Mistaken Identity!

Featured Replies

Hi guys, had something interesting happen to me today which has never happened before and is directly related to VRS ownership....

Me and her indoors had been out for the day and were heading home on the awful road from carlisle back to whitehaven. I came off a roundabout and there were a couple of bikes in front of me being a bit spirited but in no way hammering it (otherwise I wouldnt have seen them again lol), and I opened up to follow them through the twisty bits ahead (mainly because I miss my bike!!) once I'd caught up I noticed the second bike (a GSXR6 as it happens!) has slowed down right to the speed limit. Im at least a comfortable good couple of seconds gap behind him but he's constantly in his mirrors. A few hundred metres later and he suddenly pulls in to bit of scraggy land really randomly and lets me pass (can you see whats coming yet?).

Its only as Im passing and I see him eyeballing the car up and down that it dawns on me, he thinks I'm the undercover unit!  :D

He passes me a short while later with wave and a thumbs up and stops at some temporary lights next to his mate (on a rather nice fireblade btw) and theres some exchange between them with a bit of motioning my way. Once through the lights they hared it & vanished over the horizon.

So thats a first. I know cumbria constabulary have at least one VRS but Im not sure what colour it is these days, they were always black but I cant see a white one being out of the question! Might have to start driving in a white shirt and a hi-vis vest!  :p

On another note, this was my longest trip in my VRS since picking it up last month. I was stuck in traffic all the way doing around 50mph and the computer reckoned I averaged 48.6mpg. This was beyond my wildest dreams even for the computer and its poor self discipline! Was a bit less on the way home though ;)

Had that happen with both my MK2FL and this, not so much now it's on the private plate on, but until they clock it then yes often people suddenly slow down.

Had same on mine when I got it. Was on normal reg and in black. Made me laugh

I get it occasionally on the motorway. I have a black one and if I'm on my own I do notice cars in lane 3 that are making progress slow down when in view, then speed up again when past me.

Happens all the time to me in my work focus... Oh wait...

Used to in my Rosso red Mk2 L&K for some reason. But not now in my Rallye Green Vrs estate with a VRS plate. Initially some people do occasionally slow but not for long

Its the massive lettering on the roof that gives it away.

Oh, hang on.....

Thats better than my tractor is doing!!! I'm a bit miffed at the economy - or lack of it, at the moment. Urban I struggle to get 40mpg which I think is crap! I'm just hoping because its still new......

Stopping and starting kills it, as does roundabouts or any other slowing down-ness. My work commute of 9 miles gets me 28mpg currently due to traffic as does knocking about. I've had worse, my t5 c30 managed 19mpg average and 26 on a run.

It will get better over the first 1k miles, mine has. Do me a favour and tempt me here... Which splitter is that???

As a direct comparison, to go from my house to the local town, its about 4 miles & mostly down hill. My old Altea would be registering a ridiculous 70+mpg, driving the Octy in eco mode (so lots of coasting), this morning it went up to 52mpg, but not for long. By the time I got home it was back on 39mpg - Altea would have been on 55 or so.....

Used to suffer the same in the 1980's in my bomb wagon :) Such fun watching people, as soon as they drew alongside and saw "bomb disposal" they would push on at a rate of knots.

Very occasionally notice this in my vRS. More so when I have a passenger in front seat I find specially when us both wearing black jackets.

Many years back I used to trundle up the A1 M in a white Vauxhall Carlton and was always mistaken for an unmarked car.

It can be a bit frustrating

Many moons ago I had a Dark Blue Volvo S80.

I screwed a couple of small rectangular white reflectors on the front grill, suprising how many people pulled over and let me pass

Is that dogging slang?

Wearing a high vis vest or jacket sometimes works also. I wear one to work occasionally

It's happened a couple of times on the M60 to me. Can't say I dislike the "outside lane clearing" qualities I sometimes have.

I friend of mine once bought a Silver Vectra GSI through trade. When he picked it up, we went out for a spin and I was looking round the cabin as you do, looking at the trim and options and I noticed it had heated seats, so I pressed the button.

After ten minutes I wondered why the seats were not heating up, so I pressed the drivers button and asked Steve if his seat was heating up. Turns out, his didnt work either, but what we did notice was that almost every car in front of us, as we drove along lane 2 of the M4, moved inot lane 1 in front of us. It was like Moses parting the sea.

As we came up off the exit slip and into traffic, we noticed that there was a sequential flashing reflected in the car boot in front. Turns out it was an ex-unmarked car (I think these are the ones they use to train response or class 1 drivers), and they had wired the clear flashing lights (not blues) to the heated seat buttons.

I get the same here in Finland - they also use white Skoda's and people slow down when I start following :)

Sometimes happens to me on my journey into work - Quartz Grey hatch - but as soon as people realise they soon shoot off. Its London so quite often have complete idiots on the road and it's nice when they let you past and the traffic slightly clears. ;-)

Happens all the time, even in green as the local police have an unmarked green one round these parts.

A lot of people adjust their driving style when I appear behind them and it's quite amusing.

I parked once on Zadar detour road at late night in middle of novare waiting for time to pass (there was a nice view on the citiy) up on the hill and I was waiting for someone to call me to pick him up on bus stop. Most cars pass fast on that road, only that night they all tought I was undercover cop waiting in abush for speed trap. Literaly all the cars were slowing down!
