Daytime running lights

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have a 2015 Australian Fabia that came with Sport Premium pack.

Having never had a a car with DRL before, do you or should you have to turn DRL's on every time you drive? I do, although I would have thought these would have been automatic.

Thanks

  • A bit like when "lesser" cars started coming into UK with front fog lights - they "needed" to be switched on at all times!

  • Yes indeed, it is Australia, but that is still a long way. Had the OP lived in Perth in the Kingdom of Queen Nicola then the dealer would have been in central Morocco, or somewhere equally far away.

  • Press the "car" button on the display. Turn of the DRL In "Settings" under "LIGHTS".

DRL's are normally on all of the time the ignition is on. I wasn't aware you could turn them off unless it's different down under.

On my Colour Edition, which is essentially an SE, there is a setting on the infotainment system to turn them off. Otherwise, the default is for them to be on all the time.

I'm in the UK.

Thanks for the replys..

When I turn my ignition on, no lights come on. I have to turn the light switch to two clicks right to turn them on. If I turn the ignition off, and open the door, then I get the lights on alarm.

I might have a look at the infotainment then.

So I checked the infotainment settings and I do not have a DRL access to turn this on or off. The only way to turn the DRLs an and off is to use the light switch . Interested to see if any other Australian owners have the same problem.

I would have thought they'd be on at ignition.

Was the car new from the factory and the sports pack factory fitted? Maybe the car dealership you purchased the car from installed the sports pack (incorrectly?).

Maybe you could give Skoda Australia a call and ask how they should work.

Press the "car" button on the display. Turn of the DRL In "Settings" under "LIGHTS".

Hi OMB,

I can get into settings under lights but I do not have the option for turning on or off DRL.

I have tried the manual setting as per the manual using the indicator etc to no avail either. Pretty frustrating!

Osmosis, as far as I am aware, this was a factory sports pack.

'DRL activate automatically when the engine is started and remain on unless the headlamps are

switched on. They may however remain off in some low speed and stationary situations. In

general all other lights should remain off when the DRL are on but for a limited period some

vehicles may be available which automatically activate the rear position lamps at the same time as the DRL.'

I don't know what Australian law dictates?

I have the bottom of the range 2015 Fabia in QLD ...I can turn off the DRL from the settings. The DRLs dim when the headlights are turned on.

Hi OMB,

I don't get that option.

When I start my car if the light switch is set to off, I have no lights at all on.

The second click to the right means automatic lighting. Nothing is on unless it starts to get dark.

The third click to the right turns my DRLs on but I have to turn it off when I turn the ignition off or the light alarm goes off when I open the door.

The fourth click is headlights and DRL on together.

It is due for a service in 6 weeks, I will ask Skoda then.

Thanks.

The daytime running lights and the side lights use the same LED array, the only difference is that when acting as DRL's they illuminate brighter than they do as side lights.

What you're probably seeing on the third click is the side lights not the DRL's (which is backed up by the fact that you get a "lights-on" warning when you turn the ignition off and try to leave the car).

Ask the dealer why your DRL's aren't working when you take it in for the service and let us know what they say/do.

I have attached some pics which (hopefully) show what your lights should be doing.

Is it possible that DRLs are not mandatory in Aus, but are in EU, and therefore the car is set up differently?

Is it possible that DRLs are not mandatory in Aus, but are in EU, and therefore the car is set up differently?

So where would that leave the poster that lives in Cairns QLD, also Australia, unless Perth WA has different rules?

The DRL's are mandatory in parts of the EU or countries in the EU Zones, but not in the UK.

They are mandatory to be fitted as standard by manufacturers on cars EU type approved after February 2011,

The All New Skoda Fabia 2014/15 was not Type Approved after Feb 2011, it runs on the Type Approval before then,

so fitting DRL's was not mandatory.

The Skoda Australia website states that LED daytime running lights come as standard with the Sport Premium pack, so Skodafabiaperth should have them on his car.

Please also note that DRL's light on 2 power levels. At least the ones fitted in Polish Fabias.

Case - ignition ON.

Light switch:

0 - DRL's are on full power - this is the way you drive your car during the day. In this mode lights are veeeeeery bright.

1 - AUTO - I will skip this.

2 - Positional lights - DRL's are ON BUT their power is maybe like a half or smth. You can notice that it changes. You use this setting when your car is parked.

3 - Low beam lights - H7 bulbs starts ON to drive during the night, but notice, that DRL's also shine BUT in medium power. Same power as in case no 2.

Cheers.

Hey Fabikent, thanks for the photos.

The first photo are the so called DRLs I have when I turn the light switch two clicks to the right. So essentially they are parking lights I have on and not DRLs.

Rum4Mo pretty much the same rules for all states in Austalia.

Will take it up with Skoda in a few weeks.

Thanks all for the input!

Go to the setup again to "lights" - make sure the tick box for DRL is checked to turn on.

So finally got the car in for the 15 k service. Told them (Skoda Service) about the DRLs not working. They told me I didn't have DRLs and couldn't find how to turn them on when they connected the car up!

Went home, checked the specs on the 2015 ca I have and yep, it says I have DRLs. Called Volkswagon customer service, they confirmed I have DRLs, Volkswagon have called the Skoda service department to apparently tell them how to turn them on and now I have to go back!

Frustrating but getting there slowly!

Ah well, the beginning of getting it sorted!

DRL has been compulsary here since 1972. Compulsary on cars build after 2011 in all of EU.

It really helps your fellow motorists detecting you, so why turn it off?

But,

the whole story is that they have been compulsory for manufacturers in the EU on cars EU Type Approved after February 2011. Not, 'Built after 2011'

So not 'required under the EU Legislation' on the All New 3rd Generation Fabias from 2014,

since they are not Type Approved after Feb 2011, they are on Mk2 Fabia Type Approval, maybe even MK1 Type Approval.

So not required to be fitted by Skoda as Standard and not even required to be on in lots of Countries including the UK and Australia.

TBH, I think it is more of a fashion statement here in Australia. It does make sense to have them in though.

A bit like when "lesser" cars started coming into UK with front fog lights - they "needed" to be switched on at all times!
