Seriously tempted by a VRS 230

Featured Replies

Recently started a new job which has seen a nice pay increase and choice of company car or allowance

Took the allowance as I choice is limited to Vauxhall and diesel (Vauxhall not a problem but diesel is)

After doing the numbers I decided that as long as payments are less than £400 per month then going down the personal new car route is less than it will cost to take the company car route

Was thinking of a Golf R but all the decent PCH deals have dried up and after looking at alternatives decided to pop in to my local Skoda dealer, OH was very dismissive (A SKODA!!!) but after a quick look at the showroom model yesterday and a drive in a VRS 200 this morning I have to say that I'm extremely impressed

Was looking at buying via a specialist leasing company but thought I'd humour the dealership and ask for a quote - I was very surprised at the figures:

VRS 230 estate in black

Kessy

Simply Clever Pack

Front and rear heated seats

Smartlink

Heated washer jets

On a 6 +23 deal its coming in at £275 per month

Only fly in the ointment is I'm waiting for figures on an M135i 5 door - never thought the day would come where I'm undecided between a Skoda and a Skoda

Check out a post further down the forum, but there are big delays on the 230s.

Also consider the Seat Leon cupra 290.

I have been quoted a May build date this morning which is not a problem for me at all. Looked at the Leon but really cannot get on with the interior - very unappealling

I'm waiting for PCP  figures for a vRS & vRS 230 hatch. specd to a similar level of trim & toys.

Problem is, SWMBO thinks I shouldn't bother with the current Octavia, (she has issues re. interior quality / ambience) & either wait for the facelift,

or just stop worrying about money & order a Superb, preferably a 280 L&K.......

Still undecided....

Could you live with the cramped conditions inside that?

I'm only 5'6" and could barely get in the back. And the Octy glovebox is bigger than the 1 series boot.

Negatives of the M135i are the looks - think its pig ugly but the plus is that fabulous straight six and the extra power

Space is not really an issue - only myself, the OH and a young son and I have a Jag S Type R when we need more space

I'm 25+ years in the motor industry and have specialised in finance for a fair few of those, working out the numbers contract hire is more attractive in terms of outlay than either HP or PCP for me - looking over 2 years its simply the cheapest way to run the car

I agree about the looks - but remember what the original 1 series looked like !

Avoid the BMW - expensive and reliably unreliable in my experience

v happy with my 230.  got it last week, 12 weeks or so from ordering.

i've had bmw's in the past but i love the skoda - i wouldn't swap.

Thats good to hear - its a long time since I was impressed with a badge. The BMW is appealing despite the badge rather than because of it - if the M135i is anything more than £40 per month more than the 230 then I'll be choosing the 230 - my wife has gone from being dismissive of the 230 to actually wanting me to just buy it

Andy if you've been working 25 years plus then, you've got a middle aged back which just aren't compatible with BMW 1 series.

I'm really biased but go for the R, you won't regrett it.

It is a lot more fun that the 230 I can promise you.

I just don't really see a M135i and 230 being comparable cars, not in size/space/performance/handling/running costs. Perhaps they are similar cost on finance (? - no idea), but that's got to be the only similarity

I agree, they both tick different boxes in different ways. Neither are perfect for my needs (what car is) and even the monthly payments are unlikely to be that similar. The VRS230 is comfortably under my budget

I like them both, when I get figures for the M135i I will be in a position to decide which represents the most appealing / sensible proposition
