Ignition on - then 6 chimes!

Featured Replies

Hi Newbie from Cornwall here,

I have just bought a 2003 Elegance 1.9TDI, each time you switch on the ignition you get 6 chimes! I have done a scan with VCDS but have no DTC's showing.

I have owned a couple of Audi's and still have a VW and normally when you get the chimes there is some warning or advice shown in the multi function display, I know the information display will not show as much as a later can bus model but nothing is showing - any ideas what the 6 chimes may indicate?

Also there was no code given with the radio - I managed to remove it with a Jr hacksaw blade just in case someone has written the code on the body, however unfortunately not.

Whats the best way to get the code?

Thanks.

Are you wearing your seatbelt?

Radio doesn't need a code if it's the original HU for the car.

Mine also chimes, just got it but the chimes sound like door ajar, no seatbelt type chimes....so ignored

The chimes are there whilst the glow plugs heat up - if you wait until after the chimes stop the car will start easier - you'll find that as the weather gets warmer the number of chimes will reduce.

The chimes should have nothing to do with glow plugs.

The chimes can also be caused by faults.

Spot on;

Put the seat belt on first then put the key in and switch on and voila no chimes.

On my old MY06 Passat and current Eos the seat belt chime only comes on on when you reach about 10 mph if either the driver or if the front passenger seat is occupied and is not wearing their belt. if you don't put your belt on it keeps chiming and seat belt text comes on the MFD, this makes you put the belt on or go mad with the chimes (I think it stops after a few minutes but I have never reached the time-out)

Also spot on with the radio, the car had been stood for a year so I had to fit a fresh battery; I only tried the radio with the ignition off and the word SAFE comes up on the display so I switched it back off and assuming I need the code, however just tried with the ignition on first then switch on the radio the word SAFE came on for a few seconds and the radio then activated; job done.

On the Passat and Eos if you have had the battery disconnected when you switch on the radio you get the text on the radio saying LEARN while it communicates with the ECU and then it activates.

Next job; head gasket, water pump, timing etc. (ASV 1.9 TDI engine)

Thanks for your help.
