Auto hold

Can someone please settle a argument with a "know it all at work". They say there car has auto hold. I had a rear brake problem that made my car not role back on hills and I belive this is happening to there's. I fitted auto hold on my b6 passat and had to fit switch and change sittings in vcds. There car has no switch, it just holds on hills. I think it is just drum brake problem but stand to be corrected.

Uphill start assist system

The uphill start assist makes it easier to start off on steep hills. The system holds

the brake pressure produced by the activation of the brake pedal for approx.

2 seconds after the brake pedal is released. The driver can therefore move his

foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and start off on the slope,

without having to actuate the handbrake. The brake pressure drops gradually the

more you operate the accelerator pedal. If the vehicle does not start off within 2

seconds, it starts to roll back.

The uphill start assist is active as of a 5 % slope, if the driver door is closed. It is

always active on slopes when in forward or reverse start off. When driving downhill, it is inactive.

that is from the September 2013 manual

trick is if you know it will hold then use just enough pressure on the brake to stop it rolling back then it will pull off smoothly without jerking as it releases the pressure

It's not autohold, that's a completely different system.

It's simply Hill Start Assist which as has been said, requires you to hold the car yourself using the footbrake, and allows you to transition into moving away without the need for the handbrake.

Autohold 'holds' the brake for you so you don't need your foot on any pedal until you're ready to move off.

It's a very common mix up.

ETA: Also, the hill start assist won't operate if you've used the handbrake. It only works if you've used the footbrake.

That's the confusion. My auto hold on passat works for about 4 minutes and works on brake pressure when you stop. If the skoda hill assist only works for 2 seconds that might be why I'm missing it. I'm also old school and always use handbrake when stopped. I'll try it today on hill near work.

I tried it today on hill and think its there but goes of so quick its almost a waste of time. Nothing like auto hold system on vw's. I could not get it to work when pulling away from start but if i stopped on hill it did stop me for about a second. Think ill stick with hand brake

The duration of the "hold" can be adjusted via VCDS. The factory setting is two seconds. The rear drum brakes would need to be properly adjusted for it to work effectively and I will admit that it seems to function a little more smoothly on cars equipped with rear disk brakes.

Both of our cars have hill hold assist and I think it is a very useful feature, the handbrake is now only used when leaving the car after parking up. I have been driving for over thirty years and whilst I am well versed in the use of the handbrake I don't think that I would buy another car that didn't have HHA. My son has recently passed his driving test and wishes that his driving instructor had a Citigo with HHA. :)

I think it holds with front brakes.

For sure you can press pedal as much as you want. It will release the brakes when ever you release the clutch pedal.

I've only been driving for just under 1.5 years, and have only had my car for 10 weeks, but I've only used the hill start assist on my car a handful of times. I drove my parent's Yeti from passing my test to picking up my car and that doesn't have anything like HHA, so I've always used the handbrake meaning it's now a habit I shall try not to get rid of!
