Should I be concerned?

Featured Replies

I bought my 1.2l SE last March. It had 4k on the clock and was 18mths old. It had a 2yr service in the summer including an oil change. I have now reached 15k and finished off a 1l bottle of Castrol in order to keep the oil level in the middle of the dipstick.

Is it usual to get through that amount of oil in 6 months? Is it bedding in or should I be worried about something more serious?

It's not unusual for TSI engines to use oil. Yours sounds less than some, probably normal

Sounds fine. New engines shouldn't be babied too much, it's bad. I would never go beyond 10k miles or 12 months before OC knowing the engines and usual driving habits but I'm sure it'll be fine.

My 1.4 TSI drinks ~1L/12000miles

My 1.8 didnt use any oil for the first 8000 km. Havent checked for the last 2000km, so dont know if it has used any now.

Doesn't sound too much out of the ordinary / unreasonable.

I got rid of a car, different brand, that was using approx. a litre every 3,000 miles - That's circa 4 times your rate of consumption.

The manufacturer suggested anything around a litre every 600 miles was "acceptable".

Not to me it isn't.

It's not the 1970's..

Well, mine's only approx twice as good as that because it had new oil at 9k...

I've had a 2 Litre Diesel VRS 10 months now - I had done around 13k miles and I had discovered it had used over three litres of oil when the low oil warning light came on! I asked the local dealer and they said it was "consumption within tolerances"

yours sounds completely fine!

If it had used 3 litres you would have only had a couple of litres in there wouldn't it?

the VRS oil sump has a capacity of 4.6L - i had maybe just over a litre when the oil light came on

I'd be very worried about the longevity of the turbo then .....

Its a lease car - fully maintained for the remaining 2 and a bit years I have it.

The oil was replaced FOC under warranty to boot :)

So if it goes wrong Skoda UK have to sort it out

Not now they have it on record that you didn't check the oil level regularly and drove round with next to no oil in it they don't.

Next time i order the new 3 or 4 Skodas to the company fleet , which I do every year, I shall bear that in mind.

Same for any manufacturer. It is not the cars responsibility to check the oil level, it is the drivers. Unless there is a fault that is causing excessive oil consumption why would you expect the warranty to cover damage caused by what is effectively lack of maintenance that is documented in the handbook as your responsibility to perform?

If you hadn't checked the tyre pressures regularly would you expect warranty to cover any damage caused by driving round with flat tyres? I know this isn't exactly the same but the same principle applies, part of the basic checks you should be performing.

If you are responsible for a fleet I would have thought that your company car drivers policy specifies that the driver is responsible for basic checks and maintenance and maintaining the vehicle in a roadworthy condition, every company car policy I have ever had to agree to has.

10 months is a very long time to go without checking the oil level.

Lift the bonnet and check the levels now and again Simon.

Will stop you getting stuck somewhere when its least convenient.

I find the oil a bugger to check on my Skoda TDI vRS which is only 400 miles old, so hard to read level on the dip stick, I suppose it is the Fully Synthetic Oil they use. The service book has Castrol Edge so that is what I bought as refill oil.

Wipe it with some kitchen roll and then dip, should be fairly obvious which bit is wet and which bit is dry?

vrs tsi, not used a single drop f oil in 10500 miles.

checking the oil is easy for goodness sake.

Lucky you never owned a Mk2 Fabia VRS, then you would understand oil consumption. I used to carry around a 4 litre can of oil all the time. essentially every other trip to the petrol station but a litre of oil in :)

Which eventually was recognised as a fault. Absolute farce that was.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just checked my vRS oil tonight, done 1800miles, cold engine it was on max, checked it again hot and it looks over.... I've never checked it hot before, Now I'm wondering if it's got too much in! I've never topped it up since new so not sure.

The dipstick is the one with a little ball top and bottom of the measuring area which is grey in colour.

Thats why you check fluids when cold.  They expand when hot.  If its got sufficient oil in when cold its fine

I suggest you read the handbook.

Oil level to be checked at operating temp, not cold.

I'm reply to the original post 1litre in 15k sounds fine.

In reply to some of the other comments... Checking the oil is easy just wipe and dip its not hard? Also the hand book states the oil must be checked at operating temperature not cold. Worth reading it when you get a new car
