Featured Replies

Hi i have a Felicia 1.3MPI GLXi estate 1999, and haven't had it long and the brakes seem to pretty crap but was told the front brakes had been done but i aint sure its got the usual signs of wear i.e metallic grating noise, and brake pedal has to be pushed pretty far down to get any results, also i noticed recently that sometimes when turning one the wheels sometimes.

Take the front wheels off and have a look at the disc's, if you can not do that then I would take it to a garage after all you do need brakes.

Wheels off. Check first for any brake fluid leak. Check for corroded calliper pistons and pins.

If the pedal is spongy, you must bleed the brakes. But if the pedal has a long stroke, that indicates a loss of tightness. Might need new calliper pistons and o-rings or a repair kit for the brake master cylinder.

If you hear a grinding noise when braking the pads or discs are worn out. If so i suggest to replace both at the same time. I recently bled my brakes on my felicia with a nice castrol super dot4 and now i got a great feel of the brake pedal

Also the rear drum shoes might be worn out aswell. When i changed mine it made a big difference to the pedal travel

Has the car been standing unused for a while? You might get a grinding sound and a not very effective pedal for a little while until all the rust cleans off and the pads bed back in. Standing is the worst thing for new brakes. Providing you don't have a "pumping" back through the pedal as you brake, they should clean up if this is the case.

You are still best to take the wheels off and have a look though. A genuine parts disc and pad kit (yes they're still available!) isn't very expensive. And the caliper repair kit Ricardo mentioned is less than £10 a side.
