Octavia to Yeti..engine recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi....after 9 yrs and 3 Octavia's I am thinking of getting a Yeti (4 wheel drive), .....preferred option is a 2 ltr 110 hp version, but not familiar with this engine..have had 1.8 petrol, 2.0 ltr 140 hp diesel, and currently a 1.4tsi petrol (which is great)..my main concerns are cam belt/chain, dpf and DMS...can anybody offer any comments re reliability or issues to look out for with the the 2.0 ltr 110 hp diesel?

thanks...

if you like the 1.4 tsi then why not go for that in the yeti? I recently went the other way, from a 1.2 yeti to a 1.4 Octavia (but I'd had 5 Octavias before the yeti)

Hi ta for the reply...just assumed the 1.4 would be a little small for a 4 wheel drive

I assume you intend to buy a used yeti.  According to the Skoda web-site the new one is available with 1.2TSI 110  and 2.0TDI 110; both with 2-wheel drive.  Also 2.0TDi 150 with 4-wheel drive.

Yesterday I had a loan Yeti (1.2TSI manual) when my Octavia was in for a service.  It felt very under powered; especially up the Cotswold hills that surround where I live.  Boot was also very small.  I will have to look at a used VW Tiguan which has a larger boot and a wider chose of engines; including a 2.0TDi 177ps.

2.0 TDI that you are thinking about is 110PS and the 1.4 TSI is 150PS, both with 250nm of max torque!

Exactly

The latest small turbo petrols are a revelation and long term 'economy' is at least similar.

(assuming VW CAN produce an engine that doesn't need 'confidential' fixes)

Are you looking for new or used? The 1.4 petrol is currently only available in the top spec 4x4 L&K. Used, it was a bit of an unloved orphan in the early models with a 120 odd bhp engine. If looking for used, provided fuel consumption isn't a big issue for you, you may be better seeking out a used 1.8 TSI 4x4.

Hi all and many thanks for taking the time to reply....I am looking for 2nd hand, probably up to about £12k....I do fancy a higher spec model, I had an Elegance (Octavia) 2 cars ago, and currently have an SE. I would prefer 4 wheel drive as we currently have an "old" 4 wheel drive that we use in the winter and "swap" for an old MX5 for the summer, but would ideally like to "lose" a car. Although I really like the 1.4 tsi (122hp) engine in the Octavia, I have heard that there are reliability issues with the higher hp 1.4's?..likewise the 1.8s (I would probably opt for a 1.8 petrol if its as smooth as the 1.4...but again, I have read that these engines have major reliability problems?..or have these been resolved after  say 2011?

many thanks

I have a 1.8 TSi, 2009 year, and to be honest with all the scare mongering about the chain issues and oil consumption etc, i wouldnt buy another, but ours is fine (uses oil but about a pint every few thousand miles) , and its recently been remapped to well over 200bhp.

I would avoid diesel myself, but thats just because i own cars more than 4 years and don't want emissions issues

If winter is the only reason you want 4wd then just fit some winter tyres or cross climates if you prefer. Better than a 4x4 on summer rubber any day

wot e as above said,

And as proven over umpteen years, RWD or FWD, + Winter tyres (or new/fresh ord tyres) + some uncommon "gumption" beats 4WD any day o the week.

simply

Think!

&

anticipate

And be prepared to accept the consequences of the actions taken.

Its never an accident

..fair point..I fitted winter tyres to my old Octy, and was great in general "cold" and icy conditions...worthy of consideration and a lot cheaper in the long run I'm sure...ta for the input

It's what I'm going to fit when new tyres are required. Be a little while though, after 6k. the fronts are hardly worn, which is good!
