THINGS MISSING or not operating......

Featured Replies

Couple of small issues. This Mirror link does not seem to recognize my Samsung S6 phone?  Should there have been a warning triangle , first aid kit and Fire extinguisher in the car? AND is there available updates for the sat nav maps? This does not recognise my house number but does for next door?? House been here 20 years.

Thanks in advance.

Re Mirrorlink, make sure you are using the correct cable, it needs to be able to transfer data and not be for just charging.

I have an S6 and you can download Android Auto which I did and it worked fine, HOWEVER there are far to few apps that work with it and in fairness it is a waste of time in my opinion. The phone connects by blue tooth anyway and you get full contact lists etc and can play music via bluetooth if you wish, so why connect it to a system which needs far more development. As for the Sat Nav. update I believe there is one due next month some time it will be on the Skoda site update somewhere indeed here

No. Advisable but not legally required in UK and therefore not included in the vehicle UK specifications.

Apart from anything else don't put your house address as HOME.

Android Auto is actually very good. I have noticed that it is a little finicky with my galaxy S6 too. Usually just disconnecting and reconnecting works fine. I use the sat nav, as it integrates with my Google search history really well. Also things like Audible and Google Play Music are excellent. Google just announced a raft of updates for Android Auto too which will probably be baked into the next VW Group MIB platform.

If Android Auto is like Apple Car Play - which I think it is - the smartphone is what generates the content. The head unit is merely a 'dumb' screen that repeats what the smartphone is producing. Any updates will work with any compatible head unit.

Android Auto is going to have Waze built in with an upcoming update.

Thank you very much for the responses, appreciated indeed.

Current Android Auto works pretty much the same as Car Play, future iterations are going to be built into the head units of some cars (no manufacturers were mentioned) . Qualcom have announced two new processors specifically for head units to run Android Auto which would be great now cars are coming with modems built in.

I guess your preference will come down to which ecosystem you're tied into.

install some Škoda app, others can't be seen cause screen resolution(maybe)

only for thous who can install it, Android Auto is country dependent

I've just noticed another thing. What is the point in W-LAN? /Wi-Fi? Internet is not fitted to the car..................is it ?   I really need to  read the manuals provided...too busy though.

Now Android Auto does not work...not a very clever idea from Skoda.

The Columbus head unit can create a wifi hotspot so others in the car can potentially share your data connection. I think it currently only works with phones that support rSAP.

You can opt for the 'Premium Wlan' on the Superb. This adds a 3G/4G SIM card slot to the glovebox so you can have a wifi connection independent of any smartphone.

I sincerely hope Apple CarPlay will have some improvements with iOS 10 later this year. The current Iteration of CarPlay is a bit....Meh.

The Music app is ok as it's easy to navigate songs, albums, artists etc. But the Apple Maps app is pretty crap IMO. Android Auto has a massive advantage with Google Maps and the upcoming Waze app which is a great croudsource for real time traffic.

I can't get the hotspot to work....I'm giving up on these gimmicks...none of them work like smartlink, Android auto etc  they just dont work.

To me a lot of the technology on cars is just for the sake of it.....supposed to be a car, not an office!!.....bring back contact breakers/ wind down windows and 4 star I say!!! haha

Ensure you have a decent quality lead to minimise the chances of any problems arising. It is suggested to try the lead that comes with the phone. There are lots of reports on the interwebs of AA not working with generic cables which suggests it's quite picky.

Have you selected Android Auto as the preferred device connection? it should be automatic but might be worth checking. It's in the Mirrorlink settings and can be selected between AndroidAuto, Apple CarPlay and Mirrolink.

Apparently, AndroidAuto uses the USB connection for charging and data transfer, but also uses Bluetooth for phone call side of things.

There are also suggestions that putting the phone into USB debug mode can fix the problem. I don't know much about that as i'm an iPhone user!

I cannot select Android Auto its shaded out. I also cannot tick the box next to it..I'll keep reading the manual, might get there eventually. I'm a bit hacked off to be truthful....a Sat nav that does not have a house number on it thats been there for 20 years....I'll complain to Skoda tomorrow.

I had issues with android auto, but following an older post on this forum, I discovered that the Columbus unit was set to manual time setting, it needs to be GPS updated. I don't know why, but after I switched to GPS it worked. Have you checked if there is an update to android auto on your phone?

Edited by fletchem

I think it's been mentioned before but there is a map update due out in June. Sounds like an error in the database. Skoda will most likely blame the mapping company which I believe is still Navteq which are now under the 'Here' brand since being taken over by Nokia who subsequently sold it to VW-Audi, BMW and Daimler.

You can actually sign up and change the map yourself: https://mapcreator.here.com/mapcreator/31.786427582245,44.322329,3,0,0

It might be quicker than going round in circles with Skoda.

