Continental tyres

Featured Replies

Having owned a seat fr and from being use to the noise of the Bridgestone tyres, I am most annoyed by the road noise on my new vrs. The continental contact 2 must be the cheapest tyres as the road noise is horrendous. I ve replaced the rears after 400 miles to Goodyear and they sound much better but the fronts need replacing too. Has anyone else had this issue as skoda need to sort it and either fit better tyres in the factory.

I ve written to the dealership but don't hold my breathe on getting a refund of two tyres so far!! As I paid for some of the car on credit card I may claim on section 75 for them to do something about it

Is this a wind-up? All manufacturers source tyres from where they can. One Octy may have Continentals, the next off the line may have Good-Years.

As for claiming money back for noisy tyres; good luck with that. Next you'll be saying the wiper blades squeak as they aren't Bosch ones  :D

The Contininentals are reasonable quality tyres from a reputable manufacturer and not "cheap" per se. That they are noiser is a characteristic of the tyre and one you can either live with or resolve by replacing.

I have the same complaint with the Pirelli Zeros on my VRS and will be replacing with Goodyear or Michelin when I can...though I will get some use from them first!

You won't get anything from the dealer ( unless they are remarkably kind! ) nor should they owe you anything. They have no obligation or commitment to ensure the OEM tyres fall below a certain DB level for road noise and they are entirely fit-for-purpose as far as the performance, handing and safety are concerned which is what does matter.

If they bug you that much, I suggest you continue to replace them and put the Continentals on eBay to recoup some of the cost!

?

Ebay?

What about the For Sale section in a Car Enthusiasts forum, like say Briskoda!

Ok - "eBay or online selling and community platform of your choice" then!

:p

Conti Sport Contact 2 are not the best or quitest but then again the vRS isn't exactly a Merc either. If you wanted a quiter ride you should've got a L&K or a bigger car.

Yeah, I've got L&K and Contis are the loudest boots I have ever had on car.

Mk3 Octavia isn't a quiet car really no matter the tyres on it.....

I put Hankook Venus V12 Evo 2's on mine...drives better and a bit quieter but not quiet.

Conti SC2's are known for being noisier, but they certainly aren't cheap. If you really don't like them then buy more and fit them. Alternatively put up with it until they're worn and worry about more important things.

Skoda certainly won't refund them and you'd be cheeky to expect them to; why should they? I imagine they source tyres of a certain 'quality' from whomever can supply them cheapest at the time. Youre (we're) lucky their chosen 'quality' is premium brands. They could quite easily and legitimately provide their new cars with budget tyres that would cost them far far less, but likely be worse to drive on and have even more road noise.

Skoda owners moan about everything..lol

They won't take long to wear so don't worry. Do t expect anything from the dealer though.

This is quite true.

Its an amazing car for the money but you also realise where your extra 10k goes when you buy a Passat.

The Conti CS2s are an old tyre. To the public you can buy the CS5 which I'm sure is quite different.

I have the CS2s on my vRS & am satisfied with how quiet they are on the vRS but then we have great roads in Switzerland unlike the UK.

Unless you can show that there's something really wrong with the tyre I'm pretty sure you have no chance of getting the dealer to pay for them.

Did you test drive an Octavia before you bought it?

This is quite true.

In my case that was +1k € approximately.

But I guess that's not the point - you would still get most of the similar problems to ones from octy plus few more from a different bag.

If it makes you happier then the Bridgestone potenza that came on my vrs are also very noisy.

I'm going to experiment with some sound deadening when I get back from the Falklands in 4 months time.

.... but you also realise where your extra 10k goes when you buy a Passat.

Provided you can stay awake long enough :p

I ve also added sound proofing to the rear of the car. I m going to take a video and upload it as it drones between 40 to 80 mph and it's unbearable, the dealer called me today and may be replacing the tyres if found to be faulty. If not I ll be going back to my seat under the 30 day guarantee of buying a used approved vehicle.

Surely it must be something other than just the tyres.

Replaced rear tyres and added sound deadening and now returning the car within 30 days,

How many miles has this car done,

& have Dealership employees been out in the car to see what the issue is with it?

It sounds like your problem is not the tyres but "booming" in the cabin:

You should read this thread:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/294540-low-frequency-boom-in-cabin/

It is known since the launch of the O3 with a few attempts to fix it by different dealerships but it seems there is still no "acceptance" that this is a real issue from Skoda & also no "definite" solution to the problem either.

I think this issue is definately grounds to reject your car if you can.

There are many in this thread who just sold the car because Skoda couldnt do anything to fix it.

I'm not sure that 'many' have rejected their car on the grounds on booming/pressure but there have definitely been instances.

I think it would be fair to say that more have actually found various ways to improve the initial reported problem(s).

To the OP; have your passengers confirmed your impressions?

It could be the tyres, it could even be just one tyre based on my experience with my space saver spare.

From the dealers perspective that would be the easiest potential source of your problem to eliminate with a simple trial transfer of tyres from one of their other cars.

I know that this sounds stupid but have you checked your tyre pressures? The dealers are notorious for sending them out under or, more often, well over inflated

Bridgestone Potenza S001 on my L&K - they seem perfectly fine.

When the time comes they will be replaced with Hankook Ventus V12 Evos

I replaced my Goodyears & Contis with Michelin Cross Climates and found them much quieter on all surfaces.
