Roof Box

Ok never owned one but about to buy one, I have decided I am going to buy Thule Wing Bar edge rails as recommended on another thread and as I personally believe the look the best on the car.

I am also looking at a Thule box and I am torn between the below, the reason for the purchace is I go camping and require even more room than the Superb Estate Already has.

I have the Excellence XT on mine. Looks very similar to the 'Motion XL' so could be the name for the newer versions.

FelisBengalensis  Yes Very nice Box In fairness I would like that however It's twice as much as the Motion XL, slightly wider and longer, also looks twice as expensive excellence instead of what i will be getting good enough for the job, ha ha, as a matter of interest which bars do you have.

We have this one which we have used on previous cars and will go on the Superb once it arrives.

Its a Kamei 510 and is huuuuuge. Opens both sides so no need to stretch over to get stuff in. Also wont lock without the keys being in it so no chance of locking your keys away by accident.

It's about 540 litres so it's almost the same storage as the hatch boot again. I think I bought it new for about £200 from Go Outdoors, but I have a feeling it was on special offer, although still a lot cheaper than the big well-known brands. And it's served us well on several family camping trips, I'd recommend it.

Oh your a good man Felisbengalensis,  just ordered those today and was worried the were going to be too low, I got the black ones but otherwise the same think they look loads better than any others. I also ordered the Thule Motion 800 XL box as well so should have them in 4-5 days, thanks for posting the pics.

Great pics and excellent timing.  I am just looking at a Hapro Traxer 5.6 roofbox from www.roofbox.co.uk, and was needing to remember to measure the roof this weekend.  The box is 177cm long and I was concerned it would be overlapping the screen, but by the looks of yours which is 205cm long it will fit with no problems on my hatchback.

I thought mine may overhang the screen but thankfully it clears the little antenna thing by about 1.5 inches, so it is positioned as far back as I could allowing 3" from a fully open tail gate, really happy with it. I also looked at roofbox.co.uk and bought one of their DOGBAGS, which is great for our lab when we get to the camp site, his own little tent, inside our tent, for when we go to bed. But for the roof box and bars I went with roofrack.co.uk two very similarlynamed companies.

Hi Looking at a new roof box for my superb3 - as the one i have is an old grey massive thing and about as wind resistant as a brick

i bought a set of the genuine skoda roof bars when i got the car its a hatch by the way

 

so want a black streamlined roof box to match the car - actually like the look of the thule motion sport

just curious how good the 'powerclick' system is that these roof boxes have as i would prefer using something like this as opposed to using a U bolt type system which is a bit more permanent & time consuming.

Having never owned a roof box, until this week I was pleased to see the way it attaches by the Powerclick system to the bars. All I can say is they slide backwards and forwards to meet where your bars are and then tighten in a few turns so that the box is very secure. I am very impressed by the system. In fact today I have cleared room in my garage and removed the box, it is as simple as could be, undo the 4 powerclick things lift off and store. As for the Thule box mine is the XL so is 205cm  long, the motion 200 which is 175 cm may be better for the hatch back. I'm sure you would be happy with it. Both the XL and 200 are rated for 75KG and have been tested in crash situations with a full load so the Powerclick system must hold them on OK.

I was looking at the Thule Motion 200 but found the Hapro Traxer 5.6 which looks pretty much the same and yet on roofbox.co.uk is about £150 cheaper.  Speaking to some friends who are Dutch Hapro is a well known name in Holland (they are built near Rotterdam apparently).

Knew I had seen it somewhere, crash test video on thule cycle rack and top box, So the power click system certainly holds things together.

Ok - Having spoken to Roof box co uk & doing some measuring up - went for a Hapro box but not the 

traxer 5.6 ..went for the traxer 6.6 in anthracite ....Gloss Black was too big a jump in price for my liking

 

Box ordered on next day delivery received today

 

Literally Fitted in Minutes - The Claw type premium fit clamps are excellent and easy to use and gripped the Skoda roof bars really well

(i did buy the T channel adaptors just in case) 

 

Really Happy with my choice now size wise - as you can see in the pics - nice and central and no fouling the hatch or massive windscreen overhang

Plus i have plenty of room at the side of it for my bike rack

Car height on its own 1468mm

My bars with the box add another 500mm

Obviously these are with car unladen

Your bars may be lower than mine

Box itself is 420mm

Hope this helps

I did notice on roof box Co UK that they have the 'inno lowdown ' models which are only 250mm in height but you then loose capacity
