Wtf Water Temp Warning Light?!?

Featured Replies

Hi all have the car less than a week so im not sure if this is a regular thing, sitting in traffic this morning i hear a bong bong bong, look down at the dash and a red water temp symbol is flashing and the gauge is up at 130oc!!! So i look at the bonnet for steam, none, i lash the heater up to 4 and full hot to try and take away the heat (used to work on an oul mazda 323 years ago). This seems to work and I finish the journey into work, check the coolant level, its fine?

can anyone shed some light on this, does the skud not like traffic? or is a known fault, any help appreciated...

thanks

Fergal

03 octavia vRS

Faulty temperature sensor or fan I would guess. Leave it sitting at idle for a while after a run, open the bonnet and check if the fans (there are two I believe) are running.

Faulty temperature sensors seems to be a common thing.

Previous discussions would indicate that the temperature gauge needle on most Octavias sits rock steady in the central position when the car is up to normal running temperature.

yeah its been rock staedy at 90 since i got the car, just this am, stiing in traffic, quick 2-3sec blast in 2nd (saw a gap ;) ) and then sitting again in traffic heard the bongs at it was heading for 130, turned up the heater and drove gently on leaving a gap from the car in front for airflow and she settled back to 90, then idled at work for a min with heater off to see if it headed back up... didnt seem to so just checked coolant levels, will give dealer a buzz later and test the fans at idle too... heres hoping it was just glitch:rolleyes:

Cheers

its important to check that both fans are running as one is not sufficent when having blasts.

will do ;)

tested the fans by turning on the aircon, both fans working fine, i guess that just leaves the sensor? will give the dealer a buzz later to check

cheers

my 2 cents worth...........could it be a leaky water pump ?? flange connecting to engine body causing inadeqaute water feed to the block / manifold .........but then again.......yr car's almost bnew right ??

yeah its an 03 with 10K on the clock, well traffic was worse on the way home last night and the needle didnt budge off 90?! rock steady the whole trip :).... then this am on the way in traffic bad enuff rock steady the whole way but then it started to rise about 2mm over 90 which is when i gave it a blast of hot air. It then settled back to 90 for the last 4-5mins of the journey to work  coolant levels and both fans working with aircon on... still havent rang the dealer

Cheers

From what you've said it

Hiya Fergal, Congrats on the new car. May you wear it well. Bring it back to the dealer with that problem, that shouldn't happen. You should be enjoying your new car not worrying every day if it is going to overheat etc. Regards David

Best of luck with the car Fergal. Bring it back and get the problem looked at. When I had it I didn't notice any temp problems with it, but it only had around 3000 miles on it then.

Dave/Fergal,

We should all meet up some time !

All sorted lads, agreed I was a bit aprehensive watchin the temps, but i was talking to Daryl at TMC and he pointed me towards a connector at the bottom of the rad passenger side, and it was off, so now reattached and everthing is fine...

temps only went high once for about 10secs before dropping, high priase for the cooling system id say if it wasnt working correctly and it still managed to control temps

yeah we'll have to sort a meet, but wait for the weather to clear up, its fookin miseralbe at the mo lol:D

Cheers

ps: Dave I see your over on www.vage.ie , Gaff have you checked it out, its an Irish based VAG forum, everything from Audi to Skoda

I was on VAGE.ie before but it wasn't working and haven't been back since.

You maybe interested to hear that Martin Tracey does REVO mapping, so I was told anyhow. I don't know what its like, you'll probably have to look at the reviews posted here.

He does Gaff,I went to the rallysprint in Punchestown last weekend and Westward had a stand there. McNamara's had a Superchips stand there as well, but when I told the chap there what my car was he started showing me plots for the diesel Octavia (no offence oilburners). Regards David

I agree, Briskoda much more user friendly. David

IMHO steer clear of the superchips, ive never really been convinced of their methods, on some turbo cars what they do amounts to removing the fuel cut and adding a bleed valve!!! not very hi-tech

As for REVO have a look at the other thread in performance I think, im a bit wary of the replacement map after the trail from opinion here...

I like the idea of personal remap from jabba tuned to each car, even the factory map doesnt suit all cars

I reckon the first Irish meet should take place at jabbasport lol ;):D

Cheers

Ye are joking aren't ye. I can't even drive down to the shops and herself thinks I'm buying something for the car.David

Re: Superchips. It's good when they get it right :D

I was going to go to Punchestown but had to work on the house, was it any good, I heard it was crap.

Dave, were you in Blanchardstown shopping centre on Monday afternoon. I seen a Black 03 RS but couldn't see the numbers.

It was crap Gaff, but a mate of mine was racing his Integrale so I had to go. Blew her up on the Sunday. It wasn't me in Blanch. David

BTW Gaff,I flashed a red Octy (have to be specific) vRS in Walkinstown yesterday because I thought it was either yourself or Fergal. It was 03 D on closer inspection and I got that confused look from the other driver. David
