OK starting to look for replacement PC - I want to increase my folding rate without going silly - have not got space for a standalone folding machine - so will need to be capable of browsing and games.

Which CPU's do you use ?

How much memory ?

AMD 64 4000, several P4 3GHZ machines, a 3.6ghz Xeon limited to 50% cpu and my aged dual processor P3 866 with both cpu's folding away.

I was using a 2.8 P4 as my primary machine but thats sold now, so looking for a good replacement, which is also value for money.

Just concentrate on that ghz figure, and decent RAM - the rest is sacrificial and unnecessary, so can be basic budget stuff, apart from the PSU that is.

I voted for everything... coz i kinda do

When all up and working:

P IV 2.4 HT 1024 PC4200

P Centrion dothan 1.7 1024 PC4000

P IV 2.8 2048 PC3200

Some amd thing...and another 64bit amd I should use but swmbo would nail me

to the wall if she found out.

Xenon 3.0 12288, okay I lie, I only use 1024 on a VM :D

Of course not all of these have been active of late :(

Seems OK, but I would buy your own bits from Ebuyer. It looks like the above thing comes without some essential bits. You could build a very decent system from bits of Ebuyer, specific to folding (budget graphix, sound,HDD) for around £400, if you wanted one of those dual athlons. :)

And Mr D, why have you not got a folding box in your signature, Mr Briskoda, webmaster, Sir? :D

*cough* had it for a few days before anybody else, then removed *cough*

Probably me I removed folding yesterday :o even with the insides clean and dust free the whole thing is getting too hot ....it's a AMD 64 3500 and was doing quite well in the points and work unit stakes.....but just can't afford to risk it any more

Reducing the CPU usage percentage doesn't make a diference then?

One of the machines at work started closing down for no apparent reason, so guessed it may be down to the folding load. Reduced the %usage and that seems to have helped.

I'm using what I have at home - one PC with an AMD Athlon chip:-

Neither are particularly fast, but they run 24/7

AMD 2000+ with 512MB, bit poor really but then my machine plays COD2 online without hassle so why change?

  • 2 weeks later...

My main machine now is a XP2200+ running at 1.86ghz - My wants something a little faster to run alongside it. ;)

Mike, is that style of system info you've posted up something Linux only, or is it something anyone can copy from some DOS prompt command?

P4 3000ghz, 512Ram

£300 thank you DELL :D

Weird,

My HTPC which is also folding 24/7 is a P4 3.0 and the case is hot enough to fry eggs on, however its been that hot for the 8 or more months its been folding with no ill effects so far.

My new Athlon 64 4000 case has goodventilation, and the system isnt hot at all. This system has the stock CPU cooler, one small front case fan and a bigger one to the rear and a side convection air vent. This PC has been running 24/7 recently.

My hands

That particular style of system info is (AFAIK) Linux only. it's a listing of the/proc/cpuinfo file (which isn't really a file at all, it's a special view of the information which the Linux kernel obtained by interrogating the CPU at boot-up).

You can get Windows utilities which do much the same thing, though - just Google on the keyword "cpuinfo". Probably the only unique thing about the Linux cpuinfo is the bogomips figure.

Aha

Well, pretty soon I'll have an Athlon 3500 helping me out. Thanks Fluff! ;)

Personally:

1GHz PIII mobile with neither more nor less than 512 Mb but exactly that. It's my work machine so it's not 100% dedicated to folding, but the nights are OK when it's left at work.

@Jason - where does the little folding box come from then?

From the overclockers forum. Let me see

Your user number is 130315

And the link in my sig is: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/sigs/sigimage.php?u= 130318 (left space deliberately) So putting in

sigimage.php?u=130315

Stick that in your sig

HJope that was clear - I had to edit/delete about 6 times. :o

Sorry, what is the overclockers forum?
