MFSW and Maxidot

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just want to double check what I'd need to get this 4 spoke MFSW working in my FL VRS that does not have maxidot.  I assume I could use my existing airbag, but would need a loom to hook the buttons up.  Would it then need VCDS coding also?

Cheers!

Yes it will need VCDS coding to tell it there is a MFSW fitted. Be aware that as a non-maxidot car, it is probably fitted with a low or mid line steering column controller that doesn't support MFSW function. That will need coding with VCDS too.

You really need to get a VCDS scan of the car to find out exactly which version of SCC you have, and compare that to Ross Techs comparison chart on their website. as per here:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

Mike

Thanks all.  Sounds about right.  Maxidot is another retrofit I'd love but they're insanely hard to source, and very expensive too.  Is the steering column something that can be updated, or is that what you meant by VCDS coding? I have a VCDS log from when I had an error code, so I'm just looking through that for any reference to SCC etc.

EDIT. Here we go, typical, I have the low line :(  Is this a new (expensive) part jobby?

From this, you have a CQ version which is midline, and will need changing for MFSW. The module itself needs changing, then coding to your car, the coding involving resetting the steering sensor angle and other things. It's going to cost you a lot more than the price of the MFSW alone.

Mike

That's very true. I could get the high line module for £60 here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-OEM-MFSW-MF-STEERING-WHEEL-MODULE-5K0-953-549-B-/261486140793

Surely I could source the wheel, module and loom for <£200 and factor in £20 to pay someone to VCDS code it all?

Agreed Mike, the 5K0 953 549 B is definitely not right for the car in question.

Assuming rosstech are correct, the CH/CJ/CK modules all have a steering angle sensor built in where as the original CQ doesn't. Therefore I'd be leaning towards a CD/CE/CF module (avoid the CF if it's an auto). It might be possible to use the CH/CJ/CK with the steering angle sensor coded out but I'm not sure.

Might be worth a pm to eddie-nl as he will definitely know :)

Ah I see. I'd misunderstood the ross-tech site - I hadn't realised that there were so many versions.

This one instead perhaps?

Whilst on the matter then, if I would like to go for maxidot one day, would it be prudent to get the correct SCC to support that also if needed?

I've sent Eddie a PM too :)

So whilst on the subject, is this the correct cluster for facelift mkii octavia petrol?

It looks correct for a non vrs petrol facelift, however that cluster only has km/H, not mph. Not sure that Skodateile sell an MPH cluster anymore.

Yeah I just noticed that myself :/

For maxidot, you want to look for part numbers starting with 1Z0 920 943, anything from a petrol should be fine and ideally SW:04xx or newer. If you do fit one, you'll also need the immobiliser reprogramming and the milage correcting on a second hand clusters - Ed is your man for this but quite a distance from Newcastle ;)

From UK petrol models I think the full part numbers are as follows but you should check before committing to buy.

SW: 01xx

1Z0920943B non-vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943D)

1Z0920943C vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943D)

SW: 03xx

1Z0920943F non-vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943G)

1Z0920943H vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943J)

SW: 04xx

1Z0920943K non-vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943M)

1Z0920943L vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943N)

SW: 06xx

1Z0920943Q non-vRS) (Diesel version is 1Z0920943S)

1Z0920943R vRS (Diesel version is 1Z0920943T)

Just to add a little more information about SW versions.

01xx - Doesn't support premium bluetooth icons, so you end up with empty squares instead of icons when used be newer bluetooth modules, not updatable.

03xx - Is a version I know little about, not seen any reports it can be updated. May or may not support premium BT icons.

04xx - Can be updated to 06xx using the correct tools (it looses the needle configuration during the upgrade which needs restoring). I believe it should support premium BT icons.

06xx - Latest version is 0608 which supports PLA2.0, direct TPMS, refuel volume etc.

Thanks very much for this.  Trying to source one is impossible though ha

Great, informative post! Like PlaneHazza, I've been keeping my eye out for a maxidot cluster but they are like rocking horse s***!

Skodateile only have the preFL maxidot in stock.

I've just been lucky and managed to source one from a breaker out of a 2011 Octavia Greenline, it wasn't cheap but not as expensive if I had bought from Skodateile.

Do you have to sit and remove it from the car yourself or was it an online breaker?

Hi guys, I'm back.  I really want a new stereo to upgrade the bolero and am considering a purely touch based android unit.  This is not safe without MFSW IMO as you need to be able to control volume etc without taking your eyes off the road - something you can't do without physical buttons.

Can I double check, that I'd need the following:

- Highline SCC 1K0953549CD  - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-1K0953549CD-MFSW-Steering-Wheel-Control-Module-For-VW-Golf-GTI-MK6-Jetta-MK5-/151657607744?hash=item234f7f7240:g:H6sAAOSwPhdVN1wp

- airbag loom

- MSFW wheel with/without new airbag

- VCDS coding

Is there anything else I'd need?

I've got a MFSW going cheap too if you want to keep cost down.

Cheers, I'll be in touch.  Currently, I'm trying to work out what else I need, as several how tos are reporting that I may need a slip ring too.  Also, my current wheel is just the standard VRS 3 spoke wheel.  If going to 4 spoke MFSW, do I need a new airbag too?

Can anyone tell me if this is genuine VW? I emailed the seller, and his first reply was that it was aftermarket.  He then immediately replied again saying he made a mistake and that that first message was incorrect; it was in fact a genuine OEM part from VW.  It seems very cheap though...  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151657607744?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Also, is this the loom I need? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MFSW-High-Version-Cruise-Airbag-Wiring-Fit-VW-Jetta-Golf-MKV-Touran-1K0971584C-/181805778411?hash=item2a547805eb:g:Rv8AAOSwjVVVqK4A

I believe airbag for three spoke and four spoke is the same so existing airbag should be fine.

Thanks, understood. I have the part numbers that I need, would ideally just like to source a 3 spoke vrs mfsw but I can't find anywhere with stock. Skodateile is the only place that lists it that I'm aware of, but they have no stock.

3T0 971 584 this is the loom for a FL mfsw

Yeah got that cheers :)  Trying to locate a 3 spoke RS MFSW is impossible, especially when I can't even find a part number...

The best alternative so far is 3T0419091AB, here for 180Euros:
