Yeti 4x4 testing the system

Featured Replies

Is putting an electrical conductive paste over a circuit board container a good idea?

Well I have been under the car and its a generation 2 haldex control unit you can see which one it is in the link go to autofaultfind  on posting #24. it is mounted on the backaxle on the nearside ( passenger side) so I drove the rear nearside wheel up a ramp and handbrake on, in gear and wheel chocks.

I thought all the classic Yetis were Haldex gen 4, with the facelift being gen 5. The article suggests they are the same on the exterior.

Correct.

I can only say that the shape of the unit is generaton 2 as per the link in the web site of the firm that repairs them.I am unable to say what generation the pcb inside is ?

Can't see what problem copper ease will do on the outside of the unit ( but if anyone wants to put forward reasons why it will cause problems .fire away ) the pcb inside  is insulated from the metal of the container anyway there is no conection to the body of the vehicle its got to withstand road muck ,rain, salt !! and all sorts of rubbish thrown at it mounted where it is so a covering of grease won't do it any harm.

Only problem I can see is that after driving in the wet you may get some drips of water that has run off the grease that might leave a mark on your drive.

A smear of silicone sealant round the outside of the case would have been a neater, longer lasting and less messy solution.

I'm not convinced mine is 100%.

Hardly ever got wheel spin in the old 2.0CR but this new 1.4TSi seems to be a little more spin happy.

Considering its got less torque I would have expect it to be the other way around.

In the lakes tomorrow so I'll be on the lookout for some slippy stuff

Does a PCB get hot?.

Hi Copper grease EvoT here !

Yes a good point about the silicone sealer I did think of using it but it would need to applied by your fingers as there is no space to get a gun in,

I've used silicone before for all sorts of things on my Movano vans I own, I have even used  expensive brands  from screwfix, even if the surface is clean before you apply it, the silicone always debonds from metal just a slight lifting at the edge will start the whole bead of silicone to debond like around a shower tray or bath edge.

We also have very low temperatures here in the winter can go down to -18deg C, silicone hates very low temperatures when it is cured on metal, it is fine to a point on wood and brick but give it a couple of years it will still debond. All if this is from years of spotting debonded failures !!

If i'm doing a job that really needs a very  permanent seal use 'SIKAFLEX 'its far better than silicone it will bond and stay bonded to anything but is a real pain to remove even worse than silicone the only problem is it is £7 a tube and is VERY date of production critical.

its great for shower trays or anything that needs bonding and made watertight for ever !! like roof lights on a caravan or caravan windows. You are now thinking 'He's a plumber ! aahha no I'm not ! wrong there !!

Anyway thanks for your concern but my parking area is on tarmac knobley grit type tarmac so a few drips won't harm it, in a couple of days the copper grease will be nearly black as it reacts with the air, out of the tin it turns very dark you may have seen it on the back of brake disc pads when new ones have been fitted it seems to disapear in a few weeks when new.

So thats why i used copper grease.

its also wash under the car time of the year get the hose pipe out and give it a good underbody wash right underneath i use a bent piece of copper pipe on the end of the hose to get underneath and down the back of the wheel discs and the back of the wheels plenty of clean water i never use a power washer to much pressure but some people may like using them what ever floats your boat !!

Does a pcb get hot ( depends what the pcb is designed to do )

Well if it has a processor chip fitted and depending on what its doing and how 'big  a memory it has it will get hot thats why some home fixed station pc's have water cooled processors but these are usually'' gamers pc's''

The pcb on the Haldex has a massive intergrated circuit chip which is swopping information with the main cpu in the front of the car( away from road muck !!!!) processors do not like viabration how they keep working in a car defies logic but all cpu's on cars are solid state with no cooling fans built into them ( or they used to be unless we have someone out there who has more info on this please let us all know ) there not like home pc's

Regarding heat well it may get a little warm  but not 'hot' the cover does not work as a 'heat sink' So the board itself does not get hot only the processor unit on the board and with no form of cooling system on this type of board I would say it generates very little heat even when 'working' hard.

It seems like accessibility take priority over life span.

'Spares' must love 'em.

Pity they didn't do the same with the EGR!

Pity they didn't do the same with the EGR!

Exactly

It would be an entirely different proposition if it was both accessible AND serviceable (cleaning etc).

My Pug has the turbo & DPF at the front .....not sure where the EGR is though - fingers crossed.

Further delays to German market cheat 'fix' due to reduced economy resulting........testers now govt ones replacing VW's

Hi Ryeman any chance you can point us to the source of your information we are all still waiting for the 'letter' from Skoda in the UK  to tell us what is going to happen with our cars and when we need to bring them in to the dealer. Your quickposting is very new news to me not seen anything in the press ???

This thread seems to have strayed OT - and at the risk of one quick reply to EvoT, I received a further 'procrastination' letter yesterday saying they were still finalising the rectifications.
Hopefully back on topic now. ;)

...Hopefully back on topic now. ;-)

I would hazard a guess that the reason there is no warning light for when the Haldex fails is because Skoda / VW think there is no reason to give feedback:

- if it isn't working you may or may not notice

- if it is working then there is no problem

- fault detection sensors and circuits can themselves fail

On the other hand simply comparing wheel rotational speeds fore and aft (via the ABS sensors) would tell you (based on some time period eg 1-2 secs) whether you had wheels spinning one end but not the other. If the car found this happens a lot it could presumably tell you that:

- 4WD: your Haldex is bust

- 2WD: should have gone 4WD :)

I posted in General section.....hope this works for you

We obviously need sensors to report when sensors fail.......er I think ))

  • 1 year later...

Hi

I recently had to have my Yeti 4x4 system fixed, the pump and filter was dead due to the fact they are not listed in the servicing schedule, main dealer servicing from new and no mention of the need of this servicing.

but now fixed I put the car on jacks to test and I can see all 4 wheels spinning (good sign).

If I put my foot on 1 of the real wheels, it stops, no resistance. Is there no limiting of the slip on one side?
