Check engine light doesn't come on at all

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just bought a Fabia Estate 1.9tdi and the check engine light doesn't come on when I turn the ignition on, something I should've but didn't notice.

There are no codes stored when checked with an ELM327 with Torque.

Is it an LED or bulb in the cluster? Could it have just blown?

LEDs internal, so not just a simple bulb, strange no faults are stored though.

If your going through all the trouble of removing the clocks and damaging the bulb / covering the EML sign then it's usually to hide something.

Just see how it goes I suppose.

The car is tidy aside from that, runs fine, starts first turn of the key and isn't from anyone dodgy.

I've got some time before I can drive it anyway, so I'll see how it behaves after a good run.

Don't some of the diesels use the glow plug light instead of having a CEL?

It's more of an extra warning light, not instead of.

Don't you get an EPC light on petrols instead of the Glow plug one that's on diesels?

What does the OP mean by "check engine" light? That's not any of them listed in the manual is it?

I just assumed he means the EML

The one that looks a bit like an engine? "Control system for exhaust" as Skoda call it?

That's the one.

Sorry, yes, I mean the EML.

The car is a 2002 Estate but as far as I can gather, it should have the EML come on when the engine isn't running/it should go up out when the engine is started.

The glowplug lamp comes on briefly when turning the ignition on.

I've been considering the merits of one of China's finest VCDS cables, would that tell me something that the ELM327 may not?

Has the EGR valve been removed?

VCDS is a great tool, and a KKL cable will work on all Mk1 Fabias, so you can use VCDS lite for the price of a cable, or register it for $99 and get yet more functionality.

It's probably been taped over so it could pass an MOT, VCDS will pick up the problem, generic code readers don't always pick everything up.

Not that I'm aware of. A previous owner did bless it with Golf wheels though, s it's possible. Is there any easy way to tell if it has been removed?

No MOT here though (Isle of Man), so I'm not sure it's that...

Well there are some Fabia diesel start-ups on youtube and they have no EML light (the light in the shape of an engine) either.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

I've been sold a duff car before which had actually had the bulb removed, hence my concernw when I didn't see it, but a lot of the youtube ones don't have it either. Cheers :D

No probs.

Every day is a schoolday. Nice one Lee.

My 1.4 MPI doesn't light up EML when ignition is switched on .. and I do have a few logged engine faults. All the leds, including the ABS and the screen washer fluid warning are on when I disconnect the battery and I switch on the ignition for the first time. You can try doing this, but your clock will reset, as well as the comfort windows and the radio settings.

If your still thinking about a kkl cable I bought this exact one

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B001C1MNTM/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And used it the other day to clear airbag after steering wheel change and do one click unlock

Had no problems just set up the com port properly there is a recent thread somewhere and if you have only got windows 8 it will work just let the laptop find the drivers
