Intermittent fan fault

I think with it disconnected from the fan module, communications would be suspended, but TBH, the wiki page on LIN bus didn't leave me much the wiser.

I'll have a read

That hurt my head :(

From what little I understood of that it sends a signal out on one line and receives a reply on another. That's about as far as I got lol

I might download a bunch more current flow diagrams from erWin later, if so I'll be sure to include Octy2; or you could do so yourself - about 7 Euros + VAT for an hour's downloading. What year is th

14.2 Ohms is a resistance, not a voltage. Did you try measuring volts first?

Yeah but if there is a 14.2 volt message going through the cable then would I not receive a 14.2ohm resistance?

No, more likely an error message.

It's changed. Now I'm getting 0.6volt reading and continuity to positive. Possible proof that it's a random/intermittent issue?

If you re-connect the four-way now, what happens with the fans?

  • Author

They start up as the light is still on

I reckon that 12-way connector in the plenum is where I'd be heading next.  Once that's unplugged you can check the wire between there and the fans thoroughly for continuity and shorts.

I will give it a try tomorrow. Light fading here so will do it when I can see lol

:~ this car is doing my head in. :depressed:

Checked all the wiring to the fan and everything seems well, removed the Ecu and no signs of corrosion on any terminals and surprisingly all connections were clean and shiny, cleaned the eart the as well while I had all the scuttle out.

Put it back and code disappeared so got excited, drove round the block and it came on again. I'm running out of ideas now.

Well after disconnecting the Ecu, I've done about 100mile and light hasn't returned and fans haven't been back on so I'm hoping that that is the end of it and it's finally sorted itself out

Ive just acquired a 2005 1.6 FSI that has drained its battery on a couple of occasions, today I discovered that the fans suddenly kick in for no reason when the engine is off, which would explain the totally drained battery.

I guess I have to retrace your steps with my car. when you said you had cleaned the earth, Is this a component earth on the bodywork? Any pointers would be appreciated.

The car has been fighting me since I got it, each problem cured seems to provoke a new unrelated issue. even the radio has quit working on me.

yes, cleaning earths was really just scuffing the terminals up with some wet and dry so that it makes a better connection. Whatever I did seems to have cured my issue, although with so much being done I cannot confirm exactly which one it was that fixed the problem if it was one problem or a combination of a few. Have you had a full VCDS scan of the car done?

Edited by Mikek3111

No scan yet. The car has been parked up for 2 years and only came into my ownership a few weeks ago. I has had a general fault code check while the problem with the Crankshaft sensor and wiring was sorted.

First priority is to get it thru the mot. I've been driving a borrowed Renault Megane for a couple of months and I'm eager to get back into my own wheels. It was a cheap car and needs work, Im not being dramatic when I say that the interior has been destroyed by a heavy smoker who didn't do car cleaning, and so needs replacing, I come from a family of smokers but I have never seen a mess like this from smoking.... and the smell!!!!!! Full ashtrays that have been left like that for 2 years are not pleasant! I have some headlining material unused from a previous repair so I hope to use that in my Octavia, I'm going to try to clean the pillar trims but the seats are filthy and holed - as is the carpet, it also has a damaged Drivers door trim so I guess I will be scouring the Breaking/parts threads here.... But I'm wandering.

I have to weld a damaged Sill seam tomorrow (one MOT fail item) so while I have the car in the workshop I'm going to strip the earths in front of the battery box and clean it all up to see if that helps.

I will have to look into the VCDS thing after the MOT
