Air filters

Featured Replies

So I'm looking at either a KN or Pipercross for my VRS tdi, are they equally as good?

Both state "performance gains" however I am sceptical, obviously more air intake etc would be positive, but would it actually be a noticeable increase?

Thanks in advance

Will make absolutely no difference on a standard car other than reducing the quality of filtration. If you want more power spend it on a remap which will provide significant gains even with a standard filter

Performance - I guess it's a one big marketing turd. In turbocharged engine there is no way that filter alone would change anything. Just like with 3" exhaust - alone makes no sense.

I was actually considering both filters but just to get a bit more throaty sound. In general pipercross seems a bit better in terms of filatration, but both have rather mixed reviews in terms of results. Some ppl say they use it years long with good effects, but some say it's potentially harmful to the machine. More issues (flow meter poisoning) I've seen reported on K&N.

All in all - I've dropped the idea. Paper filters (oem-like) have much greater surface area (see the shape), so if the KN/piper have lower and provide more throughput at the same time, that must mean that lower higher porosity is used / less filtration. Thus both need to be assisted with oil coat, that needs maintenance and may itself cause problems.

A question here - does anyone know a paper filter that would have a greater surface? Maybe that would be the best of 2 worlds...

PS: I have a K&N on my bike...maybe I should put oem one back ;)

Same; was just wondering whether they were worth their pound of flesh.

Not looking at getting a remap done as I'm happy with the performance of the car.

You will still notice a gain with a proper intake and cat-back exhaust - a panel filter is negligible, but a proper kit will help.

I've always sworn by K&N - when I ran my S2000 it made 256bhp on a dyno with a K&N typhoon kit and cat-back system - made 241 standard, so 15 up!

Vtec engines love breathing mods, but so should a turbo engine too.

That is for sure true, but S2000 has one of best free breathing engines. If you have turbo, the filter effect is rather negligible; air is not sucked in by engine motion but pumped at high rate by compressor. The pressure drop improvement from better intake is thus giving a very small contribution to amount of air coming in in comparison with air rate from turbine. Moreover the whole thing is constantly controlled by ecu, thus all configuration changes are being validated/compensated by electronics.

You need to understand the fundamental differences between how diesel and petrol engines work. Before wasting your money.

won't make a blind bit of difference other than to your wallet

RAM AIR sell decent aftermarket filters on ebay, they are very well priced and will reduce the weight of your wallet significantly enough to make the car slightly faster (I jest).

I would most likely think a diesel will have no performance gains because they are not bothered as much about air as a petrol car... It'll maybe spool up a bit quicker and make it fee a bit more responsive but that'll be it..

You have to take into account that once upon a time a K&N/Pipercross/Whoever filter was fitted to a vehicle and it made more power so they can legitimately claim that on all their advertising.

It just means that the original vehicle had a horrendously restrictive air filter as standard.

Modern filters are good for flowing 25-30% more air than the engine requires so even with a stage 1 remap you do not need to change your OEM filter.
