Diesel VRS?

Featured Replies

It's not been confirmed as yet,but YES it's expected to use the 170bhp 2.0Litre PDTDi engine.

Suspect it will be a while tho -- will be needed in the new Passat and golf before Skoda get to play!

The rumour is September 2006.

The rumour is September 2006.

That would make sense - would be introduced as part of 2007 model year changes.

The factory model year runs from Sept-July -- the changes required to the production / parts ordering are done during the August shutdown.

Apparently but no word on when as of yet - will be interesting to see if it actually arrives this year though

how many posts was that since I did the new post search

The reviews of the 170bhp version of the PDTDi haven't been great. You lose over 10% in fuel economy over the 140bhp version and it's even more peaky so difficult to get the best out of. The 'in gear' acceleration difference between the two is described as 'negligible' too. There is a remap now available for the 140bhp version which will take it to 185bhp and almost 400Nm of torque with a much more usable torque curve. I know the vRS brakes may be upgraded etc but it's still worth thinking about.

yeh but IF they were to marry the 170 PD with the DSG box i('tho that looks unlikely at the mo') it would surely help smooth out the torque curve as it does with the 140 .......I want one!!!

And dont forget....

170 bhp standard Octavia 2.0 TDi...Full warranty

185 bhp remapped Octavia 2.0 TDi...No warranty

Swedish Skoda has confirm that a TDI RS will be on the market after the summer.

VW will stop building pumpe-d

I have just been for a look at Slaters and have looked at their Vrs, salesmen asked if I wanted the petrol or diesel, I said but its not due until September, he replied "no before then" hinting at much sooner!

I then asked are these the 18" alloys while looking at the 18 on the tyre "no" the reply, "19's". "really!" I replied.

Guess September sounds right then!!

Also what would the 170bhp remap to? (if you dont mind no warranty)

Good point. But is the DSG good enough for 400Nm of torque?

Well the 170 PD is allready to go in the Passat, it is a PD and it is 170 bhp, this is whats going in the vRS.

Ok fair enough you got me. I was clutching at straws there anyway. In that case the PD170 and DSG sound like they may make a good combination.

Pipe dream for me though. That car if is ever launched it's sure to easily cost the wrong side of 20k once you add on all the basic stuff that strangely doesn't come as standard with the vRS.

At that money the whole Skoda value for money thing losses its edge and I have better things to spend over 20k on TBH.

They've put the DSG in the new Golf R32 so it must be able to handle some decent power - Hopefully!!

Interestingly VW also state that with the DSG the R32 is quicker to 60mph (0.3s) more economical and lower emissions!

I drove a diesel octy 2 with the DSG and loved it, if they marry it to the (hopefully) fourthcoming diesel VRS It could well tempt me to buy another Skoda! otherwise I wont be bothering.

I didn't consider the power being a real issue (within limits obviously). It's the torque can be more of an issue for manufacturers when they design gearboxes as far as I know.

The R32 only has as much torque as the 140 bhp 2.0 TDi engine so it isn't a worry.

The DSG certainly allows quicker changes and potentially better 0-60 times but i'm puzzled as to why the emissions and economy are better. After all it weighs an extra 40kg and every other car they put it in suffers slightly on economy, emissions and in some cases insurance too.

You forget they use the DSG (or a variant) in the 1000BHP Veyron! So power is not a real problem, I was speaking to my local dealer when we picked up the other halves Octy PD140 DSG Est (too many 3 letter acronyms!) and he said the diesel Octy RS would be out when my Fabia is due for the swap (October time). And I will drag it out until the DSG becomes an option as it's amazing! My next Skoda WILL have the DSG or I'll find a VAG that does ;)

Yeah I wondered about that too, it is their in black and white on VW's website though. If you click on the big R32 ad then go into the car configurator, when you get to the gearbox section it states that.

Perhaps it suits higher torque engines such as the petrol V6 or higher powered diesels better than engines with lower torque?

The DSG box used by Audi, VW, Skoda and Seat in theire cars is rated for 350 NM max. The 2.0 TDI (140 bhp) goes up to 320 NM, while the 170 bhp version goes up to 350 NM. Speaking to AMD and Jabba it's safe to asume that the DSG boxes have a 5-10% safety margin on them. Otherwise VW would never make the 170 bhp version go up the very max. Amd has remaped cars with dsg boxes up to around 370-380 NM with no problems. Really long term effects are to be seen though. BTW the DSG box used in the Veyron is a totally different beast.

:D I thought you had found a Skoda salesperson who knew something about Skoda cars for a minute:D

Can't see the point of diesel Octavia vRS.Fabia has nicked that party trick and 140 bhp is plenty in the octavia already.170 won't set the world on fire. Will it?

Glad someone else has had fun with slaters!

Fancy buying a blue vrs as a demo and not getting the dual climate/rear elec windows pack! Was gonna buy it ex demo until i saw it had no toys!

Went to Mitchells in Ellesmere Port, sooo much better.

Still they are all deaf when you mention discounts, eh?

Nearly as good as the ford dealer that just INSISTED that the new octavia was based on the passat, wasn't sporty, and the engine was over-tuned, compared to their 2.5 volvo effort, in the focus ST.

And the remapped one will be a pain to insure.

How does Chris Knott react to remapped cars? Anyone got experience?

?

In a way the salesman was kind of right, the new Octavia is based on the Passat, well the new Passat anyway, as that is now based on the golf chassis too.

Is the ST's Volvo engine basically the same that powered the T5 models for the last 10 years anyway?
