.

You can add celebrity voices too. Real ones like John Cleese come from Tom Tom and they charge you. You can get sound alikes for many - Clint Eastwood and Ossy Osbourne (censored and uncensored) for example - for free if you do a bit of a search

i got one on Sunday from PC World. Quite good. I personally hate TomTom with a passion but it's the best of a bad bunch! Fast little unit and better than the TomTom Go's for sure. Doesn't do full postcodes and mine crashed and had to be reset after using it for about 3 hours. Apart from that it's fine!

I've got Tom Tom Go 300 and I think it's great. It came with camera software already installed. Only thing that irritates me is the difference between 'bear left' and 'turn left' (or right). When I think it should be turn left, Tom Tom says bear left and vice versa. Anyone else find that?

This months Computer Active puts Navman iCN320 @ £199 top with Tom Tom Go 500 next. Tom Tom comes consistently top in reviews it seems. The Tom Tom Go is a bit bulky though.

They reviewed 3 satnav systems on lastnights fith gear, and the tomtom 1 was one of them. Looks really good and had a fast interface, looked about an inch thick which is a big improvent on the tv sized tomtom go.

The tomtom 1 won the roundup, against the others.

Great news, thanks for the link

So whats the difference between the tom tom 1 and the 'go 300'. I was rather put off by the cost and size of the go's as i've overspent just a wee bit this year.

Also how does the '1' fit, i've still got my origin b2 wedged onto the dash with wires trailing everywhere so don't really want to add to the spaggetti. :)

Main difference (as far as I can tell) is the size of it, much thinner than the older models, plus the processor is faster in the 1, everything else looks pretty similar.

Have a look on tomtoms site for fixing adapters;

It looks like The Link are still doing it for

does it do a full postcode search like the others?

Yep, its full TomTom 5 with GB map so it has all the features

Mine doesn't do full postcode searches??

How do you do it? When you enter an address i put the postcode in the town and it recognises it up to the district (up to the space) but never goes any further? Am i doing something wrong? Full postcodes would be well handy!

Oh My God that's genius!

If i had only actually taken any time to read the documentation/study the screen i would have noticed there was a page 2 !!!!

Thanks man you've just made me feel a whole lot better about buying that :D:thumbup:

It's a TomTom One i've bought so it's based on TomTom5 i guess (it says 5.410 on the route screen so it sounds about right!)

Hmmm mine defiantely does full postcodes! When you press on "navigate to" got to page 2 of the options and you will see "postcode", punch in the full postcode there and it will bring up the road name, then you choose the house number! Is it defiantely tomtom 5 youve got? I just updated to version 5.420 but it was there before...

I managed to get the Tom Tom One from the link the other day when it was 219. Typed in an online code and got it delivered for £200. It is a great unit, I am really supprised how easy it is to use.

Evening all.

Bought a Packard Bell GPS400 tother day, as it said on the box that you could add new Points of Interest, such as speed cameras etc. All seemed well, till I tried to put the cameras on, then it all went wrong. Packard Bell offers no support, with everyone in the same boat and rumours that they wont offer after sales help. So, took it back to PC World and exchanged it (plus a few more pennies :( ) for a TomTom 1. Brilliant, in 15 minutes id done what I had spent days trying to do. Need to test it yet, but the whole unit is much better quality. Mine does full postcode and everything. Lesson for today: Spend a bit more money and dont cheapskate like yours truly.:D

Tested it, and works A1. Soooo much easier, and no hassle!

Hey guys, just purchased this great gadget myself and Im now wanting to upgrade it with some extras at very little extra cost. Seen on ebay a guy selling links to free update websites which seems appealing...

Also is it illegal to have the window mount on? I read in the paper it was...

Cheers

What types of "extras" do you want. If you are after POIs (Points of Interest) such as cameras you can get those free (and without paying any shyster to tell you where they are) on www.pocketgpsworld.com

I think I heard pocketgpsworld are going to start charging

 What about the placing of the unit? Who has it fixed to windscreen?

I dare not get it hard wired as then when not in use local ch@vs will know that there will probably be one in the car from the mounting... At least with the sucker thing you can take it off really easily... But where else could this be attached except windscreen?

Thats the problem with sat nav units the screen mount is a massive giveaway, I've got a Navman iCN550 with the traffic module and the wires are a pain and it's glaringly obvious you have the unit in the car.

I am thinking about mounting it lower down somewhere and getting an external GPS receiver for it. Other than the wires it's ruddy great.

Does anyone know roughly how many sat navs get nicked every year?
