MAF too high and too much fuel...soo maf thinks way to much air is flowing nd pumps a lot of fuel in, computer then says no and logs it as a fault...

ka boom.

Don't know, but I suspect my maf needs some tlc.

can i easily clean my maf and whats the chances of this helping?

as said though the strangest thing is that after you have driven it for about 1/2 mile or so it drives perfectly smoothly like normal. its only on start up after its been left for a few days and when its cold

Some say they can be cleaned Ben, try SCN it's often talked about on there. I think it's only a temp measure though.

:(

are they expensive to replace?

I'm not much of a techie, but the symptoms you describe sound like what was wrong with my first Ocavia RS (now my mates). He said his was running like a dog until it warmed up, and then it was fine. He brought it to the dealers and they replaced the temp. sender. Car has been running great ever since.

Apologies if this is of no use to you.

interesting

This is the same as one fault i have had untill 2 weeks ago..... try cleaning the MAF first.... i had the system too rich fault... Car is running perfectly now.

Just got the same problem, car starts like a bag of pooh missing etc, hold the revs at about 2000 for 1/2 a minuite & its then stable at normal tick over & can warm up in the usual way, without seeing the car our local dealer & Jabba both think temp sensor so I will let the dealer have it next week to sort it out.

Still runs 101% when warm :) :)

Interesting...I have that sometimes....but only really if the car isn't garaged and it was very cold overnight.

Stu...what's your idle at?

Idle is at about 1000, Have just spoken to a well know & respected knowledgable techie we all know well ;) And he also concludes probably the temp sensor, The car is thinking its colder so chucking more fuel in causing the low rev missfire as its "over choked" as soon as you apply some throttle it also lets more air in which smooths it out

Once warm mine idles at 750rpm.....which I think is a little on the low side.

Does everyones also "self blip" the throttle as well?

My idle is somewhere just below 1000, I will check it exactly next time I use it, probably saturday.

Mine when it was running correctly would rev and dump a couple of times on its own when first started & then settle down

FWIW, AutoData CD2 quotes idle speed as being 760±100rpm for the VVT DBW 1.8T engines (ie AUQ, ARX and AUM) and 860±100rpm for the original cable throttle 1.8T engine (ie AGU). It also states that idle RPM is controlled by the ECU and not adjustable.

interesting, where is the temp sensor and what does it cost? :)

  • 1 year later...

I still have the same symptoms of rought idle and a wierd whooshing noise (like exhaust blowing - but it's not) on starting up for about 1min/ 2mins. I've had new temp sensor (black replaced green - on my AUQ engine) and that got rid of fault light and hemeraging fuel. Any ideas what next to try??
