Second car......how much for insurance!

Featured Replies

Been thinking/looking for a second car (nothing new to me as this is the first time in about 10 years).

Two reasons, one for my other half to learn to drive (although she has a licence it's not valid in the UK), she's on my Octavia but it's an auto and we thought she really needs to practice on a manual. The other for me to use to work instead of the Octavia, as I work in a bit of a rough area and it's already had a few "accidents".

Saw a Felicia on a facebook group for a cheap price (1.9SDi) and thought ok it's worth a punt. That was until I got the insurance quote. Nearly 5 times the purchase price! Which, I may add, is more than my Octavia, with mods and the other half on with a provisional driving licence!

No wonder so many people are un-insured!

So my point of my post, any other suggestions for something that's cheap to run (fuel wise, insurance and purchase price).

Thanks

Where is your OT's licence from? It may be possible for her to obtain a UK licence without having to pass a test, and to get credit for driving experience from some insurers.

My insurers mirrored my no claims on the second Yeti, can they not do the same for you on your second car?

You may find the attached link useful.

It allows you to identify cars by insurance group rating, starting at one and going up to group 50.

Good luck

Try Aviva I use them for multi car policy and got my £13000 Superb insured as a 3rd car for less than £200

Sadly, she cannot. At least everything I've checked via the DVLA she has to get a UK licence.

It's worth a try, however, the quote in question was with full NCB :(

Might it be the age of the car?

i know theres rumours that some insurers over here are going to introduce a vehicle age limit, over which they will charge extra or may refuse to quote on the basis that its old therfore less safe In an accident..

i have two insured with direct line £163 for a 2002 Forester (5000m) and a new Astra Elite 150 Turbo for £217 for 15000m both fully comp with Direct line. The astra with 9yrs ncb the Forester with none. Both cover for work use too. I am the sole driver on both.

This is going to sound crackers, but do a quote with her as main driver on a provisional, and you as named.

But you're not insuring your car your insuring the third party you may hit. She is probably considered a high risk which is why the premiums are high. You'll be surprised at some of the cars that are cheap to insure that you wouldn't expect.

My old Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI SE (2001) was cheap to insure for me with No NCBs

I get what you mean, and yes you are correct the risk factor is her, but then again she is on my Octavia, yet less powerful, un modified and cheaper cars are more expensive to insure, which to me is just crazy!!

I have also read this...and makes sense as a newer, quicker more costly car is actually cheaper.

For example a Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost works out about £180 less a year than a £100 Felicia!!
