BKD Replacing Turbo.

Featured Replies

I'm thinking as I may have some extra cash in the next few months, and my turbo is in need of a strip down and clean etc etc due to sticky vanes, that I might get a whole new one from Darkside or Turbo Technics.

I haven't found any threads on how to or guides on how to remove and replace it.

Any help would be appreciated on how hard a job this would be.

I'm pretty good at this kinda stuff having removed the EGR and cooler already + cleaned the turbo, and replaced the intercooler on this car so not too scared of a challenge.

Still no body got any help on how easy etc etc it is to swap the turbo out?

No guides any where?

It's fairly straight forward. The 16v head actually makes getting to the manifold nuts easier.

Turbo comes out the top.

You will need

Turbo

Downpipe gasket and clamp

Oil feed pipe

Manifold gasket

Manifold nuts

Oil filter

Sump plug

Oil

There is a video on YouTube removing the turbo on a Golf, I will try and find it.

Was looking at it as I'm thinking of getting a hybrid turbo

I had a turbo technics turbo fitted to my car 3 years ago but I must admit I didn't fancy doing it myself so I got a local audi specialist to do it. I got them to change the oil pipes to the turbo aswell which apparently are a right pig to do.

I did mine on a 04 golf gt tdi 18months ago, did mine from underneath the car, lets just say was a lengthy process which I wouldn't like to do again

, but I may have to as this car is got overboost troubles once again, and seeing as how the wife will be gettibg this car once my 06 l&k is on the road the golfs gotta be sorted, as I can do without the wife ringing me on her way to work after its gone into limp in a panic

thank you guys.

I think I counted something like 12 bolts 2 hose clips.

I do wonder how difficult getting the manifold nuts off will be but I guess a liberal spray of WD40 (other release products re available lol) the night before will help seeing as they have been on their for 125k

it will deffo be easier without the EGR gubbins in the way.

I cant decide if I should darkside or turbo technics though. DS are doing the turbo for £575 atm just wish I had the readies right now before they bump the price back up. I reckon all in from them about £700 for the whole lot.

TT want the same but will give back about £300 if I return the old one to them.

decisions decisions.

what does lengthy mean? 2-3 hours? I already have the EGR cooler removed so that should save at least an hour or more. I think I can get the intake pipes off within an hour its just how difficult it will be to get the nuts off the studs of the manifold that worries me incase something goes wrong. as for the rest oil feedpipe  should i believe be easy its only 2 bolts and of course cleanliness id next to godliness with regard to the oil feed pipes.

anyone else got any advice??

Think my fastest time was just over an hour from push in and drive out. With ramp, air tools etc.

wow that's fast but your a mechanic lol.

I'm a competent DIY'er having done some fairly big stuff before.

really doesn't look too hard though, as always I'm sure access is the ongoing issue. oh and those damned massive hose clips lol hate them, why cant they all be the same everywhere on a car.

wow that's fast but your a mechanic lol.

Please, technician ;)

Having the right tools is key. A good set of the cable type snap ring pliers is very useful

When we were replacing the turbo, we had to do it from underneath as there is not enough space to take the turbo out from the top. Maybe there is a way but we didn't see it doable (that was with egr cooler still in place though). It's not that difficult but OSF drive shaft needs to go out (or at least unbolt from differential and move on side) and downpipe needs to be moved back. Then it's pretty straight forward job but I wouldn't do it without proper tools.

Whats the scam with the stud nuts then? the secret to not shearing the studs and removing them cleanly?

so, how do you take the turbo out from the top ?

the bottom i didn't want to remove things, but out the top seems implausible, really frustrating.

I did mine a year ago, I took it out the bottom - that's literally the only way I could see it coming out! Plenty of videos on YouTube.

Thankfully all the nuts came out without bother apart from 2 - one spun the stud out and the other stripped the thread off, but the kit I bought came with a bunch of new studs and it was easy to replace them.

The oil feed can be difficult to undo without breaking it but mine came off fairly easily.  I think the biggest issue I had was getting the exhaust off and on.

i took out the turbo, but the oil feeder pipe had to be cut out, i have bought a braided one now, doing research it turns out it's good practice to change the oil feeder pipe  anyway, i ended up taking the rocker cover off, came right out the top.

thanks for the reply.

right, hi all, i have upgraded and fitted a hybrid turbo, removed all Egr components, blanked off etc, also i cleaned out engine oil sludge from top, flushed out a few times and absolutely cleaned the sump out.

Now, i tried to start the car, it is not happening, I can't make sense of it, i need to be on the road, been working on it roadside for vest part of two months, around other commitments, fuel has quarter tank, i am content it isn't fuel or battery, but that is me, anybody have any wisdom to share ??!!?
