Wi Fi Woes

Featured Replies

Oooh some geeky goodness there

You don't need to have a conduit, you can use armored Cat5/6 which is made to be buried outside.

Armoured Cat 5/6 is that available to the domestic retail buyer ?

With the proliferation of rats, crows, magpies (They'll destroy anything) and forgetfull gardeners,  is burying a good idea ? At least put it in some trench-backfill rubble - that's what they've done with the local cable service cables in the street - co-ax in lightweight plastic conduit placed in soft/hard-core backfill.

Of course, the other thing to avoid, if the OP decides to use powerline connectors twixt house and garage, is the creation of a ground loop, assuming the garage is separately fused and earthed. This may occur if the garage is not too far away from the house and the intervening soil is nice and wet. That would stew  the electrical connection and components.

I'm running 1 UAP AC lite, 2nd still in box.... It's in the loft room on the top, 3rd, floor on a wall. Wifi signal on phone is on -80dBm in the middle of the ground floor, so still workable and that's just one through floors and walls.

The outdoor one, @5GHz, is currently in a garage so external walls to escape/bounce off. Also reads -80dBm, odd I think. The virgin hub, in the same garage and in a tin box... is @ 5GHz and a slightly better reception, but worse performance (ping) :S I've got to run a cable to a more open space for a proper test as an outdoor AP is not much point inside. Or find a better droid scanner.

SWMBO is away so I'm wandering around trailing cables to find sweet spots, where it is, shall the install happen...

Bought the UAP-AC-Pro - claimed range up to 122m range see how it does when I install it tonight.

Edit: very easy install less than 5 minutes. Signal much stronger than previous ap so much so that in the same position the Firestick picks up the 5ghz wifi which it wouldn't previously. Not installed in finally position yet as I need to run a cable and drill some holes.

The outdoor one I mentioned, well I've found it isn't quite the range it's claimed. Clear line of sight, albeit an elevated position, maybe 80m

However a phone wifi scanner sees the signal for more distance than the 'connect to wifi' option. Thus there must be lower threshold that usable and range are measured slightly differently by. Still good enough fo most gardens, cafe, beer gardens :)

I've not found great spots for my ac lites, too many walls full stop. So best is basically atop of stair wells, effectively pointing downstairs. Sufficiently spread to cover immediate floor space and the bouncing makes it's way down and around eventually.

But yes, much stronger. The guest wifi general cloud controller stuff is quite handy, although clearly more use if you had the whole suite of products. Enjoy :)

-90db is about the lower limit for connecting, a few will manage below that, but the data through-put will be sub 1Mbps and expect a lot of CRC errors and drop-outs.

I cant remember if I mentioned it before, but the range figures they give are always for straight line with no obstructions under perfect lab conditions, everything in or near the line of sight pass, and every other RF signal will degrade that.

A couple of years ago I suffered severe RF noise on the 2.4GHz band in the area around my house, at times my router to PC connection would drop from 300Mbps to no connection, even if you positioned them within 24" of each other!!
