Fuel consumption

Featured Replies

First i am sorry my english is poor.

i use my felicia (1300cc carburatior) about 20 km daily about,16 of them my speed is 20km in hour because of traffic

1litre make 7.5km,is this normal?

note:i made maintenance carburatior for week ago.

Thank you

  • Don't rely 100% on the charts even the capacity of the tank isn't exactly 42 litres. Every gas station has different inclination, different employee with diferent attitude so there is no quarante

  • 16V sticker on an old 8 valve car, turbo sticker or turbo sound devices on the tail pipe, GTi stickers, plastic discs as rear brake disks etc.

  • Well, there was one Trabant I saw in Germany that had stick-on lettering reading "Trabi Twin Turbo 16 Valve Water Injection", which only just fitted between the rear lights!

The average city consumption of a Skoda Felicia 1.3 on carburettor is 11 km/l (9 l/100 km, 32 mpg).

The consumption can be a little higher if the traffic is really slow. But 7.5 km/l (13.3 l/100 km, 21.2 mpg) is too much.

You say that you did some maintenance job on the carburettor. Please describe exactly what you did and what parts have been replaced. Does the engine run smooth at idle? Or it has a rough idle? Can you post a video with the engine running at idle?

Note: The average city consumption above is true for one passenger in the car, no weight in the boot, no air conditioning, and the engine is running perfectly.

Thank you for reply

i mean with maintenance job(clean every parts with carburettor cleaner ,change gaskets and change spark plugs)

idle is 7 rpm

note:one passenger in the car, no weight in the boot, no air conditioning.

jet number 1 is 95-jet num 2 is120

i am sorry about video quality.

It is hard to tell from that short video if the idle is smooth. It sounds like a Diesel, probably from a bad exhaust.

From my experience, the fuel consumption goes up after cleaning the carburettor ONLY because the new lower gasket is not sealing properly. Any vacuum leak will disturb the fuel consumption.

You must use a vacuum meter. The vacuum at idle should be stable at 500 mmHg (20 inHg).

It is hard to get  vacuum meter, but i will change exhaust pipe because there is stroke in the front of it on  4/5/2016 and tell you the result.

note:exhaust pipe doesn't change before so i think the problem may be solve.

Dear Ricardo ...

i change muffler , acceleration become very good .i will calculate fuel consumption and tell you the result.but about the machine sound someone told me that is come from distributor because it need to lubricating.....is that true???i want your advise.

Thank you at all.

Edited by Romanyshawky

The distributor needs lubrication indeed. New distributors are dry. They need some initial lubrication, otherwise the bearings could seize. See in the illustration below where to put a few drops of oil.

Also make sure there is an equal air gap on all 4 corners of the rotating star.

Dear Ricardo ...

After change muffler acceleration become very good as i said, consumption fuel in high way is better than before (1 liter make 12.5 km)but still in city 1 liter make 7.5km so what can i do else?

note: 1-speed on high way was 120 per hour

2-speed in city was 20 per hour(i use first and second only in gearbox)because of traffic)

It would be nice to tell me first what result had my previous advice...

You had good fuel consumption before cleaning the carburettor. From my experience, here are the main problems:

  1. vacuum leaks under the carburettor. Do a smoke test (!)
  2. bad part
  3. ruptured diaphragm
  4. installation mistakes

Dear Ricardo

1-It is hard to get vacuum meter but i spray around carburitor i think if there is leak the engine will stop(i don't know if this action wrong or true)

2-i don't know what arrow 1 pointing to

3-i found diaphragm gasket not good and i will change it

4-i don't have part 3 in carburitor

5-i found idle jet - primary and fuel mixture adjusting screw with no o- ring.

I want your advice ,buying kit repair or change gasket again??

... i spray around carburitor i think if there is leak the engine will stop(i don't know if this action wrong or true)

It depends what you spray. I use propane gas. Any other spray is useless. If there is a leak under the carburettor, the idle speed will raise.

2-i don't know what arrow 1 pointing to

The arrow is pointing around the bottom gasket. No perfect vacuum, no low fuel consumption.

3-i found diaphragm gasket not good and i will change it

Good.

4-i don't have part 3 in carburitor

Show me some clear photos of your carburettor.

5-i found idle jet - primary and fuel mixture adjusting screw with no o- ring.

That is not very critical.

After change diaphragm and every gaskets

You need to make the video public. Now it is private.

Is right to be gab between first gate and around it?

Edited by Romanyshawky

I understand your concern about the gap between 1st stage and 2nd stage. But this is normal. Why? Because the 2nd stage throttle plate is closed at idle. It opens only after 1st stage throttle plate is more than 50 degrees open.

Looking at video I am confident that the rough idle is because of vacuum leaks. It is not an easy job to seal the bottom gasket. New gaskets are not flat. I've said it many times, you must use a sealant that is high temperature and fuel resistant. I use REINZOSIL made by Victor Reinz company.

i recently rebuilt a used carburator, cleaned it all thoroughly, split it and replaced all gaskets and diaphragms.

Hi all. I was searching at Google for skoda felicia high fuel  consumption and here i am. My Felicia with a full tank had 410km of range. I have made so many things, like change lambda sensor, cleaning the injectors  with a very specific machine at Skoda's official service, and many many more. Recently i have changed the wiring from ECU to the sensors, injectors, etc. As a result now i make 530km with a full tank, but still far enough from range of 600+km that i have see at many sites with technical details and data. 1.3 50kw mpi 2000'. What is an average km range of???  I will upload a video with the engine idling, and if anybody can understand anything from this i will be very happy! 😁

That really depends on how long are your trips and where do you go. These engines inject a lot of extra fuel during warm up, so if you go less than ~10km (especially in a city) it's going to have much lower range than if you're going 50km. Speed is also important, once you go over 90km/h, consumption goes up quite rapidly.

I had around 700km range on average (a bit more, if I tried ecorun), but that was a best case scenario with 40km trips to work with minimum city driving and no highways.

I drive about 10km in a city, and about 70 out of it. At highway max 100km/h, and in other cases 60-70km/h with 4th gear, always accelerating with soft pressure at gas pedal, and not over 3200rpm. Usually i change at 2600rpm at the max torque.

Try to accelerate with gas pedal in about 3/4 - it might sound wrong, but gasoline engines have highest efficiency with open throttle valve - so most efficient way to drive is heavy foot and get to highest gear as fast as possible. Using engine brake on downhills and coasting on straights also helps a lot.

60-70km/h is fast enough for 5th gear, if you don't need to accelerate. At those speeds, immediate consumption should be below 4l/100.