If it's done quickly enough, it might get pushed to the next update due out next month.

Latest version.......I'll try the GPS idea

You can side load it... Go to APKMirror. Not saying that it IS going to work, but you can at least try.

The latest info about Android Auto is that it will support wifi (called wifi projection). So given that the S3 has wifi capability, even without the Premium Wlan option, I'm hoping that the phone/car can connect in this method and be wireless.

have tried install manually AndroidAuto_1.6.209040.apk, it's stopping uncomplete :(

there is instruction, but doesn't look worth it - currently the best navigation for me is Samsung Note4 with Waze on the dashboard

- preparations:
- make proper backup (nandroid backup or kies backup or samsung smart switch - recommended
- remove sim-card

1. upgrade galaxy s5 mini to lolipop 5.1.1 if you dont have stock 5.1.1fw
Note: need to be stock ROM, as custom rom has build dpi-change mode, which stops using android auto.
have tried CM11,CM12, none is working (right now), partial success with custom roms without baked dpi-change...But lot of debugging and ugly coding. Avoid! Mirrorlink is and will never work on SG5Mini!

I have upgraded my SG5mini using oDIN 3.10 with following firmware:

G800FXXU1AOG2_G800FOXX1AOG1_ORX.zip - available at sammobile

If you have issues with upgrade, try to use PIF file and repartitioning in first stage, then in second stage install PDA rom. Check internet and google!
After proper upgrade, first start your galaxy s5 mini, don't enter anything -> skip all possible setups, avoid creating gmail account/samsung account now (will be handled later). If you have already fw with 5.1.1, do factory reset (and backup data before this!)

2. connect mobile with PC via USB cable and upload to mobile applications FakeGPS and VyprVPN. Search APKmirror or google for apk.

-com.lexa.fakegps.apk
-VyprVpn-2.13.0.5839.apk or higher

before install enable mock mode (in developer options) and enable install from untrusted sources.
Install both applications using file browser (bundled in mobile)

3. connect to your WIFI network
4. start vyprVPN and connect to US region, what ever server is available. Key icon will appear on status bar.
VyprVPN registration is free for first 500mb data, which is sufficient.
5. start fakeGPS and have position set to US. run google maps and check if you are in US. If not, dont continue.
6. create google account based in US. Alternatively you can precreate this using your home PC with US proxy. Make
sure, that maps.google.com navigate you to US!
7. check on mobile that maps.google.com navigate to US! If not, don't continue
8. connect mobile to your US gmail account
9. Go Google PlayStore-> search for Android Auto and install. As you are in US region, application is visible and
installable. If you dont see application, you are not in US region and you need to recheck steps from beginning. I
recommend to make factory reset of mobile and check if VPN is working!

Known problems:
- Android Auto is not in Google Apps Store - you are not in US region. Clear all cache (Android Auto, Google PlayStore, check VPN, and retry.
- This item isn't available in this country - invalid region-non US. Factory reset and rework. Android Auto + ontop apps are eligible only for US.

10. go to your car, wifi must be available and your mobile need to be connected via VyprVPN to US.
11. Car->Settings->Factory Reset->Fullink
12. Mobile->enable bluetooth and have mobile paired with car, allow data transfer on car and on mobile. Wait a
minute. Android Auto is not working yet without bluetooth enabled, but there are portions of code that Android Auto will work over wifi soon!
13. Mobile->Settings->Applications->Applications Manager->on tab installed you will see Android Auto.
Go to tab All->Google Playstore->Clear Data.
14. Car->Fullink-> set to Android Auto go to Devices, you will see empty list
15. On mobile press the Home button for 3seconds -> you will see all apps running, remove all from right to have clear memory!
16. connect mobile with usb cable to car, bluetooth needs to be always on
17. on devices list you will see "Samsung Android" new device
18. Click to connect, you will see new screen on mobile (android Auto) If not, disconnect cable, re-connect, clear cache memory in android auto apps, google play store apps or restart mobile.

This is common, that Android Auto will not start automatically. Recomended is to clear cache of Android auto, Google PlayStore and kill all Android Auto apps using task bar (home button pressed). Sometimes this takes 10 times to launch, as AA is very buggy.
17. when you see Android auto application, click on install and allow all applications to download. It will be Google text-to-speach, Google Maps, Google Music. This will be special apps approved with Android Auto, so you need to be within wifi connection and allow 10 minuts to download. Approve all dialogs. Registration to Google Music is not mandatory.
18. finally Android auto will start and you will see your screen on head unit
19. disable google automatic updates -> Google Playstore->Settings->Disable automatic updates
20. disconnect from US google account
21. connect to your original google account
22. restore your backup & enter sim-card
