Power Steering

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

My now 20 year old felicia has no power steering with it and i have been mulling over the idea of fitting it with a power steering system to it. It almost had one fitted about 10 years ago when its previous owner (my grandparents!) tried, but ultimately left if due to being unable to source the part.

However, after coming across a copy of the skoda owners magazine ive seen an ad for sourcing old skoda parts so im sure im able to source the part now.

So my question is: has anyone on here ever attempted to fit a power steering system? (my car is the 96' 1.6 L&K estate version). If so how hard is it to do?

What is the best way i approach doing it, or just general advise really.

Thanks

aultnatior ?? What is that?

I am dislexisc we all can't be good at every think as you I offer free advise and help.. He will probably under stand

I am dislexisc

I couldn't find "dislexisc" in any dictionary. The closest word I've found is dyslexia which means "reading disorder, characterized by having trouble with reading". I don't get it. What has reading to do with "aultnatior" ? It is I who is having trouble reading that word. Do I have dyslexia?? Please tell me I don't, because otherwise my driving license would be void for not being able to read some road signs...

In Utopia, nobody ever does anything wrong so there's no cause to raise any slight deviations from perfection.

In the real world and especially on Briskoda, you'll find that we are 'tolerant' to most things and have a community attitude that is all encompassing.

Our overriding aim is to assist others so please remember this before focusing on other matters which are not relevant.

The OP will benefit from everybody's valued contributions.

I don't see why you are implying that I am not tolerant. I simply didn't know what "aultnatior" is, and I asked uma1998 to be sure. English language is supposed to be international, right? Like in understandable by any non English talking person. Using non-existent English words affects my capacity of understanding the topics. Furthermore, when uma1998 revealed that he is "dislexisc", again, I had a hard time understanding what he ment. Mind you, I was expecting to find from him what "aultnatior" is. Nevertheless, I searched for "dislexisc" and again, no hits. The closest meaningful word was dyslexic, clearly defined as not being able to read. If uma1998 is dyslexic, I don't see what is that having to do with his writing... Doesn't he know what his illness is called? According to Wikipedia, dyslexia shouldn't affect the intelligence of individuals.

I could ask too how is this forum being tolerant of me as a non-English speaking person? I have a similar inability to write in another language. Yet I do my part. I try my best writing well and the first thing that helps me is the automatic spelling checker in my browser, turned on by default. A red wavy line appears under every uncertain word. In other words, I make efforts to overcome my 'handicap'. If uma1998 is dyslexic (which in my country is a no-pass for a driving license exam), that is bad. However, it is not our fault. Furthermore, that shouldn't make him being ashamed of it. It is not like he is having an STD. There is medication, there are writing aids which he should learn to use to overcome his handicap. It is not like he is condemned for eternity to a living hell like having AIDS. However,he has to do efforts to be part of a community, like I do. I recommend to him an excellent software called WhiteSmoke. I 've given my advice in 3rd person because I saw he lacks the ability to dialogue like adults prefering the commodity of reporting to moderators the slightest allegedly lack of tolerance.

No time for a full explanation at the moment but I will respond later. Until then, please stay on topic.

Alternator is what he meant but for some dyslexia isnt just about reading it is also about writing and pronunciation of some words. Give me a pen and nobody can understand what i write.

But there is no need to have a go at somebody and sometimes your (ricardo) posts come across as very harsh, due mainly to the language barrier i guess.

Even hard to understand help is STILL help.

I dont get involved much in here lately as my brain is still on half power from the chemo and i find my attention span is tiny but everyone should help each other and at least try to get along.

That is called dysgraphia. There are correct words for every situation.

Same here. But we are talking about typing. With automatic spell checker. I use it a lot yet my grammar and style are unpolished. At least I try. Call me a foreign dysgraphic in recovery. No big deal.

What "have a go"? Where? I contradicted someone only when false or wrong information were published repeatedly. I consider that harmful and disrespectful for those asking for help. As I said many times, where I live if somebody tells you that you have poor knowledge and explains you why is that, a civilized person says 'thank you'. Why? Because he teaches you new, correct things for free. Because he prevents you spreading stupidities and having people laugh at you. I will use this opportunity to specify that I have my half-brain moments too. I thank people that will correct me in advance. I am sure you have a lot to teach me. daverapid, wino, TeflonTom, and many others too.

