Fuel gauge issue

Hi all.

I've just filled up my VRS but noticed when driving home that the gauge is only showing about 2/3 full. Checked how much fuel I added from the receipt and it should be full. Assuming the gauge is at fault, plus the fuel computer is saying I have way less range than normal too so all a bit weird.

Anyone else had anything like this happen?

We have a local petrol station, it's independent and has a less than desirable reputation. Everyone seems to have a mate that managed to fit 12 litres in a 10 litre can....

However, if the quantity seems legit and the pump clicked then it must be a faulty gauge.

This is because the fuel float doesn't go all the way to the top of the tank. If you brim the tank you fill the air spaces above max and the gauge won't read till you use this fuel up.

I don't brim my tank but either way, it's still rubbish. I've never had a car that does this. Apart from a seat Leon.

My Superb mk I did this, you could drive 100 miles before the gauge moved, did 400  miles to half way and then 200 miles from half to empty

 

My Superb mk II is much more linear but I usually only get just over 50 litres in it when nearly empty (it's a 60l tank)

New Esso garage opened near me, filled up but thought I'd used more fuel than what went in. Tried the nozzle in different positions and angles, 4 clicks later thought OK, better on fuel than ever before.

drove off and thought I had a leak, gauge dropped by 2 marks over 30 miles where normally it doesn't budge for 70ish miles.

must have been seriously frothy, receipt for litres added tallyed up with the miles previously covered.

I dont use that garage for diesel any more.

The only problem I have with my fuel gauge is that it goes down too quickly! Crap economy at the moment to the point that if it continues there'll be an email to Skoda UK! Great car, economy is pathetic.........

When I fill my tank, the gauge initially reads full.  Within a couple of miles the gauge drops one graduation, and then takes quite a time to drop further.  Once the gauge has dropped to the halfway mark it seems to drop really quickly.  I've never found fuel gauges to be particularly accurate and they seem to vary from car to car.  I just get used to how mine behaves.

Every car I've ever owned works like this.

Unless the float mechanism goes up to the filler cap theres no way to accomodate for the fuel in the fillter neck.

I have between 75-100km from this fuel before the fuel needle starts to move.

 

Afterwards I really like the VW system because it seems very linear afterwards.

Every major tick line gives 100km with a total range of 875-900 from each tank.

i have also found the guage to be pretty poor. red waring light turns on at about 10-12 litres left in tank and when the guage hits almost dead zero there's about 5-8 litres still left. Pretty poor for when planning long distance journys. i wish i could adjust the tank level calibration somehow.

If you change your display options to show Litre/100 or km/litre and the display consumption is reasonably accurate to real consumption (fairly easy to check if you have a consistent refill procedure) then ignore what the fuel gauge shows and go by distance travelled and consumption achieved since last refill to work out real remaining fuel levels.

On a long trip you are going to get over 50mpg (5.6L/100) with your 1.6CRD, unless you are related to TWMNA (I love his work really).

Wondered why I can only get around 47 ltrs in my 55 ltr tank when warning light comes on!! Are all models the same? Mines a Scout.

Octavia tank size and warning lights are regular forum subjects that should be in a sticky.

The standard 50 litre tank can hold at least 55 litres if filled to a point where you can just see the fuel at bottom of the filler tube.

The scout and 4wd versions have 55 litre tanks but I expect they also have the 5 litre cushion.

The warning light on the petrol versions are usually relevant to the tank size ( when mine comes on I get 49 litres in).

There have been many complaints from diesel owners that the warning light comes on way to early so as little as 40 litres can be put in. It appears to be a feature on the diesels to reduce the possibility of running dry which must cause issues(?).

Hello Gerrycan, thanks for your info on planning longer distances. Your suggestion seems a more relaxing approach then trying to second guess the non linear fuel guage :thumbup:

Seems like they might have fuel temperature issues when there is a low volume circulating in the fuel system and maybe also re-pressure issues when trying to re-start an engine from run dry.

 

Now i just need to find a seating position which doesn't destroy my lower back for my trip from London to Munich at the end of the month :| .

The 55L tank of the ordinary mk2 apparently could hold 64L according to one report.

I think it would be safe to assume you have at least 10L left in the tank when your light comes on, but I'd carry a small Jerrycan of fuel if your are going to test my theory.
