VW Group "Reman genuine parts" Warranty Repair

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Some of you may have read some of my other topics. My May 2014 VRS (4200 miles on clock) Blew a turbo which took the engine and exhaust with it. Its being repaired under warranty with "Exchange" parts. Its policy within the VW group:

13) Where applicable, exchange parts must be used to complete a repair; only with a new vehicle prior to delivery and a vehicle up to one month and 1800 miles is it acceptable to fit a new item instead of exchange. If an exchange part is not available due to parts availability a new part may be used however proof of the availability issue must be recorded in your claim text. There is no requirement to contact the Warranty Department to ask for authority to replace new parts if an exchange item is unavailable.

VW have a factory in Germany where they re-machine used engine parts and bring them back up to a new standard and build engines out of them. The only used part that they build replacement engines out of is the Block. All wear and tear items within the engines are new. this is a quote from a Skoda engineer

"An exchange engine uses the block but is all stripped down and wear and tear items are renewed

such as crankshaft, camshafts bearings ,pistons, conrods , injectors oil cooler ,oil pump  these are built

as per a new engine and at the same plant "

The cost of a remanufactured TSI engine is roughly 2k less than a brand new one. Does anyone have any legitimate detailed knowledge on the process or the quality of a remanufactured engine? Some people I have spoke to have said its as good as a new engine and others say its actually better not sure how they came to that conclusion. It comes with 2 years parts warranty and is covered under the remainder of the manufacturers warranty. I was not keen on the idea when they first told me this however I am slowly coming round to the idea. Does anyone have knowledge of reman reputation/problems or have themselves had reman parts replaced in their vehicle under warranty?

I am looking at a reman engine and turbo and I believe that they are replacing the exhaust and cat with new parts due to oil contamination. Any reassurance/experience anyone can offer would be gladly received.

Not much to worry about IMHO. They will just use reworked castings like the block and any casings/covers that are not prone to wear.

I see no problem with them, I'm pretty sure I had some reman parts in my pervious VRS.

You'll be under warranty so nothing to worry about.

See page 5 ' Replacement parts warranty '......

The Warranty Replacement Parts / Work is only under Manufacturers Warranty until the Original Manufacturers Warranty Expires.

*This includes a replaced engine or turbo etc.*

Not a 2 Year Warranty on parts if Skoda (VW) are paying, (Unless there is still 2 years or more left of the Original Manufacturers Warranty)

but if You pay something or some Warranty Company then the parts have a 2 Year Warranty.

............................

Except with the likes of the Replacement 1.4TSI Twincharger Engines and others, Skoda Customer Services tell you what i just typed,

and then you argue for a Extended Warranty because of their Products Known Issues and failure rate

and on a case by case basis you Get an Extended Warranty on Parts & Labour.

If you have doubts on accepting the Warranty Repairs being offered best get legal advice.

I guess its a difficult position for you.

This is what VW tell you they will do so you don't have much choice but to accept it.

As long as its covered by the same warrenty as a new engine you should be fine.

Depending on how the next 2 years go (i.e. if there are no engine releated issues) you can then decide if you keep it when its out of warranty.

One thing I wouild do is ask for a complete list of all the components replaced (to confirm the CAT & exhaust are replaced).

This will help you in the future just in case there are any problems.

The thing is that a May 2014 First Registered cars Manufacturers Warranty expires on May 2017.

The Engines Warranty which ever they fit Expires on May 2017, no matter if New off the Line or Refurbished from the Factory.

So the least you demand is a 2 Year Extension on your Warranty when Skoda pay to fit the replacement engine.

They say they do not do this, well that is not true, they can and they do and they have done,

there are threads on this matter in the MK2 Fabia section.

'Consistent treatment'  thread and others.

This was started by vrskeith, he has a new user name now.

People need to keep fighting for the right treatment,

but now Alasdair Stewart has gone as Brand Director of Skoda UK and a new one has taken over,

he has worked long enough with Skoda & VW in Parts and After Sales to know the issues,

so get everything in writing from Skoda UK Customer Services.

(they like to say overblown on the Internet, they wish!)

To be honest the block will have been inspected and checked before they waste money rebuilding a new engine using it.

It's going to be at least as good as a newly cast block and you won't have any unexpected surprises.

I'd say nothing to worry about, esp if your engine number doesn't change.

Do you own it or is it on finance?

If the cylinder walls were marked and they bored the engine oversize to suit then it could also gain capacity. Don't know if you would notice this when driving though on a small displacement engine. Felt an improvement on some of the v8s I've done in the past but they were also tired when before I started.

I have rebuilt bike engines that have thrown rods before and they make just as much power after a proper rebuild with new internals even though the insides of the crank cases are a bit battered

In the old days of highly tuned A series engines, you always wanted a 'seasoned' block that had gone through many thermal cycles as a basis for a large rebore.

Fresh blocks had a higher failure rate.

I visited the dealership today. took a look at the dismantled engine. They are putting a brand new turbo on; a reman engine; exchange cat; new exhaust system... all of the hoses and piping on the engine are being replaced as new due to the oil contamination. I just hope that itll be as good as new. i just want that piece of mind that the reman engine isnt second quality and is as good and well made as a new engine.

Are you going to contact Skoda UK Customer Services and get them to arrange an Extended Warranty on the Engine & Labour,

and not just leave you with the remainder of the Original Manufactures Warranty.?

ie Expires May 2017

A rebuilt engine will most likely be better than a production line engine, provided the tech is good.

I work for a very large company, and we use dealer rebuild or manufacturer reman for warranty where possible. In our situation, warranty is intended to return a part, component or machine to it's condition prior to failure, not necessarily to brand new condition.

as such really, there does put really need to be an extension on the warranty of the machine, however we do generally give a warranty on new and reman parts.

The quality of our reman engines is aimed to give the same life as a new engine, and the facilities work to the same standards, but there are also gains in sustainability - reusing a block, even with machining is much more environmentally friendly and sustainable than casting a new block.

Skoda UK are not trying to keep it quiet that they use remanufactured parts, they state on their web page that they do and sell them with a manufacturer guarantee under the name Genuine Parts.

I agree with the comment about environmental consideration and sustainability with respect to reman parts.

However, I'm sure those who see no problem with it would take a different view on this if it were their own car. I would not be happy with it but if I wasn't aware it was happening then I would be none the wiser and most likely never even notice.
