312mm brake upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi all,

just after a quick bit of guidance, as title suggests I'm after a set of 312mm front brakes. The problem is trying to find some that aren't a silly price! Any tips of where I can get some from?

Don't really want to pay the price for a fully refurbed set as they're going for 250-300 quid...

Also what options do I have to upgrade the rear brakes? what size brakes can I go for and what cars do they come off?

any help is appreciated!

thank you

I believe so

I got a set from my local scrappy for £38 for the pair. Needed a clean up but other than that worked perfectly fine.

There's a mint condition set in the for sale section

Rears you want 256mm vented from Octavia vRS, Golf/Toledo v5 or Leon Cupra/R

Don't be paying that for fronts - I got a pair from the for sale section for £100 I think, from an Octy Vrs, work perfectly. They definitely add some stopping power. However not as much as I was expecting. Unfortunately it means spacing or getting 17" wheels to go any bigger which would ruin my sleeper goal.

What pads are you using? I put brembo hp2000 in and once you get some heat in they are great

I can't remember now - but they were basically genuine replacement standard quality. Dare I ask how much a set of Brembo hp2000 pads are....?

£97 from demon tweaks or a bit less if you know someone in the trade like me ;)

However at Bedford I as giving them a lot of abuse and they never faded on me. Combined with some ATE typ200 fluid and they are great

Can you get a price for some to fit the Yeti? Like the Tarox but would be good to give the Brembos go at Brands :)

I have 6 pots but Ebc yellowstuff arent bad. Pretty shocking when cold, hot they're rather good. No fade at brands even when doing a solid 30 minute session at full pace.

So £100 just for the pads then :-o

Perhaps I will see how my budget is when they're due to be replaced. How much more is decent brake fluid? Your ATE stuff?

I think it's Worth it if you plan on driving hard for long periods of time and don't want to go down the route of getting bigger wheels to squeeze 4 pots behind.

I think the ATE is around £12 a bottle from eBay which will do the whole car just about

Yes that's very true. When I first put the brakes on with brand new pads they had the extra few mm of 'cleaning' surface for cleaning the discs on them, if that makes sense, so the braking was instant and a really quick response. However once that had worn down they returned to similar as the standard brakes in terms of pedal travel. I will get a bottle of the high quality brake fluid and maybe look at buying some of the brembo pads you speak of when mine are ready for changing. I might treat myself to some drilled discs too, although they're not very sleeper are they...

A fluid change on its own will probably help if it's not been done for a while :)

But yeah I'm really happy with mine and don't mind spending money on the only things that will stop me ploughing into a tyre wall haha

Just bought some redstuff pads and some 'Castrol React Performance' brake fluid. Hopefully it will sort / reduce the brake fade I experienced last night...

Looking at my pads (Mintex I think) they seem to of worn down massively on an angle? Anyone any clues? I'll have a better idea once the wheel and caliper is off. But looking at them in situ, one half looks twice as thick as the other!

Oh dear, that doesn't sound right at all, strip 'em down and take a good look at the threads in the carrier where the slider pins screw in, a damaged thread would allow the caliper to cant under braking as the pin would rock.

It's not just the chamfer on the pads is it?

I will take them all to bits and have a check over everything on Saturday when I take it to my mechanic. Not over fussed about the current pads wearing unevenly if that is the case as they were brand new and free when I bought the calipers, but I certainly don't want £100 pads wearing out of normal!

Fairly sure it isn't no. It looks to be actual surface itself, that makes contact with the disc.

I've heard that one plenty of times before

People thinking the pads are damaged because of it.
