Warning Light On Dash - And I Can't Find My Manual...

Featured Replies

Howdy,

My wife has just come back from the shop and the yellow light that looks like an engine in the bottom left has come on. I can't find my manual and would like some advice as to what it might mean.

Cheers, Mark

Quick guess says its the Engine / Engine electronics warning light....

I'll confirm in a minute or 2

Testing Engine Electronics.

The warning light comes on when the ignition is switched on

If the warning light does not go out after starting the engine, or comes on or flashes when driving, this indicates a fault in the engine electronics system or in systems which influence exhaust emmisions. A programme stored in the engine control unit makes it possible to continue driving with certain restrictions.

It Could well be a faulty sensor mate. Got a Vag-Com by any chance?

Mark , just found that one as well , reckon it's that .

Mark - that is the light that came on for me when my coil packs went tits up on Friday - get it in ASAP.

Mark, you may also find that the car is in "Limp Mode"...

So don't be surprised if the performance is crap too.

Funnily enough this happened to my Astra a few moths before i got the Octy, it turned out to be a faulty Cam Belt sensor. But it really needs a Diagnostic check to confirm it.

Ooooh Coil Packs !!

I bet Howard's hit the nail on the head there !

Howard better not have hit any bloody nails - i was told all four were changed to the newer ones last time it was in for a failed coil pack.

Thanks for the responses chaps - it was a bit limpy yesterday and i haven't been out in it today. I started it up a few minutes ago and didn't notice any "smell of a million matches" thing going on.

Thanks again, Mark

The smell i got was of rotten eggs - i thought my son in the back seat had filled his pants at first -not pleasant at all. From reading around it seems that the 'J' model coil packs arent safe from disintegration either :-(

Mark,

I can't remember where you said you work, but if its in the 'Boro area i suggest you give Derek Slack's a bell in the morning.

If they're not too busy they'll get you in same day, they're pretty good with that sort of rush job. They did my brake light switch on 3 hours notice

Must be said though that reports of 'J' failures are much, much lower than when we all had H's.

On my way to Slack's at 1pm - I'll let you all know how I get on.

Just reading back, I noticed Geoff asking if I had Vag-Com. I do but am not too confident on using the bugger (and Jimmy's still got my lead ;)). I remember trying it out when I was going to retro fit cruise but couldn't get it to show the relavant parts of the system. Plus I crapped myself when I realised I was going to have to remove the air bag

Cheers, Mark

Mark,

does Vag-com show parts or do you mean ETKA?

Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers.

Adrian.

p.s is Skoda plicy on colipacks to replace all is you have a failed H?

Adrian,

Vag-Com connects to the OBD Port via a Laptop and shows fault codes etc. I believe you can also re-program various options with it (Auto-Lock etc)

Mark,

Hope Slack's sort it for you, i'm pretty sure they will ;)

Goddamn mother-flucking faulty lambda probe!!!! :(

Nowt wrong with the car, just a faulty oxygen sensor telling the car it's "ill". Going in on Wed/Thurs to get fixed so will have to limp around until then :(

At least it ain't terminal :)

Ooh, i said it could be a faulty sensor :)

I am just too good :D

Glad its nothing major anyway mate ;)

Adrian,

When I said "relevant parts", I meant the different modules that Vag-Com can supposedly access. I need to "talk" to the comfort module to set the Cruise Control to True and I could not get Vag-Com to show it :(

Skoda UK say DO NOT change all coil packs if one fails - but the garage said they had done all four to save me any hassle. After being told that work had been done before, I don't know whether to believe or not without lifting up and checking to see if they are J type or not.

Cheers for all your answers chaps, especially Pete for going to the trouble of ringing me , much appreciated :D

Cheers Mark,

I have VAG-COM to but only know how to look for errors and how to clear then.

Should really learn to use it properly I suppose but:

1) I'm too lazy

2) I'm scared I'll completely f**k something up.

3) I'm too lazy.

If you have H coil packs and one fails why not replace them all? Saves customer time and money coming backwards and forwards and dealer the same to book people in and replace them.

Glad your sorted.

Cheers.

Adrian.

p.s have to learn to use ETKA properly too.

Adrian,

Not sorted - they have to order the probe and book me in to fit on Weds/Thurs.

The reason Skoda don't want to replace ALL coil packs at the same time is obviously financial. If the number of failed packs is compared to the number of still OK ones, the ratio is massively in favour of the "good" ones. The number of people who have had more than one go is even fewer proportionally (not much consolation to people like me who have had two go pop).

Don't get me wrong, I think there should have been a recall but it was never going to happen when you were looking at so many that would have to be changed.

Cheers
