Windscreen Replacement

Recommended Posts

Morning all. First real journey in the new car 400 mile trip to in laws and a lorry flicked a stone onto the windscreen after 3 miles. Checked the measurements and it's too big to repair so autoglass will be replacing my windscreen on Tuesday.

Autoglass are saying I will have to get the camera behind rear view mirror recalibrated which is not included. This is because of having ACC.

Now I thought the ACC radar was in the middle of the front grill and wouldn't be affected. Also the rain sensor on the windscreen doesn't need recalibration. I don't have TSR or Lane Assist.

I do have Front Assist which is standard; is this camera located behind the rear view mirror.

Thanks all.

Worth checking with Skoda in case there are warranty issues. I only flag it because BMW would not cover any warranty claims for paint damage, rust, leaks, dashboard etc unless the screen was a Semperit (OEM) screen fitted in accordance with factory requirements. Auto glass stated they would not provide OEM and could not guarantee how it was fitted (nothing like inspiring confidence in them is there!) and they would not provide any warranty cover.

As a result the two screen failures (stones on the M6) were both done by BMW and completely paid for by my insurers, less the standard excess (£50 at that time) for replacements.

Autoglass completely messed up the first change I ever had done (also on a BMW) as they fitted the wrong screen which was neither IR rejecting nor had the right auto-light sensor. They couldn't get the correct screen but only realised AFTER cutting the old one out. They paid BMW to fit one.

I have never let them near any car I own again!

Cheers for that. I will try and get through to Skoda tomorrow. Autoglass is booked for Tuesday so will try and get an answer before then.

It's not a heated screen, so no issue there. I had phoned the number on my insurance website for windscreens and it automatically went through to autoglass as there authorised repairer.

If I went through dealer I don't know if insurance would cover it. Time to get the policy docs out.

As the car is so new you'll probably find that your insurers will OK the fitting of an original replacement. I'd ring them and be very insistent about having an original fitted.

There's still an important question that could affect most of us at some point: does the camera behind the screen need recalibration once the screen has been replaced? This might apply only to cars with Lane Assist and/or Smart Light Assist for instance.

SWMBO's screen went on her vRS about 3 months from new. This was back in 2013 when the model was still pretty new. Autoglass did much scratching of heads and had to order a screen directly from Skoda. Took about 2 weeks IIRC.

The fitter seemed to spend most of the time on the phone to his office regarding the Lane Assist camera. The logic seems to be that the camera doesn't need recalibrating provided it hasn't been unplugged during the replacement process. How true this is I don't know, but the Lane Assist has been perfectly fine since then.

Has anyone got an official line on this one? Maybe we were just lucky with ours?

No idea on that one, I thought that someone had posted about having a heated windscreen replaced on a Superb 3 on the forum, tried searching for it yesterday but couldn't find it, if we can find them they might know.

I knew I'd seen it somewhere, thank you.

He also mentions recalibration so unless its a vicious scam set up between Autoglass and Skoda it could be true I guess!

looks like there are different types of heated windscreens,

before select option "heated" i have made GPS reception test on one dealer's L&K ?.?TDI car

and didn't noticed any signal drop: Which phone holder?

now i have collected Style 2.0 TSI and GPS signal reception is awful 😞

another idea is, first car were without GSM reception improve area under the radio,

maybe this device creates some interference

I think I'll email Skoda and get the official line on it. Autoglass may well just default to the 'it needs recalibrating' line to cover their asses. Considering we are talking a few mm variation on where the screen can actually be fitted, there might be some tolerance in the system to allow for this - who knows?

OTOH, the camera that controls the SLA system could be replaced 2-3mm out of its original position, which might equate to a 2-3m difference down the road where the headlight beams are operating. This could knock the SLA right out of kilter when it comes to blocking out the main beam around a car you are following.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but did you get and answer to this one?

Does anybody know if the TSR camera the same problem?

The reason I ask is that I picked up a large crack in my screen yesterday and need a replacement asap.

Oh no! If I need to claim, I can't see my insurance company agreeing to pay this sort of money. I have a clause which says I need to go through Autoglass for all windscreen repairs/ replacements.

Could it affect the resale value IF this is true and becomes common knowledge?
