2007 Octavia VRS TDI Bizarre Front Wiper Problems.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Proud owner of a 2007 Octavia VRS TDI that has suddenly developed a weird fault with the front windscreen wipers, I have searched the forums for info but came up blank.

The problem started 3 days ago & is a real weird one, when the engine gets up to operating temperature the front wipers start going by themselves sometimes even varying in speed, the switch has no effect & even when I switch the engine off, remove the keys & lock the cat they keep operating even for upto 15 minutes afterwards, once they stop they will not switch on again with the stalk until the vehicle has sat for a period of time.

I have scanned the car with vcds & found no faults & their is nothing installed on the car that should not be.

Any ideas?

Barry

Your car is equipped with rain sensor that operates the wipers due to any vibrations hitting the front glass try to check the rain sensor for any faults.

Never heard of a rain sensor that functions by detecting vibrations, are you sure it's not internal reflection based?

That's what I thought too. Also it's unlikely a vRS has the RLS as it was not standard fit in the UK.

If the rain sensor is active the wipers will begin moving when street sand hits the front glass or if you hit with your thumb on the front glass.

By that thinking then I water was to run down the screen, say from the roof, there would be no vibration and so the wipers would not operate. This is not the case. Also I can't see that they would work in a light drizzle, or driving at speed would cause more than enough vibration to trigger the wipers.

Thanks everyone for the help, car is fitted with auto wipers but still happens with sensor disconnected, have a new wiper motor on order, fingers crossed that it sorts the problem, just odd that it only happens when engine is up to temperature.

I've had some unusualness on a previous car when the wiper motor relay began to fail

Hope the motor sorts it but if not that would be where I'd look next :)

Do the wipers have a relay? I thought they were controlled by the body control module. Edited by fireman8109

They will be controlled by the BCM but a high current component like a motor usually has a relay to protect the BCM internals

A *very* quick Google search would lead me to believe that there is a physical relay, but don't quote me on that 100% :)

Looking at the wiring diagrams, there is no relay for the front wiper. If there is, it'll be inside the wiper unit and not replaceable.

It has a feed directly from the battery via a 30a fuse and earth. There is also a LIN bus connection back to the BCM which will be used for diagnostics and controlling the wipers.

As you have VCDS, it might be worth looking to see if the wiper motor is visible (should be a subsystem under the BCM) and if there are any measuring blocks to see why it's turned on. As Tech1e says, it's probably a broken wiper unit.

Just a quick update, changed the wiper motor today & the the problem still exists, starting to think that I have a faulty cem, can I just fit a used one (same part number etc) or would I need a new one?

I'd get it on VCDS and see if the switch is activating it or if the central electrics control unit is doing it on its own.

2007 car doesn't have a BCM as such.

I have only just purchased vcds, could you please offer any advice on how to carry out such a test.

Thanks

Barry
