Noisy Tyres / Conti Sportcontact2

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I've just put my "stock" summer wheel set (18" turbines + continental sportcontact2 225/40 R18 92Y) for the 1st time on my car.
I'm pretty surprised and honestly speaking disappointed with noise level / characteristic :@. My Winter set was based on 16" Nokian wr d4 and in comparison performed quieter (wtf ?!)
Does anyone have similar observations?
It's quite a lot of money, so now I'm only thinking about change, hoping that the noise would decrease and/or I would get used to it...
I'm also considering slightly higher profile (+5..10) and/or 215 instead of 225.
What tyres could you recommend with decent performance / low noise?

I would get 16, or 17 wheels, with goodyear efficient grip.

By changing the tyres on 18 may reduce the noise a bit, but the difference won't be much. Far better going for a smaller wheel with bigger tyre.

Where do you want me to start with continental, there bloody awful tyres. The performance Is not bad but it's the noisest tyre I have ever had.

Also you generally find tyres with a higher loading index and speed rating are generally worse for noise as the thicker sidewall transmits more road noise.

I've the same, L&K so Turbines with the SportContact 2. I can't wait to change them. Loud and bumpy. I think it'll be Goodyear F1's for me.

There's a good few threads on here with similar information in them, people finding the ride bumpy, as so on.

Although I've plenty of thread on them so I can't justify it - I'm presently tempted to change the springs and dampers - it's be about the same price as pricey tyres!  :D

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I do not plan to change rims - they are just too good looking ;)

What I consider doing though is using a 215/50 or 225/45 from a different type.

I did a bit of googleing, but I found no genuine ranking / noise test.

So:

- Goodyear Eagle F1

- ?

Generally sound proofing in the Octavia is poor, but this is to be expected at the price it is for the size of car.

Quite a few members have fitted stick on soundproofing under the boot floor, as its quite a cheap way to improve things.

However all this is useless without some decibel readings before and after.

If you take a few readings at different speeds with a smart phone decibel app, that would prove it if works or not.

I did think on changing the rear dampers but as yet not found it two obvious on what after market companys offer better dampers. Maybe the choice is easier for vrs but not for an se, I just wanted to buy them and fit them myself, but it seams the big companys like bilstin don't have any listed.

I could be wrong but the db readings for tyres don't correlate to cabin noise, I think they refer to noise outside the vehicle, probably for some stupid directive. The thing is there's a tone of ways tyre manufacturers can reduce the noise by having open and closed tread and different tread designs so the noise is directed in the wheel arch. This can reduce the noise outside but does not nessisaraly improve cabin noise. So the best way of choosing a tyre is word of mouth, strange but true.

Also don't believe some tyre test reviews, I think it was autocar did a review a few years ago and the continental did not do to well, the latest test just happened to be on conternentals test track in the US, have a guess what tyre came out in the top 3, the conternental.

Yep sport contact 2 terrible. Fitted nokian winters and silence. Now fitted my 19's with 235/35/19 vredestein vorti and still good. Contis when the wear are rotten. Sounds odd but a 2db increase will double the sound

Not that I'm being padantic but it's +3db doubles sound acustic energy.

Yeah...agree here - synthetic tests do not show the real life.

So far I read that many other ppl complain that those tyres are noisy...so at least this time, that's not my paranoia...you hear me "voices"! :wonder:

That's why I ask for recommendations - especially from someone who went through Contis and changed to X tyre or tested Y and Z tyres...

You're right, but he overall perception of the noise is imo even more important than sheer number. Some frequencies are more annoying/affecting the driver than others, some other may cancel-out or overlap with other parts of background spectrum.

From what I can say Contis are very successful at producing type of noise that drills into my ears regardless of the sonometer reading; personal thing but not too much judging by other ppl complains.

Looking on the bright side - the sportcontact2's are also reported to be rather lousy in the durability department, therefore the problem may solve itself anyway after 1 season :P

I have had continental tyres in the past and they have been awful, I changed to goodyear and they made a big difference, but not on my Octavia. Unfortuntly I'm stuck with these crapy tyres until they wear out as they were skoda factory fit, so I have another 15k left on them.

Any views on Pirellis fitted as standard on my showroom new vrs?
