Uneven tyre wear Octy VRS

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Been hanging round this forum for ages and usually found the answer to most questions I wanted the answer for, and loads I didn't know I yet did.

Anyway got new front tyres for my MY15 Octy VRS TDI today, 11,000 miles in . The wear on the tyres seems to be very odd and I don't know a great deal about this kinda things so I was wondering if someone could help? Rear tyres are spot on, both 5mm tread depth across the tyre perfectly even, whereas the fronts were between 4mm and 2mm. The offside was 4mm on the outside 2mm on both the centre and the inside and the nearside was exactly the same, not mirrored, as in 4mm on the inside 2 in the centre and 2 on the outside.

Now for my actual dilemma this is the first time I've had any work done on the tyres and save for knocking a few kerbs and the like, they should be how they came out the factory. I'm very happy with that, I've never had a problem with the way the car handles it drives in a perfect straight line; braking and accelerating (ignoring the odd wheelspin/ ASR incident ofc.  :D ) and is absolutely brilliant. Which indicates to me that the car is set up fine and having a number of cars in the past with poorly balanced wheels, tracking etc makes me very very reluctant to do anything with it. Is this a problem for other VRS drivers? Should I just accept uneven wear?

P.s If it makes any difference I replaced the old tyres like for like Bridgestone Potenza s001 18"

You would expect that the car arrives perfectly tracked from the factory, but that's not always the case. Plus, there are loads of factors that can alter your tracking besides hitting kerbs and bumps etc. I would say have a proper Hunter wheel alignment done at a local Kwick Fit (most likely around £65) and they will give you a report to see if it is out or not.

Given the fact you've worn through a set of front tyres in 11,000 miles either says you're driving it very hard, or there is an issue with your wheel alignment.

I'm nearly 14,000 miles in and have 5mm remaining on my front tyres - same tyres too Bridgestone Potenza S001 225/40/18.

Hi. A key point with tyre wear is tyre pressure, how often do you check them? Do you corner hard, could explain the outer edges wearing first.

Mine is a July 15 build and it did the exact same. Fronts were replaced at just under 3mm on the outside at 19k km and the inside had 4.5mm left.

Also...they managed to damage a wheel in the process but that's beside the point and ongoing...

The car has TPMS. If pressures deviated between tyres there would have been a warning. It is possible that all tyres were too high or too low, but then you would expect even(ish) wear unless the geometry is out.

Hi guys thanks for all the replies.

I do tend drive in a spirited fashion Vtec to Vrs, I'm lucky enough to drive a lot at night and sometimes early morning on usually quiet roads. I'm not overly surprised they're worn out and from reading around they aren't the best wearing tyre.

How do you still have so much tread?!?

I've regularly checked the tyre pressures and kept at recommended levels. Well I did until the tpms pinged, I had a very slow puncture -2 psi every 1000 miles or so. I must say the tpms is very good I didn't think it would be that accurate.

EoinM mines a July build too, did you find any actually difference when driving? As I said above mine seems spot on generally but tread wear seems to be the only problem. Did you just leave yours?

I think probably because most of my driving is done on a motorway, I've had my alignment done since I got the car (bloody pot holes), and I don't go around corners like a loon...but then again you wouldn't with an L&K!

I do have a DTUK tuning box fitted though, but rarely go for it from a start, so don't tear the tyres to shreds that way.

I didn't spot anything untoward to be honest, everything else felt as it should. I'm picky about my wheel alignment and I had it checked after the tyres were swapped by a place I trust and it was pretty close to what they had on the hunter that it didn't need anything apparently. I take a couple of roundabouts hard to and from work but apart from that it's not driven hard.

I do think when I got the car first the pressures may have been a little low from the factory and I know it was PDI'd quickly for me and I asked them to not do things and all that so that may have been it. I put a set of Eagle F1s on it so I'll keep an eye on those for now.

Eagle F1's are a good tyre, but very soft compound, so not the best for wear. I remember having my MK1 Fabia vRS (which was remapped) and destroyed a set in 8,000 miles haha!

I'm a quality over quantity type of person! And I'm especially happy to be rid of the bridgestones. [emoji3]

Do you have a favourite corner? Going round one corner regularly at higher than normal speed will exaggerate wear patterns

Uniroyal Rain Sport 3's top tyre for not a lot of money.

Yeah I don't do much motorway driving. Lots of A road type driving, twisty roads, roundabouts and the like. I do have quite a few favourite corners that my vrs will go round like it's on rails.

I might reflect on my driving and might get a Hunter alignment done.
