Cost for replacing rear main engine seal?

Featured Replies

Well hoping I've got the name exactly right! My fabia is kindly leaking oil on my drive, and my local garage says it's coming out of the rear main seal. It's not gushing oil out, and I don't think it's causing any harm to the engine, otherwise the garage would have told me.

I know it's a large job to replace the seal, mainly as there are lots of bits to take out to get to it. Has anyone got any idea of cost to get it fixed?

I can ask my garage to give me a quote, but I'd rather have a ball park figure before I waste their time if it's going to be more than I've got to spend

Give us a clue, what engine?

1.4 petrol one... I'm guessing that makes a difference :)

16v or 8v?

8v.

It's a massive pain in the arse job since the gearbox has to come off and the clutch and flywheel as well, not worth doing and frankly I'll be surprised if it isn't just the sump plug leaking either from stripped threads or poor sealing. Time to get under there and see for yourself or get yer pants pulled down by the garage.

On mine it was the crank pulley oil seal that was leaking. Make sure it's not that on yours. Much easier job.

Pretty sure it's the rear seal, and garage are not making it up.

May be chech more precise - It can be the sump seal? It is not normally that the the rear main seal is wear on the gearbox-side.

If so, think about the clutch, since it easy to change the same time the gearbox is out.

How many km/miles has the car gone?

The tricky thing is they won't know until you take the gearbox out.

Yeah, its not an easy job. As said the gearbox has to be removed as well as the clutch and flywheel to see behind it where the seal is located, so price wise will be similar to clutch and flywheel labour but obviously without the price of the clutch and flywheel :D

Sometime you can font the leak with first cleaning around the sump, start the engine an let it go an look around under.

Some just change the gasket in hope that it will help. More easy than take the gearbox out.

Yes, anyway its likely to be the winklecrackelpumpgavel for this job ;)

I've had plenty of occassion to not trust a garage, why ever leave to chance.

Head gasket, £500 job, was actually £15 (stuck stat). No return business for you, ever.

Ok Rover dealers don't exist any more, but what would prefer, master or slave cylinder gone ? Just the slave, again silly similar price to fix instead of £300 ish.

That's even before you get into the sheer incompetence. Halfrauds service guys, when they used to that is, managing to destroy an engine with wrong plugs ( they should have checked). Also failed to tighten some wheels too. etc etc.

Slight update, the oil appears to be leaking from the drivers side towards the front of the engine compartment.

Check around the Oil Cooler !

Probably not, with no car type listed in his thread profile I assumed it was a diesel, however having now looked at his earlier thread I see it's a petrol, why folk cannot list their cars on their profile I don't know.
