1.6 TDI and the Octavia

Featured Replies

How is this engine in the Octavia? I'm thinking about replacing my toledo with an octavia elegance but the car I've found and like is the 1.6 same as my toledo. In the toledo it's nippy, on the test drive I felt the octavia lacked the same nippiness the toledo has, so I thought I'd ask owners and if fellow taxi drivers have the engine in the octavia how it is laden with passengers and suit cases for airport runs? Fuel economy as well, my toledo does low 40s around town which is rubbish really considering my old company one done 50+ easily!

I have the 1.6tdi Estate on 11 plate... The engine pulls you along adequately but it isn't going to win any land speed records. I recently did a long trip up north 400+ miles each way, 3 adults, baby and a stack of luggage. No problems with pulling all that and returned around 57 mpg. The highest mpg I've experienced is early 60s, the worst around 50 mpg. Great motors, all in all.

Yeah it's comfortable to drive but I love my toledo, only reason I need to change is I have trouble with my right knee, at 6ft 3 as well I'm cramped which isn't helping my knee. It wasn't bad but over the last couple of months I have been almost crying every night with the pain! Soon as it's stretched a bit it's fine, just the angle and closeness to the wheel. In the octavia my seat where I'm comfortable people can still get in and out behind me.

Does anyone else have any experience of this combination? Can't believe I've had one reply from what is/was a busy forum!

I have the Octavia 1.6 tdi SE L, which used to be called the Elegance in the UK.  It's two months old and covered just over 1000 miles.  The engine is quite lively enough for urban use and open road cruising.  The engine has loads of low down torque and will pull cleanly from about 1200 rpm.   Being only a 5 speed box it will pull up hills easily in 5th gear.  The lack of a 6th gear is no great problem - at 70 mph the engine is only turning at about 2000 rpm.

Round town, I'm regularly getting over 50 mpg,  On a decent run, high 60s/low 70s is easily obtainable provided you are gentle with the accelerator.

My previous car was a VW Jetta 1.6 tdi Bluemotion, which had the Euro 5 version of the same engine.  Performance and economy was very similar.  If anything, the Octavia, being a little bit lighter gives slightly better performance and economy than the Jetta did.

The car's real strength is as a relaxed motorway cruiser.  Set the cruise control at 70 mph and it will hold the speed all day, up hill and down dale.

Only main difference I've noticed between the toledo and octavia is the power delivery, the power delivery of the octavia is a lot smoother whereas the toledo chucks the power out.

I've left a deposit on an octavia elegance, 15 plate 13k on the clock in grey.

My 1.6 TDI replaced my old 1.9 TDI Octavia, and I have been really pleased with it. It feels more refined than the old car and almost more 'petrol like' if that makes sense in terms of responsiveness.

I had 5 people in my car today and it wasn't an issue at all. The car seemed to ride more smoothly with a load on board too, which is my only slight gripe with the car - poor ride quality.

I regularly touch 60+ mpg on my run to work which is excellent. I'm sure you will be pleased.

My car has had an issue with some low speed harshness in the transmission. It has been a bit of a saga, which resulted in a new gearbox being fitted. Although much improved, I can still hear this harshness when I tickle the throttle at low speeds (1st and 2nd), almost like a release bearing noise. I managed to test drive another 1.6TDI last week so I could compare and see if it was still an issue with my car... the other Octavia made exactly the same noise which I was pleased about.  I haven't found any other reports of this on the forum, so it may be I am just over fussy! I would be interested to hear if you experience this with your new car when it arrives.

We don't get SEAT in Australia but googling the Toledo specs suggest it is a lot lighter and better performing on the same engine than the Octavia?

The octavia does feel a bit slower but that's be expected as the power delivery isn't the same, it's smoother on power delivery than the toledo I noticed on the test drive of one, ride quality is better than the toledo as well. Never noticed any harshness but will watch it if/when I get it. Hopefully get it on Tuesday, will submit the taxi plate transfer docs on Monday and hopefully have it tested and operating on Wednesday.

Ive had a 1.6 4x4 Estate since December, I was told the extra weight of the 4x4 system would really blunt the performance but its perfectly fine and to me doesnt feel any slower than my previous Renault which allegedly had 130BHP as opposed to the Octys 110. One thing that I would mention is that I ordered my car with the std 16" wheels as a couple of reviews I read mentioned the 17" option wasnt as composed on badly maintained roads, they were right, I had a demo car with 17" wheels and although they may look a bit flasher the ride is definitely affected

I have had the 1.6TDI DSG for over an year now and I am quite happy with it. I am not a pedal-to-metal type of driver and for me the 1.6 TDI is adequate in terms of power and performance. I make frequent short trips and so the MPG was awful during the winter (less than 30mpg) but with rising temperatures, it is now around 46mpg for a tankful.

I've had a 1.6tdi SE for year and half 23k miles, commutes 70 odd miles a day and does mid 60s mpg. (mid 70s since the 50 limit on the M6). Acceleration is good in the right gear.

Deposit left and deal put through so if everything goes to plan I should have it by next week.

I'm sure you wont find it a problem.

I normally drive a vRS (184ps 2L) and was given an Octavia diesel hirecar.

I drove 100km before I realised it was a 1.6 rather than the 2L 150PS.

Admittedly I was alone without any luggage but it was a very nice combination & a 10mpg improvement on my vRS for similar driving conditions.