I will respond later. Until then, please stay on topic.

Thanks. But trust me, OP has more than enough information in TeflonTom's topic I pointed to in my first reply. If he decides to do the retrofitting (preferrably using new parts) he will have his hands full for a while.

Try not to get banned Ricardo. If you ever have any trouble reading something that appears on the forum, please let me know by PM and I'll attempt to help/decode. I think as native English speakers it's easier for us to understand spellings that might be more 'phonetic' than 'dictionary'. Genuine offer. :)

Not worth having a fight about.

Let me start off by saying that I believe Ricardo's comprehension of English is a whole lot better than mine is of Spanish! I also believe there are things that a spell or grammar checker cannot hope to get right when the true context of a post isn't understood. This, and probably a difference in culture is where mistakes can creep in and for people to be offended - sometimes in all innocence.

Now, as I can see by the undoubted knowledge he has, Ricardo is a passionate person in that he wants to get across his point of view and maybe the way he does this on Briskoda isn't what people are used to. Hopefully, if you read this thread carefully, you can see that Ricardo's efforts to 'analyse' things too deeply are symptomatic of what I've mentioned above.

uma1998 (or felicia16v) shouldn't have had to admit to having their 'illnesses', but are to be applauded in that they have. Ricardo's subsequent investigation into what it was just goes to show how difficult it is to grasp that writing could also be a problem too. I'd also like to point out that the 'commodity of reporting to moderators the slightest allegedly lack of tolerance' is another misunderstood term in that uma1998 wasn't the person who brought this thread to the attention of Staff and my meaning of tolerance wasn't how you interpreted it.

It can be seen that other people have noticed how 'harsh' your threads can be perceived and Wino has very kindly offered his support to assist in overcoming what you may consider 'normal', but maybe just needs to be toned down slightly so as to be more in keeping with the general consensus. Keep the passion though as that is what will ensure these old cars will continue to function for a lot longer!

This post is meant for guidance only and hopefully all parties can glean some information to better understand how others view matters. I'm sure we'd all agree that a harmonious forum is a nicer place to be than one where people are always 'disagreeing'!

Feel free to PM me if my perception is wrong on this matter but remember, happy faces from now on!

Thank you, wino, for your kind offer and for your genuine concern. Don't worry, it's not big deal. I have many friends that reassured me on PM that they understand and support my position. Although I am a member of all forums you see in my signature, in here I feel like home. As a matter of fact, I've got a job offer from a major car workshop in England :) but don't tell anyone.

Not trying to flog off the stuff that's in my MIL's garage, are you???? :)

The only caveat I'll warn you of with the early Felicia's is that the crank nose (and thus the pulley) are different between early and late cars - the PAS "kit" from, say, a 1999 1.3 will not fit a pre-facelift 1.3 - as uma and I found out the hard way!

I suppose one way around it would be to create some sort of "hybrid" system, utilising an electric pump from something like an early Saxo, which would do away with the need to fit the crank pulley, different alternator, water pump and all the other engine gubbins.

Thank you, john, for your point of view. It is indeed the passion for this small, reliable, easy and cheap to maintain / repair car that drives me. Also something else. Felicia owners are not exactly rich people, all over the world. A visit to a Skoda dealer garage for a repair could represent a big hole in the monthly budget. Labour costs and overpriced parts are (sadly) prohibitive. Even worse, I heard that in some countries Skoda dealers refuse to touch classic Skodas. The alternative is DIY. This is where this forum plays the biggest role. With a little help from us, many beginners had the satisfaction of repairing their beloved car themselves at a fraction of the cost right in their back yard or front alley. OP has the opportunity to experience that first hand.

  • 1 month later...

Hey Dudes,

I just can say that the post about the auternatior or so.. was just fun.  In español is very common to joke with the names of parts and it becomes much more complicated witth the diverse nations ans regions. Thats why it would be a nice topic one related to vovabulary. All those expresions from around the planet that are not easy to translate to english.  Anyway, i found tthe situation very funny and this remind us to try to use english (as forein / forum languaje) as neutral as possible.

Well, back to the business, my 20yrs old 1.3 Felicia is close to the 220K kilometers and mechanical sterring is too heavy.  I m also thinking about a powered steering system but it will be niche to see some DIY pictures from a previous surgery on other car.

regards,
