With an auto, does the stop-start stay stopped if you shift to 'N' and release the footbrake?

Designed by an idiot more like.   Encouraging people to sit in traffic with their foot on the brake blinding the driver behind with their fancy LED brake lights.

  • Ignoring the unecessary rudeness, I think you describing my answer as dumb just compounds your fear and/or lack of understanding of technology. Are you a member of the Flat Earth Society by any chanc

  • I've even adjusted my door mirrors to hopefully direct their lights back at them!   Have even though of having a separate mirror in the car, moveable forwards and backwards facing to give them a do

No, it turns the engine back on. Its only off if you're holding the brake in D/S.

On the auto the start stop can be controlled by the amount of pressure on the brake pedal. Hold the pedal just enough to hold the car amd the engine will keep running. Press it firmly and it will stop. It's really neat and controllable once you suss it.

I really like start stop in general - oh, and my boot doesn't need slamming...

Have you run this past the "holding-it-on-the-brake" police?

I'd have thought, like my Pug, (selecting neutral and use of handbrake) when simply pulling back into D restarts the engine .

Bring back the flyoff handbrake too!

Me too.

Never understood what all the fuss is about. I've never felt "blinded" by anyones brake lights.

At night?. ......(old habit to conserve globes also)

Slightly "dazzled", yes, "blinded", no.

But I will say I don't come across many led equipped vehicles !

Rasspberry :D

My pet hate is bright white headlights, whatever the hell they are. Often seemingly badly adjusted, from behind they light you up in your car like the fairy on top of the tree. From the front you're dazzled. That's partly my old eyes, and sensitivity. Nothing I can do about it, so no point in ranting.

Neither my old Yeti nor the new one have LED's front or rear, so I'm not sure why the issue was raised.

Where appropriate, I'll continue to hold it on the brake - and see how I get on with Stop/Start.

Thank you.

One in particular! :D

Two of my Passats had LED rear lights and I really liked the look of them.

But when behind cars with LED rear lights I'm also one of those that find them irritating. It may be because I'm older but I think it's more to do with them being so bright. Even with brake lights on lights years ago they were nowhere near as bright and therefore not as annoying when waiting at traffic lights etc.

Even if we don't have LED rear lights (standard/option on Yetis) high-level brake lights are LED and whilst not blinding can be annoying.

Other thing I've noticed with LED's is that if following at a distance they seem to "blink" (best I can think of at the moment!) as the car ahead goes over undulations etc. which is also annoying. I suppose this is because they are more directional than a bulb?

... high-level brake lights are LED and whilst not blinding can be annoying....

Good point. Forgot them. Mea culpa. Still find the headlights far worse though. I think it's the brightness and older eyes. If a Range Rover is following, and I can - I'll pull in to let them pass. Then give them a dose of my feeble old skool bulbs on full beam.

"Take that Mr Small D**k"

:D

Have even though of having a separate mirror in the car, moveable forwards and backwards facing to give them a dose of their own medicine! Only joking, well half!

When sitting in traffic being annoyed from the car in front I've thought of putting main beam on - but then I'd get accused of being the one in the wrong and you never know what nutter may be in the car!

Instead of some of the pointless technology on modern cars something like rear lights/brake lights that dimmed when stationary for some time with a car behind you would be more useful. That would be no problem with new technology like that in LED headlights that adapt to all sorts of situations.

I have decided to turn the Stop Start OFF unless I drive in the London area!

Why?

Why?

Because I can.

First thing I do after starting the car is turn the damn thing off!

I forget on the odd occasion and it surprises me when the engine stops!

I really don't understand why anyone would turn it off? It's unobtrusive and saves you money so why do you do it? Just makes no sense.

I've now got so used to mine that I sometimes don't even notice that the engine has turned off until I hear the relay click/starter when I push my clutch down to set off

Once whilst messing with phone book using the steering wheel controls whilst stationary at traffic lights it didn't start when the clutch was pushed down and a message popped up on the dash to use the key to start. I've not managed to replicate this since though

The saving money part is debateable and even if it does is hardly worth having.

The car may be designed for increased starting but it's still wear and tear on components.

If you are in a queue moving forwards now and again it's annoying and unnecessary to have the engine stopping and starting frequently and unnecessarily.

If the amount of time being stationary warrants stopping the engine I'm perfectly able to do that myself and am a better judge of whether it is worth it or not.

And I'll decide when I want certain things to happen with the car, not the car, thank you!

But you do decide. On a manual you use the clutch or an auto by how far you press the brake.

It's wear and tear that the car has been designed for. Do you leave it running on your drive at night to save the battery, starter and demisters the next morning?

1/2 L/hour savings!

What's the point.
