Is the vRS the new Primera GT

Featured Replies

An answer I gave in another thread got me thinking.

Lets take a look ;)

(ColinD may appreciate this ;) )

Primera GT based on mk2 Primera

New vRS based on mk2 Octy

Primera GT: family saloon with large load capacity (in hatchback form)

new vRS: Small(supposedly) family saloon with class leading carrying capacity

Primera GT: underated except by those who drove and appreciated them.

new vRS: Too new to say but arguably this applied to the MK1 vRS

Primera GT: Electric front windows only as standard

new vRS: Electric front windows onlt as standard

And now the clincher

Primera GT: New price £17530 when released in 1997

New vRS: New Price £17500

I think thats pretty conclusive ! :D

Uncanny :)

Being the same price 9 years later, it must be the same car!:D

Electric all round is the standard spec in Ireland.....

just thought I'd let you know... :D

£17,530 in 1997 is actually equal to about £23,500 in today's money so the price of the Primera back then must have seemed huge. In contrast the OctyII vRS looks like very good value for money.

You forgot the most important bit

Mk1 Primera GT was better than the Mk2 and it seems that may be true of the Octy vRS. It was lighter and nimbler and I have both a Mk1 Primera GT with 150k on the clock and a mk1 OctyvRS with 80k on the drive.

In 150k miles the Primera as (apart from normal service items) had a radiator and that is it!!!. Still on original clutch, exhaust, alternator, starter, etc, etc

I also know a few people who have had mk1 GT's for years and swapped it for a car they finally thought matched it on price/performance and that is the mk1 octy vRS

I traded my Primera GT for my Octy 1 vRS in 2003. I'd had the GT from new for about 5 years. It was only as powerful as my current Octy 2 2.0FSI [150 bhp] but didn't even feel that quick. The Mk 1 vRS was a rocket by comparison, and more reliable. The Primera did in its wiper system and gear lever centering spring within a few k. Having said that, I did enjoy the Prim GT and after the Rover coupes I drove before that, the build quality seemed like a Rolls. I think the Rovers were assembled by a community of blind turtles - no slur intended. [yes it is.]

Arh the GT...god I should never of sold that car.

Even now the RS does not feel as shore footed as her on the P6000's...

Mind you was a new primera this evening that nearly ended up in the barriers trying to be smart alec...

True the turbo lumps made the GT look slow, but cornering was great, very good car. Not been ear a new vRs yet, but drove a 105pd for 600 odd miles and was quite happy with how that felt...given it was 105pd, on comfort tyres the new RS should be quite a joy, perhaps not the GT of it's era though...scary facts mind.

As a happy Mk2 GT owner for 4 years and 82,000 miles I was just struck by certain similarities between the vehicles which caused me to chuckle. I think it was the rear windows which did it :D

ColinD isn't the only one :)

He owned one (ditto)

He sold it for a 4x4 Octy (ditto)

Had it remapped (ditto)

Decided a vRS would be better (err.......... :D)
