If you had £30-50k to spend on a toy...

Featured Replies

Bit unusual to see one that's got 4 wheels, they normally have a single rear don't they?

I've been chewing this over since the thread started. I don't like modern cars. I'm not bothered about going fast. I have fairly simple taste and don't like flashy or ostentatious things.

Much as I love old VW's, you couldn't spend over £5k on one without becoming a scene victim.

Then I reminded myself, for all of the above, I used to own a couple of Porsches, and I loved them. They weren't fast or particularly flashy, just 924 2.0's, but they were great to drive.

So at that point, I worked it out, I'd have a 912, preferably an early one where you can see a bit of Beetle shining through in them.

C63, no wait an M2, oh hang on, a C7 Corvette, no no that's not it, a 911 maybe, or a Caymen as that's a relative of the 911 so counts as one choice depending on which car is availed, perhaps an M3/4,

  • luckily I bought a current 30-50k car when it was £14k in 2007 , couldn't afford something like this now...  I bloomin love it ..  Its somewhat changed from when I bought it ..

Yes Steve, they did normally have only 3 wheels but around here the middle of some of the roads are so bad I decided that 2 at the back might be more comfortable. I've never been a speed merchant, but prefer "silly" and this is definitely that. I did look at a 2CV but they are now getting silly money, even imported from France through a friend.

There is place up the road that restores 911's. (http://www.porsche-restoration.co.uk/)

Just bought my "toy"

It'll be a long time before I've got 50k to go on a fun car. If I'm lucky, I might manage it in the next lifetime.

If it was green then that would pretty much be my toy Porche from the 80s.

Lovely that.

Dodge Viper GTS but the 90s shape, would probs be extremely let down but was always my pinup car

A low milage well looked after Ford Escort RS Cosworth for me!

So something that handles like a Lotus, pretty as an Aston and sounds like a 70's Detroit muscle car

So a shelby Cobra...oh wait you said £30000-50000 :)

5 of these for me and my mates the rest goes on race fees

on a purely personal note i'd love a Tuscan but feae 1) it's breakdown (a lot) 2) when it was actually running it's performance would outweight my abilities and kill me (quickly)

I'd actually struggle to spend the money.

I don't really enjoy driving that fast on the road.

there's always too many what if's and other numpty's to worry about.

so my money'd go on something nice to tow with and drive daily (Range Rover?), a trailer, a reasonable race car, and all the associated maintence and fees.

or probably actually just pay Ginetta to do it all for me and then you get a road legal G40 too

Nice to dream, but I don't ever expect to be in a position to make it reality. University (for the kids) is so damned expensive these days.

Thats a pretty good deal...

Get something with a Rain/Winter mode on the ECU!

The Mustang has been way sideways twice in the rain today at very low speeds.

Finally I gave up and tried Snow/Rain mode.

Thank the Lord, soft throttle response, different change-up points, softer dampers.

Even if you're buying a summer toy, it's still got to get you home if the weathers turns bad :)

Nissan GTR without a second thought

The Exige Wardy suggested or a Datsun 240Z then modified to be as close to the Devil Z specs as possible. 600bhp turbo, 3.1 L Type engine. Or go N/A and use the E46 M3 engine, 3.2 6 cyl, 343bhp. In blue of course.

I've always said I'd love to have a 911 about as old as I am - and I'd buy something modern and reliable with the change left over from insuring it.

If I got a 911 it would be this one -

1975-1977-porsche-911-turbo-3744_6685_96

I think a Caterham, Exige V6 or R8 are probably high up the list.

Caterham is an easy first choice since it'll barely depreciate.

But I would probably have to try a V8 Muscle car just to see, it's the sort of thing that you'll fall in love with or not.

That wicked 930 turbo you pictured is inflation proof too. Theyre going up and you'll only just get a nice one at the 50k end of your budget. Perfect ones are double :o
